[Not a bug] scared monsters

Post by rob3034 »

im not sure if this has been resolved with a previous post "reluctant monster AI", but this is slightly different.

monsters on RTC DM come to attack your party, but when you have given them afew fireballs, or chops of the axe and they are almost 'dead', then turn and leg it, so you have to run after them to finish them off! is this intentional?

on ST DM they seem to stay and fight to the bitter ends of their lives. :)

Wouldn't you leg it if someone was bashing you over the head with an Axe?

RTC is in the spirit of the original game, but it isn't identical and offers a lot of subtle improvements. Scaredy-cat critters is one of them.

on ST DM they seem to stay and fight to the bitter ends of their lives.

in DM/CSB ST each kind of monster have a fear factor from 0 to 15. Gigglers and mummies are very "scary", while rock piles or stone golems will fight to the dead. If the fear factor is high, there`s greater probability that monster will try to run away when injuried (or scared, for example by a war cry or horn of fear..)

Of course, some monsters are so weak, that you won`t see them running away - for mummies one good bash will close the case... :D

The fear factor is also sowehow concerned with the brightness-light factor (more dark = bigger fear); but it doesn`t due to these kinds of monsters that can see in darkness

Rob, take a look at this; there`s an ADGE monster editor; you can find a fear factor (bravery) for a Rive in this example:

you can use ADGE only with original Atari ST DM/CSB version converted to Windows! You cannot use it with RTC, I gave you that link just to show you how fear factor changes in original DM/CSB ! You can change monster stats in RTC directly by RTC editor!

PS. Here`s a comparition between bravery factor and teleportation factor in ST DM if you`re interested:

Code: Select all

Scorpion B 9 T 2
Slime Devil B 10 T 3
Giggler B 0 T 7
Flying Eye B 10 T 9
Hellhound B 15 T 5
Ruster B 3 T 4
Screamer B 15 T 1
Rock Pile B 12 T 2
Rive B 6 T 4
Stone Golem B 15 T 3
Mummy B 9 T 5
Black Flame B 10 T 5
Skeleton B 9 T 6
Coualt B 3 T 5
Vexirk B 5 T 13 *
Worm B 10 T 1
Antman B 4 T 2
Muncher B 15 T 1
Deth Knight B 15 T 7
Zytaz B 7 T 10 *
Water Elemental B 7 T 7
Oitu B 6 T 6
Demon B 15 T 11
Lord Chaos B 3 T 15 *
Dragon B 7 T 11
Lord Order B 3 T 15 *
Grey Lord B 3 T 15 *

oh never mind, I was just comparing these factors in other thread wondering if teleportation really works in DM for other monsters except Lord Chaos... there`s no strong prooves for this.

The fear factor for RTC monsters can be seen in the RTCEditor...

Remember that RTC uses a different "fear" model from the original game so values won't match up exactly, but the relative values between different monsters should be OK. Let me know if any are wildly out.

As an interstign thing, rock monsters CAN run away adamo - you just won't spot it since their front and back views look the same, and of course they are so slow...but they do run sometimes!
