Re: New experiences with an old game...DM

Going back a bit, one comment I want to make on skipping level 5 "Treasure Stores", I don't skip levels or fail to explore them fully for one simple reason: Experience. I find grinding boring, but taking the time to explore everywhere tends to give you enough experience to handle everythin...

Re: New experiences with an old game...DM

ZO VEN can make a poison bomb. It's FUL Bombs that cannot be made. Although I had a friend who insisted he did it once on accident, then never could figure out how he did it again. He was sure it was something like FUL GOR, but I tried every rune as a kid. Oh, and BTW, you CAN throw an entire chest ...

Re: New experiences with an old game...DM

Here's my take on the interesting treasure on level 5. If you are using weaker (in terms of carrying capacity) champions, level 5 has some of the rare medium weight armor. Not the best (mithril), but decent that if I'm taking people like Chaini, Tiggy, Wu Tse, Gando, Boris, Wuuf, etc, I'd consider u...

Re: Important Items to Keep With You Instead of Discarding.

Using "jab" with the rapier is about the same as using punch only it levels fighter levels. It is pretty good for training, but I don't usually bother grinding fighter levels. With the way I play it's not necessary, I'm always playing catch-up with ninja levels, especially later when I ten...

Also the 2nd edition hint book's solution to the pit maze has an error in it. I have a hand-written correction in mine. As for hand-made notes, I still occasionally do that for games as well since it is often easier than accessing them in-game, Especially if you have to make a choice and the game wo...

Re: New experiences with an old game...DM

One thing happened, this time around, that was very pleasant for me. The 'stores' section on the floor below the screamer room has a room that has multiple transportation spots. This has always been the most difficult puzzle for me, over the years, when trying to remember it with no 'helps' involve...

Re: where did Lord Chaos get his Skeletons from?

Funny thing was, there aren't a whole lot of deadly traps in Dungeon Master, and nothing that you can't get out of. Nothing that will leave you trapped in a pit or imprisoned in a wall forever. One of the deadliest traps is probably at the start of the worm level, where that door closes automaticall...

Re: where did Lord Chaos get his Skeletons from?

The part about being greedy with treasure doesn't make much sense, considering that I tend to be just as greedy. Or is it meant to imply that they were overloaded with stuff instead of tossing things as soon as a better weapon or piece of armor becomes available? Granted, half the coins and gems you...

Re: where did Lord Chaos get his Skeletons from?

I would have thought that "Time is of the Essence" three levels above would have prepared you for that puzzle, if it is the one I remember. I need to do a full run through again, but I'm playing the Might & Magic series right now. Previously I had only played the first two on the Apple...

(Leslie) Now I'm racking my brain, trying to remember where that crossbow is located, so I can find the place of that regenerating wasp. Hmmm. Could that be the room with the metal gate that keeps closing while you try to enter the room? The level just before the RA gates? With the button on the fa...

Re: where did Lord Chaos get his Skeletons from?

Also the next page says that only some of the monsters used to be champions. Plus, we know that the screamers and pain rats regenerate, so they come from something else. Presumably the pain rats are just enlarged regular rats while screamers might be transformed/mutated mushrooms. I would assume the...

Re: Say hello to some familiar friends

The art was changed slightly in 2nd edition enough that I thought some DM monsters were based on some from AD&D, but changed to avoid copyright. Those first edition renditions look like DM pulled them right out of the MM. Although I have to check my book as I don't recall the shrieker or boggle ...

The dexhelm you mentioned earlier doesn't exit either, and the powertowers can only be obtained from level 6 "Tomb of the Firestaff" when you have to pick one door with treasure and forgo all the others ala Monty Hall in "Let's Make a Deal" (This game came out when that show was ...

I may have to experiment with the version on my old computer, because while I did experiment a bit 30 years ago with the stat boosting potions on the IIGS version, I don't think I tired more than a single MON level potion, and did not notice much difference. From what you are saying it takes multipl...

Re: Important Items to Keep With You Instead of Discarding.

I only use stat potions for the "test of strength", and as I favor stronger champions I rarely need it. Even then I mostly just stick to the one found in the dungeon rather than making it myself. Often the others (DAIN, ROS, NETA) I find just sit in my inventory until I find a water founta...

Re: Differences Between SNES Version of Dungeon Master and More Standard Versions of the Game.

Those screamers in the screamer room can be tougher than you expect. They take a pounding. It's just that their attacks are so pathetic that you don't mind. I think they are actually harder to kill than the worms, but the worms prove that the best defense is a good offense.

Re: Differences Between SNES Version of Dungeon Master and More Standard Versions of the Game.

I'm pretty sure that the gigglers on the level "Des, The Void" can be killed with ON level fireballs and poison bolts. No need to waste the mana on MON level ones. I think the ones deeper might need EE or even PAL level. I'm pretty sure UM level ones can reliably (but not 100% of the time)...

On the subject of the Compass, I agree, it's useful to help you navigate. I was only saying that you don't HAVE to keep it, just that it comes in handy. On the subject of "Test your strength", with the use of KU potions, you don't absolutely need the bow. You can throw some stars or a rock...

Re: Important Items to Keep With You Instead of Discarding.

Those rocks are heavy, I eventually discard it to free up weight once I have enough other ranged weapons. The sling and 5 rocks weighs more than 5lbs, while most other missiles only weigh 0.2lbs, or 1lb total + launcher for the bow. It's good, about as good as the bow in the same way that the rapier...

Re: Differences Between SNES Version of Dungeon Master and More Standard Versions of the Game.

Gigglers are technically nowhere near as hard to hit as giant wasps in the normal game, but they are slightly more difficult than your average monster. Probably on par with couatls. The real issue is that they don't stick around to get hit, but instead run away, making them much harder to hit in mel...

As for dropping off items, most people leave them by the stairs or the shortcut (if they metagame and know where it is). See http://dmweb.free.fr/?q=node/259 It would be nice if instead of having to do calculations, that chart would show overall damage, average damage, and damage over time so you could more easily read the chart and answer questions like this. For instance, against regular monsters the Rapier with st...

Sounds like they have definitely been nerfed then. Those wasps are annoying and really hard to land a decent blow on. Most attacks just do superficial damage to the point where using the rapier to jab them is often more effective than almost anything else. Yet they die almost instantly to LO OH VEN ...
