Re: Help on programing a DM game
Using Unity you're going to meet a few tough problems, one of which being the items/monsters on other levels as objects/instances or as just data. If you want the game to be a single level (eg: where you can look down a pit and see where it goes) you'll have to "cheat" because no engine an...

Re: Legend of Grimrock
My point about what I called "compatibility tiles" was definitely not about closing doors on monsters or anything related to gameplay, but had more to do with fidelity. I mean, I was surprised the first time I ran RTC to see squads of 4 mummies split in two groups, it's not a bad feature a...

Re: Legend of Grimrock
A question to Almost Human (or PetriH or whoever has an answer :P): do you have plans to introduce "compatibility tiles" such as a DM-style door tile or an illusionary wall tile, so modders can eventually port their RTC/CSBWin creations to LoG? Also, does time freeze between levels? I have...

Re: Legend of Grimrock
I just completed the game - but I'm far from having cleared it. It seems like I skipped a whole level (8 I think) and struggled a lot with respawns and repops in 9 and 10. It looked like my party was far less effective than I hoped it would be, so my only strategy was pretty much to rush in, kill so...

Re: Legend of Grimrock
a) is a balance issue that is plaguing the three-man parties and trivializing undermanned content, and exactly my point. b) is very anecdotic because it lasts only a couple seconds before the "weak" monster gets in proper position blocking your own shots, and the principle can be replicate...

Re: Legend of Grimrock
The "easy fix" for this inconsistency is to never allow a single monster to be on the sides of a tile, always in the middle. Likewise, never allow a missile to go past the party even if everyone is on the other side. It was a balance issue anyway, as it made odd party sizes much harder tha...

Come on Cowsmanaut, DM Nexus, however you put it, is not what I call a fun game nor a success. You could have mentioned Ultima Underworld, the Elder Scrolls series, the Might & Magic series after 6, Dragon Age, heck, even Minecraft... just not DM nexus. The gameplay is slow as hell, terribly bor...

Re: Legend of Grimrock
I would create one item that is some sort of "chest of arrows" that drops when the monster was hit with various missiles. Pick it up and all characters get all their ammo back at once and they go automatically in the spot they were before being fired. That way you keep the relative homogen...

@PetriH
It really looks great, I'm impressed. Keep going!
One small thing:
Did you try alternative points of view? I feel the "move to the tile then look down" routine to pick up stuff from the floor is going to be very tiring after a while.

re: step based movement (@Cowsmanaut, two people faster than me due to internet shutoff :P) You are wrong about the progress of technology. You can't make a game of the dimension of DM without a tile based engine. It's pretty much the only good way to solve the exponential issues that rise as soon a...

About the speed of light - it's believed (well, part of almost all recent theories) that wherever you are, the relative speed of light is a constant and it's always the same value. Go underwater, and the light will travel at C speed. Go above water, and the light will travel at C speed. Travel at th...

Re: DMJ for Android?
Dmjava was designed to work, not designed to evolve. If you want to develop DM for Android, you can safely trash 99% of the dmjava codebase, keep 1% around for inspiration. So yeah, pretty much re-write from scratch I'm afraid.

But yeah, the whole dying of thirst/starvation is not fun. It used to happen to me in CSB back in the day all the time, before I was brave enough to go head-to-head with dragons. The game forced you to go hunt for food and water. It's one of those "emergent quests" in CSB that I do first ...

Rasmus, you know what sucks? Learning after being done with something that you could have done it in a very different way and that you actually have to do it all over again in that very different way, simply because of a plain fact you couldn't possibly know/understand at the start of your project b...

The editor looks quite nice, do you use a specific library for the GUI components or did you code everything in openGL/Direct3d? The combo boxes, listboxes and sliders, that is?

Google Sketchup is incredible for architecture, furniture and stuff like that. I had been struggling with blender before (more like yelling at my computer) but after just a couple strokes and a few 5minutes tutorials I'm convinced that this is where it's at (for low-cost anyway): model the scene wit...

Eh, I didn't link to the library itself for a reason ;) No need to incorporate any third party code, just get some inspiration from the way they dealt with their own problems to help you deal with your own! I haven't watched their implementation that closely but I'm not 100% sure they even use a ser...

Re: Creating a DM multiplayergame with TCP or UDP?
The thing is, you really really don't need it to be real-time. The most successful fighting game protocol at the moment, GGPO, actually adds lag in order to create a better illusion of real-time.

If you want to do some easy gaming/moving stuff around and composing scenes, really I suggest you check out Unity3d - it's free, powerful and it's compatible with pretty much every standard format for models. When I was working on a remake of DM for Unity I did try Blender but hated the UI (that was...
