Good ideas.

I've been thinking along the same lines for my clone. You've thought of some that I hadn't so I might have to steal them. Ideas like this really need to be play-tested to see how useful they are. It might seem like a great idea but be horrible in practice. I guess I'll know in about a year... http:/...

With the mesh part I say, unless you truly want to make some detailed meshes, just keep it simple. Besides it being comp. friendly and easy to use, it's not worth paying $4,000 just for a hobby. This is no hobby. The rest of my life is just the stuff I have to do so I can afford to do this. I've wa...

I find nothing more motivating than seeing the results of my work on the screen. It makes the long hours of pulling my own hair out worth it. :D

Latest update (YADC)

I just updated my Dev Diary with the latest progress on my clone.

http://www.redmooninc.com/dungeon/

Progress is slow but steady.

<Edit>
Added another screen shot of some new meshes. Until I can afford the $4,000 for 3D Studio, the meshes will have to remain simple.

Explanation

"Well paced with smooth learning curve" : can you explain more precisely ? with simple words for poor english talking person I've always thought the pace and learning curve of DM were the best of any game I've played. It took you by the hand at the begining and introduced you to each new ...

Not another Dungeon Clone

My program has gone through a metamorphosis. Well, more like a slash-and-burn. Check out the latest. http://www.icapitalist.net/dungeon/default.html Please note, only click on the images if you are patient as they are rather large (simple screen capture at 1152x864) As you can see, it's not going to...

Some good points there, cows. I and my wife have never both worked at the same time. Whe one of us gets a job, the other quits (she used to be a doctor, I used to be dilbert). Now she's a soon-to-be-ex-waitress writing a book and I'm a contractor working a few hours a day from my home office in betw...

Re: linflas post on collaboration. No, at least not yet. I don't expect the first version of my game to be the one I really want. I'm just trying to get a base-line to work with. Then I can post it here and get lots of feedback. That way, instead of trying to decide if option A is better or worse th...

Yes, I'm coming to that conclusion. I think that as long as the level designers (well, me) keep playability as the top goal and don't go down the "let's put this in to look cool" or "this is more realistic..." roads, everything should be ok.

I didn't have a vote because I want to see people's reasoning rather than just the conclusion. That way I'll be able to get to answer the following: Is 2D better than 3D because that's the only way to do it (games as fun as DM) or is it just a consequence of 3D shifting the focus of development for ...

Thanks for your input, people. I'll address them one at a time: PicturesInTheDark I didn't mean that the problem is the sentences spoken by the generic NPCs but that they do not advance the story/current quest in any way. No matter how clever one gets with the 'generate dialog' code, they are still ...

2D vs 3D

I’ve been working on my DM clone for about 14 months now. I am writing it in C++ using DirectX 9.0. Last week I discovered Game Studio and was able to produce the same level of functionality in 3 days. So, I thought, “should I switch to Game Studio and throw my engine away?” 14 months vs. 3 days see...

I'm 32. Been playing DM since it came out for the ST. The day I got it I turned it on and was still at it 2 days later. No sleep. I was also supposed to be at work. On the third day (still no sleep) I went to work but I was sent home because I looked so bad. As soon as I got home I played it again. ...

After reading this I immediately went out and bought a flash drive so I can have off-site backups. I think I'd go insane if I lost 18 months of work. Maybe that's why we've not heard anything else from Mystic Unicorn.

Just to add me 2 cents. I didn't like DM2 because it only took me 8 hours to complete and I had NO desire to do it again. It was just too simple after the slug-fest of DM1. It had a console feel to it. Just not serious enough. When I got to the end and exited the plane with the bad guy, I thought th...

YADC (yet another dungeon clone)

I'm writing a 3D clone. Been at it for quite a while now. It's 3D using DirectX 9.0. It's in the early stages now but it's coming along nicely. I've got a development diary if anyone wants to see it progress. Also, as I get further along I'll need help with graphics and meshes. I'm crap at these, as...
