Re: Trying An Old One

Hi John Gregory, Welcome to the forum! Really hope your surgery goes well and you are able to experience a full recovery from your injury. The Dungeon Master Encyclopaedia maintained by ChristopheF, the Administrator of this forum, contains a great deal of documentation you can use to research vario...

Re: So, tell us about yourself...

Welcome to the forum John / rpgamer! Always nice to see another person who enjoys great vintage games like this one. When did you first play Dungeon Master and on which platform? I played the first game on the SNES as a teenager at some point during the 1990s, myself, and never actually had the wher...

Re: Back at it again

Thanks for the additional details, ChristopheF! The way the developers coded the stairwell pressure plate makes sense - they probably generally wanted to make entering the part of Floor 12 with Chaos and the Demons a "point of no return" but also wanted a way to make sure that the wall lea...

Re: Back at it again

That's really excellent information, ChristopheF - thank you for providing all of those details! During my 2020 playthrough of Dungeon Master, I noted and tried to document the main differences I observed between the SNES version of the game I was playing and the PC version of the game - while I not...

Re: Back at it again

I went ahead and fought the Dragon the first time I ventured down to the 13th Floor, but I ended up doing a lot of reloading and experimentation around that point in the game in an attempt to figure out what caused the passage back to the earlier floors in the game to become sealed in the SNES versi...

Re: Back at it again

It's actually pretty easy to quickly rush past all of the Demons to the northeast corner room (and once you're in there with the doors closed, they can't come after you) - it's a bit like sneaking past the Dragon on the 13th level of the dungeon.....

Re: Back at it again

Yeah - the way it works with the enclosed room in the northeast corner of the floor is as follows: Enter the room, shut the doors, and simply wait until Chaos teleports into the room (which he will do eventually, especially if you try sleeping). Once Chaos is in the room, lure him to a location wher...

Re: Back at it again

Great job getting through the game so quickly! I remember that I followed the advice in the Dungeon Master Encyclopaedia to trap Chaos in the corner of the tiny, enclosed, four-space room in the northeast corner of the floor - doing this enables you to trap him using only two Fluxcages instead of th...

Re: Back at it again

That's pretty funny - I never knew the exact formula before you mentioned it, but I did observe the basic phenomena you described during my 2020 playthrough of this game and mentioned it in the following post: https://www.dungeon-master.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=31342&p=160497&hilit...

Re: Back at it again

Hi Roger, This is definitely a great game - sounds like you're a significant portion of the way through your playthrough already. I've only ever played the SNES version of Dungeon Master, myself (I haven't played too many games on an actual PC other than a couple MMORPGs and several old adventure ga...

Re: Some observations from a DM returnee

Some of the notes from my experimentation in 2020 is in several posts within the following "Best Way to Level?" thread: https://www.dungeon-master.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=31321&start=30 The gist of it is that the quirk in the SNES version of the game which causes actions exe...

Re: Some observations from a DM returnee

Hey pjs, Not sure where you are getting the 48 experience point amount for a full power MA (Stamina) Potion spell or the 28 experience point amount for a full power Magic Torch spell from the "Dungeon Master and Chaos Strikes Back Spells" page of the Dungeon Master Encylopaedia you linked ...

Re: Some observations from a DM returnee

Despite the fact that it isn't my preferred method (due to inconvenience and lack of availability until very late in the dungeon), I would still guess that the Black Flame room is going to be the fastest way of training all four skills. For Fighter levels, the easiest way is probably to repeatedly J...

Re: Some observations from a DM returnee

Hi ChristopheF, I think pjs is referring to the following two sentences on the "Experience and Training" page of the Dungeon Master Encyclopaedia: 1. "If the Improved Skill associated to the action you perform is between 04 and 11 (hidden Fighter and Ninja skills) and if no creature h...

Re: Some observations from a DM returnee

Hi pjs / all, I believe I first played Dungeon Master on the SNES when I was a teenager, but I never got very far into the game until I replayed it during graduate school in the early 2000s. I didn't actually complete the game (or get any further than the floor with the Scorpions) until I finally ma...

Re: Road to full team of Archmasters (SNES)

Great job again, Diecast! I actually optimized my characters' stats each time they gained a level during my playthrough last year, so I don't think their stats were all *that* much lower than your characters' stats overall (with the main exception being their mana, which I recall tended to be just o...

Diecast: Wow - great job! That was a really long project, and I'm pretty sure you're one of only a few players who have managed to get to Archmaster level for all four of their characters. slickrcbd: Diecast said at the bottom of his post that he would make another post with his characters' stats at...

Re: Road to full team of Archmasters (SNES)

There are a couple of older posts from people claiming that they have trained all of their characters' skills to Archmaster level (at least one of which I believe has screenshots proving it). Among players of this game, though, I would say only a very small percentage would ever attempt going for Ar...

Re: Excitement at finding old DM handbook

I just looked up the Atari ST - I did not realize until now that Atari ever manufactured a line of ordinary personal computers. My main exposure to Atari was through the Atari 2600 video game system I had when growing up, so I kind of assumed that the Atari ST was mainly some sort of gaming system.....

Re: Anyone else stack there stuff in a specific area?

I had various stacks of food and unique items in several places in the general area of Floor 3 near the stairwell leading down to Floor 4 (not far beyond where the Screamer Room is located, but far enough away so that there would not be any chance of the large quantity of items causing the game to s...
