Re: Where in the world has Cows been?

Hello! I still browse through here occasionally, maybe once every few months. I rarely post anything, but then I've never really done much of that. Lately I've been learning Unity and Unreal and slowly creating a game. It's going to take me a few years though. Work and kids take up most of my time t...

Easter surprise

Easter morning, 1990. My sister and I had put out baskets the previous night for the Easter Bunny to fill with goodies. (By this point we both knew the "Easter Bunny" was really mom.) Every previous year I'd get a variety of candy in the basket. This time would be different. In addition to...

Re: Dm Java Playthrough with Video.

Thanks for making these videos, I've enjoyed watching them. I hope you're having fun. I don't think I'd have the patience to play through this dungeon now. Some of it just seems excessively difficult (e.g. getting the vorpal blade, and the demons around the zoom area). By the way, I'm surprised to s...

Re: Dungeon Master for iPad

I'd just like to add that I wasn't ever contacted about this. I don't have a problem with the source code being used as a basis for new games / platforms, but the artwork is another issue entirely. As Cowsmanaut said, much of it is not my own creation and is therefore copyright various other individ...

Re: Learning 3D?

2.49 -- some of the scripts and tools I wanted to try out only work in 2.49. Interesting about 2.5 though -- is the redesign any better? Is it more intuitive? I keep meaning to learn Blender myself, but haven't actually gotten around to it yet. It's high on my list of things to do "later"...

What version of Blender did you try? Blender 2.5 (currently in Beta) features a massive redesign of the UI.

Re: New Mac OS X port for Macintosh users!

I haven't used an Amiga emulator in a while, but Hatari is a great Atari ST emulator. You could also try Boxer for DOS, which is really just a nice wrapper around DOSBox. Of the more recent clones, only Dungeon Master Java runs on Mac without some kind of emulation.

Re: New release for Windows and Mac

Hello, does anyone have a step-by-step guide to run the new DMJ release under Linux? I haven't tried it on Linux, but you should be able to use the jar files inside the .app bundles. From the command line, go to the game directory and then execute: java -jar Dungeon\ Master\ Java.app/Contents/Resou...

CRPG Addict plays Dungeon Master

The guy doing the CRPG Addict blog has now played Dungeon Master. Some interesting comments from a first-time player, including some criticism. Some positives he mentions: graphics, leveling system, spell system, varied attacks, puzzles, creature variety, etc. Funny quote: "The closest I've com...

It works! No more second dungeon view, no more flickering, and the UI controls are always visible. Great job. Now I can actually try it out some more.

Re: Converting CSBWin graphicengine to a OpenGL 3D engine

I'm still getting the same problems: second dungeon view with crazy colors, flicker, and invisible controls. I did notice that with this build the messed up second dungeon view now scales with the correct dungeon view. It used to stay a fixed size. Here are some screenshots of what I'm seeing (minus...

Re: Converting CSBWin graphicengine to a OpenGL 3D engine

I tried this out on my laptop running Windows XP SP3 (GeForce 8600M graphics card), but I'm seeing some serious display issues. There appears to be a second dungeon view that gets drawn below/beneath the correct one, but with the wrong colors (brown becomes blue, blue becomes red, etc.). Very odd, b...

Re: Level 1 in DM Java

The hallway with blinking pits I mentioned begins in the southeast of the caverns. After the teleport is a large open room with an alcove that I think has the solid key. There are four side rooms with doors that require keys of b, each holding some goodies. The only way to leave the area is to push ...

There's a wall button that toggles the door blocking the stairs down. You can find the button after you pass the hallway with the blinking pits and step into the teleport.

Re: various observations on DMJava

Just now getting around to responding. Odds are the poster will never see this, but here goes anyway: I used to run DMJ on one of the WIN systems years ago. Overall, I found it limiting, but promising. Good eye candy, but the lack of an automap was a buzzkill. I also had a time trying to navigate er...

Thanks for Phantasie. I had forgotten them. I enjoyed them (3 i believe , was my favorite) . Tier #2 . Phantasie was a lot of fun. Here's a recent article from CRPG addict about the first one. There are a few followup articles too. Makes me want to play it again. http://crpgaddict.blogspot.com/2010...

Re: The List: Best RPG

I like the old Phantasie games I played on my Atari ST. These are even older SSI games than the gold box games. The first one is my favorite. The third one was pretty good too, but number 2 was definitely the weakest. I like the wide variety it had, from races you could choose from (trolls, minotaur...

Re: View windows size or zoom

I experimented with scaling over the weekend, and I've actually gotten something that works fairly well. It doesn't adjust automatically with the window size, but there is an easy enough slider in the options dialog. It defaults to 1x, but the slider goes up to 4x and allows fractional scale values ...

Re: View windows size or zoom

Unfortunately no, there is no scale option. There used to be a fullscreen mode, but I removed it because it was buggy with modern Java runtimes. Simply scaling the dungeon view as the window size changes should be possible though. If I get inspired to do anything more on DMJ I'll look into it.

I think you mean Rick Cook's Wizardry series. I only ever read the first one, Wizard's Bane. It was pretty good. "The Wizardry Cursed" has a jet and dragon on the cover.

Definitely try increasing the allocated memory. If that doesn't help I'm not sure what to tell you. I haven't noticed any slowdowns on my laptop running Mac or Windows. I tested using Java version 1.6.0_20, though I don't think I played more than 10 minutes on Windows. I didn't try it with Linux or ...

New release for Windows and Mac

I've made a small update to DMJ to fix compatibility issues with modern Java. Windows and Mac in the same download. No more broken Windows installer, now just download the zip file, extract it, and double-click an executable. Tested on Snow Leopard 10.6.3 and Windows XP SP3. Hopefully someone can ve...
