In my opinion aesthetically speaking, games never improved visually beyond the 16-bit days. I like pixels, I like seeing how graphics are made up. It's one of the things that defines videogames for me, one of the things that makes it a unique form of art or entertainment. The more games move towards...

hehe, don't worry - it's only 13x11 inches.

Much as I love the guy, even I couldn't bear a six-foot square Mophus grinning at me

Have you seen The Devil's Backbone? It's more a wartime drama / ghost story mashup, but it's an exceptional film - also by Del Toro.

Pan's Labyrinth is indeed an amazing piece of work. It's not as heavily fantastical as the trailers would lead you to believe but that's not a bad thing at all. It does what The Devil's backbone did in mixing the truly fantastic with a very real period of social/political events. Films I've finally ...

Mine's from an old computer game character from the Ultimate Play The Game stable, starring in such games as Sabre Wulf, Knight Lore and Underwurlde... basically some of the first computer games I played on the dear old Speccy. I used it as a name the first time I connected to the net with my Dreamc...

But strangely cant find it on the net. Must have had a similar sounding name, and it was aaages ago. :( http://www.far...

This looks great, and completely unexpected. Aside from DM and World of Warcraft my other gaming obsession is Roguelikes, so I'm immediately drawn to any kind of top-down RPG.

|Really looking forward to seeing this develop :D

I thought the film was great, and I'm a big fan of the original comic. Some things need to change in transition to another medium (plot and pacing to name a couple), and some things have to change to remain relevant.

The best I can turn up is 'late 1987', according to the (rather excellent) feature in Retro gamer magazine. That was the ST version. Apparently the game made its first public appearance at the Las Vegas CES in June 1986, running a simple slideshow of screens. Even that was enough to convince a Mirro...

Was good. Not much time off work thanks to working in retail and I did manage to come down with a cold bang on Christmas Eve, but I'm happy. I've been assimilating people into my revitalized tabletop gaming passion.

A very well-considered list and a good read. I pretty much agree with the whole thing. I'd try to find spots for Phantasy Star Online (multiplayer online gaming on a console, laying the foundations for things like Xbox Live), and Super Mario 64 (a true reinvention/evolution of a genre, and one endle...

I'm doing pretty well overall, thanks! I pretty much coasted along as usual in 2006, but I did refocus some of my interests. I've all but abandoned the majority of videogaming in favour of settling down with a few select titles, and I've filled the leisure time gap with a revitalised passion for old...

I've just started into Gene Wolfe's The Book of the New Sun saga, which is quite intriguing from the off. It has that particular mix of the recognizable and completely alien that I enjoy in fantasy (as the story progresses and the world starts to make sense and take shape in the mind those alien ele...

Very impressive!

Excellent atmosphere, and it goes without saying that it looks a treat. Clearly a lot of work has gone into it. Maybe leans a bit too much towards the visually realistic for my personal tastes, but I'm very much looking forward to more of it.

On a mildly related note, the Lone Wolf gamebooks are getting reprinted as of next year. Joe Dever is rewriting the first one, and also writing four more - numbers 29-32 that he never got to do before.

The one on the encyclopedia scan has pupils too - it's just harder to make them out because of the different lightsource. Here's mine, placed alongside a UK penny and a rule for size reference. Every time the scanner passed over the face of the coin a monster generated somewhere. It's true. http://s...

I think I've only ever played through DM with a full party on my first two or three plays back in the ST days. Since then I've always gone for a duo - because I like to have them wearing the Lyte and Darc armours, or a soloist with Flamebain and Boots of Speed. When I go solo I pretty much always ta...

I couldn't find anything in any existing threads about Deep Dungeon, but I'm completely stuck and have been for a couple of days. Hopefully it's not a bug with the dungeon itself... I'm at the 'Find a way out' section, at the 'Poison Chambers'. I have a closed portcullis behind me, a closed one at t...
