Now that RTC is no longer updated, now what?

Post by captainx »

Hello everyone,

I really like the RTC software that Mr. Gilbert has created....but without regular updates or bug fixes how can this project continue? Would it not be helpful to the Dungeon Community to release the code so those of us who want to continue to support bug fixes and development can do so? Is Mr. Gilbert willing to release the code for free? for a fee? etc? Would really like to hear back from someone in the know on this issue as I feel it is critical to the continued development of this great project.

Just wondering..

Thank you,

CaptainX

The core engine has been tested and patched many times over. The vast majority of the bugs that keep popping up are by ingenious peeps who are attempting to push the game to it's limits.

Think about this, are there more bugs in the original DM game or RTC, based on that first dungeon?

GG will not release the source code. There are some proprietary things in there, but more importantly it's his code and he didn't want to release it!

The engine can do more than what it was originally supposed to do. There will always be feature creep by people who want it to do one more thing it couldn't do before.
Was unable to (permenantly) kill off ian_scho (Haynuus), Ameena, oh_brother (Westian), money (Falkor), raixel (Petal) and Lord_Bones (Aurek) in the DM D&D game Time's Champions!

CONGRATULATIONS TO THOSE WHO MADE THE GAME WHAT IT WAS - GREAT!

George has worked on RTC for 7-8 years, I'm not surprised he's had enough! ;-) That doesn't stop me from posting bug reports when I find them, though ;-) -- my theory is that it's best to document stuff as it's found, even if the hope of it being fixed is small.

v0.49 is pretty stable, but it does still contain a lot of bugs and I'm finding new ones all the time. The original DM game had very few, so I'd say FTL still win in that regard ;-) No offence, GG! As a dungeon designer, if you're aware of the bugs though, you can sometimes work around them.

Aye, after all the makin' of the dungeon scripts and so no wonder GG wants to retire... or does he? has he said so? at least me has nay seen.

Anyway, it is not 100% sure that 0.49 will be the last and the best RTC forever. GG has been alamost as long times without makin' upgrades before too, and then he surprised us all with somethin' fantastic. And if he's really retired who's sayin' RTC will retire wit' him? He has probaly some friends and relatives... and if me were him me would pass the project to one of them to continue exceptin' me were gonna to retire.

I have a beta of v0.50 from June last year ;-) But there's no point building any dungeons with that version if others can't use them ;-)

What I would do was - writing all the known bugs in points and send an email with them to George. Eventually ask him to release an existing unreleased version 5.0 (btw, what is status of that version? I guess it is unfinished yet? or is it finished and unreleased version?)

If both these is not possible and GG is not interested in fixing bugs, it`d be better for someone to point all known bugs as a warning to the designers (example: 1. don`t do ......., because .......; 2. do not set a trigger to ......., because the game may crash; 3. do not resize the ........., because there would be a garbage on a screen; 4. don`t you ever think of adding item X on monster Y, unless you want to loose all your data ;) ).
These are just examples, as I don`t have idea about RTC. But some of a warnings like these might be good for unexperienced designers if the bugs are impossible to be fixed.

I'm still here - lurking away :D

Real life keeps getting in the way, but I still have every intention to return! As Gambit says above, there's a candidate V0.50 which fixes several of the bugs that have been reported; it's just a question of finding time to polish it up a bit more and fix some of the more recent critical issues found and it's good to go. With a couple of young kids around however, finding time these days is easier said than done...

As always it's good to know you are lurking, and are distracted by fun real life things not nasty ones! Well, I assume the kids are sometimes fun :D

I'll chime in and add that I'm glad you have positive stuff in your real-life going on that prevents you from working on RTC. And it's good to hope again for new versions.

@GG: I know that I'm late with this, but "good to hear from ya". I'm glad that it's the positive things and not the negative that are distracting you from your RTC work. Have fun looking after the kiddies, got 1 of my own, so I know how hard it can be to find time :P

For ease of GG´s sighting
maybe you should all make a summary of the past issues as well as proposals / questions not solved yet
revolving around Return to Chaos - RTC. I guess even if you lurk you could easily miss out on some issues with all the stuff going on with RTC... just an idea. Could speed up response time et al.

It's not necessary, everything is in the Bugs and Suggestions forum (they are a summary in themselves) and GG usually works through those and ticks them off when they are done.

Well, look at it this way.
No update, that is ultimate stability. No more issues from updates.
As of Win XP not maintained anymore, I love it this way.

well, I wouldn't classify RTC junk, it's capable of anything except graphics which by way of a miracle he has fiddled with that, too. I think we just might see some pretty cool things with RTC in the future without an update.
