Pretty off-topic, but...

Warning: I may flog a dead horse here. But I just want to stress that learning the spells on your own through experimentation is not getting spells before you were supposed to have them! Nor are we not intended to have the spells before we read them on a scroll in DM, CSB or DM2, though that is cert...

Like PitD, I find my behavior ingrained by long experience with one browser...but in my case, it's Navigator, not IE. I managed to move from Lynx to Mosaic to Navigator years ago and have been happy ever since. While I have IE installed on my systems for site testing, I find the interface annoying a...

I have actually experienced something very similar, cowsmanaut. Starting back in November, my laptop's install of Norton (sorry, I don't know which version, for reasons that will become obvious soon enough) started "quarantining" seemingly random files on the system. At first I took little...

<ahem> It seems to me that the addition of a quick-drop into the quiver, the "chested" quiver, and the spear are all fine ideas that would, to a greater or lesser extent, change the gameplay of the engine, much as the spellbook changes the gameplay. So my suggestion would be to have any at...

Do you think, then, that the party should make noise? Aside from the "YUUHH!" when you slam into walls when keyboard-navigating too fast, I mean. It wouldn't be true to the original, but it might be an interesting gameplay variation. The party could make more noise when encumbered, and sti...

Yeah, when I played the game for the very first time back in 1986 (hard to believe it was SEVENTEEN years ago!), it took me forever to find that key. In fact, I saved several hours into the game, and (not to bring in the "VI altars" thread) my party starved to death repeatedly as I looked ...

I agree wth several of the previous posters. You can always save, and save, and save (though I still use one save slot - old habits die hard), and be secure in the knowledge that you could go back and reload the game if you need to, but that using the altars is preferable and what I lean towards. Al...

I have to jump in on a couple of points, even though the discussion is a little old. First, about player knowledge vs. character knowledge: one of the big draws of Dungeon Master, for me, was experimentation with the runes to make a list of all the spells. The first few levels were fascinating times...

How specialized are you?

So I was reading through the RTC Quick Start Guide, and something mentioned there made me wonder: how specialized have players been? Specifically, have any of you ever managed to play a character in one class without ever gaining levels in another class? I post this in the Dungeon Master area, becau...

A quick anecdote about the lightning: about halfway through the game, I was returning through the hedges for some reason, and the rain started. I was sure that I'd seen this as an earlier topic, but I couldn't find it in any of the places that made sense to me. If it did exist elsewhere, I apologize for the duplication... ...you just have to make sure to remember which way to turn, based on which rank you are in (front or back)... I'm playing DM, not jsut for nostalgia, but to see how well it has been implemented. At least, that's why I started playing it...now I continue because I'm hooked, all over again. Seeker19

I have no idea how fast I play through the game. I find it a bizarre criterion, though an intriguing one, that Gilbert has set up for "scoring" the game. I look forward to finishing DM to see how I "rate". I'm sure I don't play through in four hours, though.

I have to think way, way back to remember a party I played without reincarnating everyone. I think, back then, I used Zed a lot because of his well-rounded abilities. Having a fascination with the reptilian, I tended to pick Hisssa a lot as well. After that, I used Gothmog (cool name) and Nabi a fai...

Monster sound preferences?

The biggest change in the game I've experienced so far is the way that many monsters make noise when they move. Since my experience of DM and CSB was limited solely to the ST versions (and then the DMuted version of DM on DOS many years later), I don't know if this was a feature on other platforms. ...

Cool things about DM2

Something someone posted on Dan's board about a "port" of DM got me thinking about this. It was a while ago, and I'm lazy, so I don't know who'd written it, but basically he'd said that "true 3D wouldn't be Dungeon Master" and...it's true. There are only two computer games that h...

What makes a best character

What I've thought makes a best character has changed over the years...nowadays I think it's the stamina. But in the past I've preferred vitality, mana, strength, even the character portrait! The reason I favor stamina so much is that it helps when running around the dungeon, and every other stat in ...

What was your favorite part of CSB? I simply love the idea of the game's beginning: you go through the Prison, and you have these high-powered characters to choose from. You expect to really be able to whomp some monsters right off, and walk through the dungeon, and then pow! You're in the dark and ...
