[Fixed for V0.44] Ninja-Archmastering bug

Post by LordLibrasulus »

Merge the Firestaff with the Power Gem. Make your way to the staircase opened by the Winged Key - now it is blocked. Throw an item at the blocked wall and ... voilá, you get ~ 4 Ninja-levels.

I cannot see how that can possibly happen - the three things are totally unrelated in the code.

The only possibility is that all the stuff before is complete coincidence, and there's just a bug with throwing any item, at any time, against a wall (which would cause other problems that other people would have seen).

If you can save me a save game just as you describe at the point just before you throw the item, I'd believe you, but otherwise I think this is a wind up

Also, what version? Wasn't there an XP bug in some previous version?

So you only get the Ninja levels by throwing at that exact wall? No others? Seems very odd to me!

Didn't tried it on much other walls. The thrown item just disapears/goes through the wall.

Oh, and concerning the bug report... i should read stickies... ;-)
Which file do you need, Gilbert? Just the save-file?

Has this bug only occured once or is it reproducable?
Does this result in a regular level-up, just as if you had gained lots of experience points, or does it only increase the value of the ninja level itself?
Parting is all we know from Heaven, and all we need of hell.

Yep - just the save file should be fine for this one.

Can you save the game right infront of the wall in question so all I have to do is throw an item to get the XP gain.

Thanks for the file - I believe you now!

The actual root cause of the bug is actually nothing to do with what you thought it was (which is fortunate, as it would have been impossible as I thought!), but instead can be reproduced by standing on a set of stairs that goes nowhere. For example,

WWW
WSW
WWW

(W = wall, S = stairs)

It just so happens that this particular configuration only occurs in DM in the situation that you hit.

When the party ends up in this situation, the engine doesn't know which direction they should be facing, and lots of other mechanics (including throwing of items and XP) break...now all fixed for V0.44.
