Re: Help with buying a new laptop

I don't think I'd risk those upgrades on the new M1 machines! And they don't support dual boot anymore, at least not for Windows. For that, I'd need Parallels and the Arm version of Windows 11. It's an option down the line, but I'm not bothered about it initially. I'm done with tinkering with tech, ...

Re: I'm done with big main-stream games

I've not played any games in over 6 months, indie, main-stream, or otherwise! And that doesn't bother me at all. I'm using my spare time now to get back into creative writing, and I love it :)

Re: Help with buying a new laptop

Thanks Cows. I ended up buying an interesting laptop, a modular upgradeable machine from a new startup, the Framework . However, I was unimpressed by flimsy feel of the body compared to Macs, the noisy fans and the generated heat, so I'm returning it and getting a refund. I'm now going to buy a M1 M...

Aha! Ironic that you've just said that, as I'm no longer doing any of this. I've given up on my digital creations and have instead returned to writing -- I really want to finish a children's book I started years ago and get it published, so that's where my focus is now.

I've followed that for a while. Was tempted to get one, but then realized that it was just nostalgia at play, I would never really use it, and it would be a complete waste of money. Your mileage might vary ;-)

Re: Introducing 3DSB

This sounds amazing, but will the simulation respect the size of the champions? For example, If I'm playing as Tiggy or Gando, I expect the VR experience to accurately reflect their lower viewpoint. Because if it doesn't, I will claim you're being "heightist" and will sue the pants off ya!

Re: How to close the Pit at the DIABOLICAL DEMON DIRECTOR?

I made a mistake when using the forum and ended up in the wrong category. I've now moved this to the CSB forum. The platform is an Android smartphone and the game is suitaby from the Google PlayStore. There are no "officially allowed" conversions of the game to be found on smartphones. If...

Re: How to close the Pit at the DIABOLICAL DEMON DIRECTOR?

Hello Bell. You said in your first post that you're playing on a smartphone. Please be aware that any smartphone version may not be exactly the same as the original game... Including bugs like this one you've discovered. I would recommend using CSBWin on Windows if you want to be sure you're playing...

Help with buying a new laptop

HI all, I'm in the market for a new laptop. I've done a lot of research already but can't seem to find anything that meets all my requirements, so I thought I'd ask the hive mind here. I'm looking for a workhorse laptop for media creation (latest photoshop, some video editing, sound editing and 3D w...

Re: Dungeons of Dreadrock

I don't usually play games in this style, but based on Sophia's comments I will definitely check it out. I'm making a conscious effort now to abandon mainstream gaming and investigate the indie stuff a bit more and this looks like a great place to start. Lovely art style for starters, and looks very...

Yep, same for me too. Obviously I still like retro games, but I certainly wouldn't enjoy the hassle of playing them on actual retro hardware! Emulation all the way these days... :)

Shadows of Sergoth - Amiga dungeon crawler

Spotted this on Indie Retro News, a NEW Amiga dungeon crawler! "Shadows of Sergoth" -- it seems you need an actual Amiga to play it, so it's gonna be super, super niche in 2022. They do supply a digitial version though, so I guess that could work with WinUAE or similar emulator. It's so st...

I'm done with big main-stream games

I was looking forward to Dying Light 2, having sunk many hours into the original. But I learned that it includes Denuvo anti-tamper, and as I don't buy games that include that tech, the decison not to buy DL2 was made for me. Few other main stream games appeal to me these days, plus I have little ti...

Re: Questions about DSB/ESB

I noticed an addition in an earlier version, a mention of sys_tick_second(). I'm curious what this is for / how it might be used? Can it be used to create real-world timers -- for example, "You have five minutes to do X." ??? If so, how would I go about that?

Re: Questions about DSB/ESB

FYI, I've just updated the DSB Versions thread to include everything from 0.55 - 0.79, as it was very out of date. That thread makes it clear how amazing you've been Sophia for continuing to support and maintain DSB for such a long time. I'm seriously impressed with everything you've achieved with D...

Re: Questions about DSB/ESB

16! Wow :) I was thinking more along the lines of Grimrock: left click to take the item out of the hand, right click to use it. But I understand that's a big change, and as I don't have an actual use case anyway, don't worry. Last question for now: You previously added a setting to the gui_info for ...

Re: Questions about DSB/ESB

Cool, I'll try it out and see what happens!

Another question: is there a way of stopping right-click from opening the inventory by default? It would be cool to use right-click to offer alternate actions on the combat buttons, but right now the "open inventory" function always wins.

Re: What is the better browser to use?

Unfortunately, I hate to say it, but they are at the point where they need to upgrade. None of the current browsers have versions that work on XP, so they are limited to very old versions -- and as Sophia points out, that's not even the main problem. XP itself is unsupported now, and it's a security...

Wow, that sounds perfect, thank you very much! Another quick one: If I'm building a game that doesn't use any DM stuff at all, and I want to start from scratch, can I simply redefine the obj and gfx tables from scratch? Ideally I'd like ESB to only show my new stuff, presumably a redefined obj would...

Re: Questions about DSB/ESB

Only 4 bitmaps in my test sequence which goes 1-2-3-4-3-2. It's a bit clunky so I might need to increase that to smooth it out a bit. The anim needs to start at frame 1 each time it's displayed, otherwise it looks broken.

Re: Questions about DSB/ESB

It does already exist. It's dsb_mouse_override (bmp), and takes the image you want to use. Pass it nil or false to remove the override image. Ah fabulous, thanks. I'll add it to the wiki. Where is the animation? If the animated bitmap is associated with an inst, you can use dsb_set_animtimer (inst,...

Is there a way of changing the mouse cursor on demand? Some kind of dsb_mouse_bitmap() ? I was certain something like this existed but can't find anything on the wiki? Also, is there a way of forcing an animated bitmap to re-start at frame 0 before it's displayed? At the moment, animation timers see...
