Re: The List: Best RPG

I *am* being a little pedantic ;-) I think we mostly understand RPG to mean a game where there is some sort of character progression and where you have some kind of input into how the character grows. The question of what is a RPG was discussed ion so many places, but so far no one really made a go...

Re: Charging money to play custom dungeons?

I'm slightly curious how this will turn out. My bet would be that it turns out to be close to impossible to make money with selling custom dungeons. Even while putting aside the morale problems of sharing the income with the programmers of the editor/runtime, and the question how to create all the n...

Re: How was CSBWin created?

Some systems could switch "memory banks". Like the upper 16k of the total 64k, you could tell the hardware which addresses of your ram should be visible there and then access it. Or something. Some systems also did address multiplexing. First here were the low 16 bit of the address put on ...

I'd assume that the multiplayer variants of some of the roguelike projects would be a good starting point. At least what belongs the handling of players in a cell based world.

Re: Advancing technology vs the eternal Nostalgic

My brother works in IT and knows a bunch of people who make video games for a living. He says the dvelopers are usually creative, innovtive types who love to come up with new ideas. But then the publisher (the one with the pocketbook) comes in, all suited with a graph-chart and says "According...

Re: Charging money to play custom dungeons?

I think many artists and developers are already happy if people actually notice their work. In these days of everybody, including extremely skilled people, being on the internet and creating things, mostly for free, it is hard enough to have ones work recognized in between all the other works. Also,...

Re: A bargain..

I wonder what sense it makes trying to sell such stuff, because everyone surely needs unique stuff. In other game development forums I see that people actually buy such models, modify them a bit and use them in their games. But those are usually people who want to sell their games, and have a budge...

Thanks :) I think I'll try to move from game development to tool development. I want to stay in the field of RPG projects, though. I have a few things in work, but I don't know how useful those are. At the moment I think they are more toys than tools. I'll post pointers when I think I have something...

Re: INN OF LOST SOULS: general chit-chat thread

Dreaming about games seems to be quite normal. Our brain seems to sort and re-link experiences and memories during sleep, and sometimes parts of this process become conscious. During the re-linking process there are apparently a lot of strangely connected fragments being worked on, most likely expla...

There passed some time now, and I tried to make up my mind, what to do with this project. I had to realize I'm not a game designer. in MMOs there are often people who play "supporter", like a healer who is not really able to fight, but stands back, need even to be protected, but heals the front row fighters. So I think people can enjoy playing this.

Re: Do you ever map by hand?

I had full hand drawn maps of DM dungeons and CSB dungeons. Also a lot of hand drawn maps for other games. It was part of the experience. Nowadays I expect games to come with an automap. What I often miss though, is an in-game diary where I can take notes of my discoveries in the game. So I still ha...

Re: Free the dungeon

Personally, I don't like the modern 3D games at all. Higher resolution graphics in the same style of the original DM ones will be good for me. I just tried to share a few experiences of my own tries with photos, not particularly limited to DM.

Sorry for striving off topic.

Re: Free the dungeon

Photographs will need quite some amount of postprocessing, but often give nice results. At least I had good luck constructing houses for some game from photos of real houses that I took once. Tests with walls for textures have been unsatisfying though. It's quite tricky to get the light right, but I...

Re: How would I become an employed level designer?

You'll also face a hard competition over such job offers, since there are a whole lot of people trying to get into the gaming industry. You'll need to display skills, abilities or experience that makes you stand out of the crowd. I'd assume that level designer is a too narrow field, and that compani...

Re: Creating an oldschool game with new engine

As for helmets not giving armour - again, you need to decide on a design space and level of abstraction. A helmet won't stop concussion from a powerful blow. Most people won't put their heads in the way of a blow, so most blows would be to the body. Therefore, a helmet is negligabel. Plus, in the R...

Re: why DSB ?

There was a playthrough report posted for the original DM dungeon in DSB, and there were bugs found and fixed. I played a bit myself, and it seems quite alright. I'm not that much of a DM expert, but it matched my memories quite well, so I'd say playing the DM dungeon in DSB is a good experience.

Re: why DSB ?

The Lua scripts are very easy to access by mod-makers and programmers, so DSB definitely has an edge if one looks for an DM-like engine to make a game with. The benefits fro players come later, when the enhanced modability of DSB was used by people to make good games based on DSB. But such needs tim...

As the former posters already pointed out, such projects are too big for a single person. I found the former postings a bit bit discouraging to the ...

C++is fine, but when I got more tinot Java I found it suits me much better. Was a big step for me to have a persistent dungeon that I can edit, save, and later load again :) The alpha blending should be possible, the system supports that.
