Re: Important Items to Keep With You Instead of Discarding.

They come in handy when you encounter mummies and trollins again and help against scorpions (although not as much as fireballs). Oh, upon rereading I meant to say that couatls are too tough to take on with daggers, but I phrased it badly and I can no longer edit the post. I usually just cast 3 poiso...

Re: Different Difficulty Levels for the Same Monster Type?

That's when and where I noticed it too. Screamers have high HP on level 4, but pathetic attacks. Which means they are the best place to work on your ninja levels.

Re: Important Items to Keep With You Instead of Discarding.

You'll want everybody to have ranged weapons available. They are especially useful against Mummies, Trollins, skeletons, vexiriks, and gigglers (though I mostly poison bolt or fireball the last one). They can help against scorpions, rusters, swamp slimes, and oitus. Shooting an arrow is more effecti...

Re: Elven Boots vs. Actual Foot Armor?

If it is a choice between foot plate or the elven boots, I'd base that decision on the champion's strength. Since you have strong ones, go for the foot plate. If it a choice between leather or suede boots or elven boots for somebody like Tiggy or Wuuf, go for the elven boots. The armor benefit is in...

Re: Important Items to Keep With You Instead of Discarding.

The Compass is something you will want if you want to return to level 2 for water (which you probably will need as there is no water on levels 3 or 4), and it is very helpful for mapping or following a map. You will want a single gold key to open the "shortcut", but I don't recall any more...

Re: Different Difficulty Levels for the Same Monster Type?

The monsters get higher health the deeper you go. That is known. It's talked about here http://dmweb.free.fr/?q=node/1198 http://dmweb.free.fr/?q=node/1363 The screamers on level 4 will take a surprising beating, about as much as a worm, but their attacks are still pathetic. Good time to work on nin...

Re: Elven Boots vs. Actual Foot Armor?

Thanks for the advice - I'm using a pretty strong group (Halk, Hissa, Sonja, and Stamm), but I always seem to want even more carrying capacity. I'm the same way, I rarely take any but the champions with the most carrying capacity (Halk, Stamm, Hissa, Sonja, Daroou), Although I occasionally will try...

Re: Elven Boots vs. Actual Foot Armor?

Honestly, I don't really notice that much improvement using the "plate" type armor vs the "mail" type armor and hosen. Which is not that dramatic over leather armor and boots. Heck, regardless of what we know now from looking at raw game data, nobody I knew who played the game be...

Re: Elven Boots vs. Actual Foot Armor?

All your champions should get a turn in the front row to work on fighter levels. It is the only way to make them tougher AND permanently increase carrying capacity. On the first two levels you should have your weaker champions be in front except when fighting the rockpiles. Use daggers or punches an...

I know that I tried leaving my ready hands all empty, only for the gigglers to either steal a weapon or from inventory.
I distinctly recall being frustrated at my solution to the problem back when I was a kid.

Re: Best way to level?

Gigglers only grab stuff you hold in your hands. Depends on the version, in the IIGS version they can grab from the upper-left slot in your backpack if you have nothing in hand, and they move on to the first occupied slot if you leave that blank too. They will steal from the left hand first however...

Re: Best way to level?

The poison ball spell (OH VEN) does damage over time, the only foes it can instantly kill are wasps. The poison Bolt spell (DES VEN) can kill some enemies instantly. Generally, the wasps on level 6 (The riddle room) can be killed by LO OH VEN, although there is one group of two that needs na UM OH V...

Re: Best way to level?

Thanks for the additional information, slickrcbd! Re: Best way to level?

Honestly, I never bothered to grind once I could cast any spell at PAL level. I should note that it is usually easier to cast MON VI than PAL FUL BRO NETA in terms of success. Then again I rarely cast fireshield, pretty much only on level 8 (stray fireballs shooting around) and level 13 (with the bl...

Re: New player: How to use the interface better

Yeah, I had more trouble with some of the larger groups of random mooks just getting to Mangar, the final battle wasn't that tough. DMST was OP in that game, probably why they got rid of it in later games along with REDE. They made the strongest demons and undead a joke respectively. SPBI also almos...

Re: New player: How to use the interface better

The use of a magic box you refer to, is the only place in DM where you do no need a magic box. But, it is not necessary, what you get is not a must. I know, I beat the game without ever figuring out that puzzle. It was not until I got the hint book that I learned of that secret. Heck, I think that ...

Re: New player: How to use the interface better

I'm also a bit torn between mapping or not. I like mapping. but the levels are a bit too big and unlike Wizardry, the game runs on real-time so it's uncomfortable. I have discovered a spell that does damage, though I'm not sure how it works yet! Guess I'll need to explore more :) You can pause the ...

Re: New player: How to use the interface better

I conquered the worm level 30 years ago. I'm just saying I still recall that it seemed to jump an order of magnitude in difficulty. Re: New player: How to use the interface better

Note that DM is basically "tutorial mode" compared to CSB so it generally takes things pretty easy on you for the first couple of levels or so, after which it starts to ramp up. But still nowhere near to the point of most of CSB :D. I agree that levels 2 and 3 are kinda tutorial levels, I...

Re: New player: How to use the interface better

Hello! I'm playing Dungeon Master for the first time and, while I'm enjoying the game tremendously, I'm not sure if the problems I have with the interface are due to my lack of experience, not knowing better or simply flaws of the original game. And I wondered if you could help me out. For example:...

Re: Best way to level?

I looked at the source code again Am I understanding that, to carry on your example, if your wizard only cast fireballs until he was an "Adept wizard", he'd be an adept at "fire" skills, but only an apprentice at any other wizard skill? I know some people say they only use fireb...

Re: Best way to level?

Well, I know the 2nd edition hint book had errors navigating the pit maze on level 5 Treasure Stores, and at least one other error, so the part about it being beneficial to level evenly as you level up faster could be wrong also. I haven't really looked at it in years save for the well-worn divide o...

Re: Best way to level?

Maybe I'm going on outdated info, but I thought the levels were partially determined by averaging the various hidden sub-skills, and that by leveling them more evenly you would need less XP to go from say UM Master to ON Master than you would by focusing on one skill exclusively. I think it was stat...

Re: Best way to level?

As I said, there are multiple subskills in the Fighter/Priest/Ninja/Wizard skills, so training a variety of stuff helps level faster. I'm not saying to use all that stuff, just when you are grinding (which I rarely do save for clearing out the Screamer Store on level 4 using lessor attacks like dagg...

Re: Best way to level?

Using the level 14 spot to 'up' your ability to cast high-level spells is a good use of this option. Using the Vorpal Blade for the wizardry/sorcery levels does not cost mana, so no waiting time for the mana to be restored. In regard to the unlimited supply of rats on level 9: You still have to go ...

Not to mention that the invisibility would have limited effectiveness since the party has a moving light source. That alone would tip the monsters off that something is amiss and make them come to investigate.

Re: Best way to level?

Thing is, you get significantly more experience in combat (when a creature is in an adjacent square) than on your own. Otherwise, for solo training in a safe place, yeah, going from level 8 (The Void) right to the bottom of level 14 via the central staircase is probably the best place to train solo....

One feel you will never simulate is the not so good mouse with it's crummy roller ball. A sort of lag or inaccuracy, some small play with hysteresis. Actually a mouse with a ball can be quite good when it is new, it's just that they need to be cleaned a lot more often than a modern mouse, and they ...
