Re: 'Activated items'

I suppose you could have the "active" version of the sword hidden in some inaccessible square sitting on top of an item teleporter which points at the altar, and set it to activate when the "dormant" version of the sword is placed on there (set it to destroy the "dormant" version or something at the...

Re: Hint Oracle: penalty for use?

I suppose it did have a penalty - a time-based one, as you had to do all the saving, loading, and disk-swapping that was necessary back then. Nowadays, none of that is necessary, not just because games are no longer on floppy disks but also because we have the Internet - it doesn't really matter wha...

Re: Hint Oracle: penalty for use?

Eh, you could just reload and get them back that way ;). Maybe the Hint Oracle could be a thing in the dungeon that you have to travel to, a bit like an Altar of Rebirth - just have a few of them scattered throughout the dungeon and make them a bit of an arse to get to but in a straightforward way (...

Re: Runes

Yeah, that second link you've given is indeed my (well, my dad's) copy of the hint book, complete with blue highlighter over all the levels from when my dad was trying to visit every square in the game :D. The creatures I was describing as technically being "Earth Elementals" are the Rock Monsters/R...

Re: Runes

I wonder where the "official" names for all the monsters come from...are they in the manual? I never read that as a kid, I just use the names they're given in the hint book. So for the examples above - Blue Troll, Giant Spider (even though they're clearly not that spider-like), Thief, Rock Monster, ...

Re: Runes

Ahh I wondered what article you were talking about in the Discord. As per my reply there, as far as I'm aware the DM spell runes are just symbols based on whatever the rune represents, like Dain resembling an arm holding up a staff casting a spell, Ku is a sword, Ven looks like the hourglass shape y...

Re: Hi from Dash!

Hi :). As Gambit says, this isn't the DM you're looking for. A lot of people seem to make this mistake, even though I'm sure it says it somewhere on the main page that we're not about DnD. That said, I'm one of the people who do play...though if you've only been playing for the past year or so then ...

Re: High There! ;)

Eh, age has nothing to do with interest in games - I'm in my thirties and have no interest in stopping >:). Games are not "bad for you". In fact, depending on the game, they can be quite the opposite - teamwork, hand-eye co-ordination, problem solving, maths, spelling/grammar, creativity, communitat...

Re: High There! ;)

"Take over everyone"? No. No PvP. As I have said - I don't play to "beat" other players. I do not team up with other people to "beat" other players. I may team up with one person to have fun building stuff or to defeat enemies controlled by an AI. Not every game is about kicking the crap out of othe...

Re: High There! ;)

I mean...not always? Not all games necessarily are ones that can be "won" or "lost" - tabletop RPGs, for example. You don't really "win" DnD, you just play it and have fun and maybe your character achieves some of whatever they set out to achieve (even if that's something as basic/obvious as "surviv...

Re: High There! ;)

I mean, it probably depends on what you're playing or who you're playing with...some people will just complain about other people no matter what. But there is an aspect of fun that can be had when playing with other people that you just can't get playing alone. Yes, of course, playing single player ...

Re: High There! ;)

As I say - play co-op and such things will not be an issue, because you're ganging up with your friends against an AI, which probably isn't going to start gloating if it beats you, nor care if you do such when you beat it ;). I play games where you group up with other players against AI enemies so e...

Re: High There! ;)

Yeah, a lot of games (mainly ones by the big companies) seem to put too much effort on the graphics to the detriment of everything else. Also, a lot of games have too much hand-holding these days. Just drop me in the world with some crappy starting gear after I'm done creating my character - I'll do...

Hmm, punching trees in order to get the materials to make a pickaxe and stuff...I'm guessing you are familiar with Minecraft? I think lightning works because it has a physical component to the damage, which is something that works against Knights and Stone Giants.
