Dungeon Master for PC: Chinese and Korean versions

This page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dungeon_Ma ... er_game%29 mentions that DM was released in 6 languages, including Chinese and Korean (we already know about English, French, German and Japanese).

I asked the question to Doug Bell about the Chinese and Korean versions and he confirmed that they existed. (see here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Dunge ... er_game%29 )

If anyone has any more information about these versions or the game themselves, please share you knowledge with us all.

Note: I already posted about this back in March 2006. Now the post lies in the middle of the very large thread called "INN OF LOST SOULS: general chit-chat thread". I wanted to make a dedicated topic in case someone can supply any more information about these unknown versions.

It was news to me when I saw you'd posted that on Wikipedia, the first I'd ever heard of them. So I'm afraid I can't help! :-(

interesting stuff on Wikipedia!
I tried to find something about the chineese version on the net*, but I only get a virus!!! ;)

*- searched "Dungeon Master" phrase in latin script in chineese language in explorer, but 95% of sites showed up was for D&D, not exactly Dungeon Master game.
BTW it`s interesting what results shows up when you enter a "Dungeon Master" phrase to the Explorer and set it to one language only, not english (nederlanden for example). There`s a lot of reviews on the net.

quote from Wikipedia:
Chaos Strikes Back was an expansion to Dungeon Master, not a sequel. At least it was marketed as such - "Expansion Set #1" is written on the front cover and the back cover says "requires Dungeon Master".
aww it`s a shame there was only one #expansion set (CSB)! :( I would really like to play something like ExpSet#2 (=CSB2 or smth)... maybe, after releasing CSB, FTL was going to prepare new ExpSet, but abandoned this project for making DM2?

apparently it did not exist- see comment from some korean at the end*
- maybe the company only did the chinese version or it was like north korea?
or the company decided to like have a language selection , but unlikely since 2 companies for
chinese and korean laguage port, so really no idea..*shrug
see for yourself:(from wikiipedia)
Languages

This article mentions that the game was translated from English into German, French, Japanese, Chinese and Korean. I have never heard of any Chinese or Korean versions. Doug, can you confirm if these translations ever existed? on which platforms? Thanks, Christophe (from The DM and CSB Encyclopaedia web site)

I can definitely confirm it. These two versions were handled by two different companies, respectively, and I no longer recall the names of the companies. These were only PC-based versions, although the exact machines and configurations I'm unsure of. If I can get a hold of Wayne Holder, who is the world's worst person about answering the phone and responding to email, he would probably know. I "think" the Chinese company (although perhaps this is the Korean company) was named Unalys (or something phonetically close to it). I think I even have a copy of the Chinese version, but I'll have to dig it out of the box in my closet. But yes, I can unequivacably state that these versions exist. —Doug Bell talk•contrib 18:58, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

*I am a korean. And I've never heard of Korean Version. And I don't think there ever was. Dungeon Master was not that favorite game in korea. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Khalon (talk • contribs) 06:24, 14 September 2008 (UTC)

edit:
there is a similar game: 초롱이의 모험 (Chorongi-ui Moheom) / Korean Dungeon Boy - PC-DOS (May 1991)
http://hardcoregaming101.net/korea/part ... other1.htm
it says that there was a never released "Hwarang Sogong" on what this Dungeon Boy is based on
maybe that was the dungeon master version?
edit2: nope ! no dm versions..maybe if you really want to dig in there, you could contact these guys?
(disappeared or unrelease korean games)

I have never found anything about these chinese and korean versions of DM. I seriously doubt they ever existed. I suppose the Doug Bell remembers FTL working with companies on adaptations for these countries, but I guess the final products were never released.
However, I once found this about a korean version of DM2: http://www.dsnet.co.kr/support/library/c/06119.html
But I have no other information about it.

Shame the picture quality isn't good, i can hardly distinguish the characters, though the overall scene make me think about the dm's cover (with the torch :) )

great find anyway

Chinese version of DM??? most probably not, but found this pic on a chinese site

Image

caption says : First-person perspective, walk around in a maze, the top of the screen the right are the menu (google chinese-english translation :) )

Looks like a console port to me, or maybe just another clone..

Edit

Title says : Dungeon Master|FTL Games|1991.12.20

hum, hum.. :)

Just looks like DM2 to me, though I think that was made in 1995 or so, not 1991...

On the screenshot, the Chinese alphabet looks suspisiously similar to our alphabet. I think I might be recognising some of the characters (letters). I would even dare to say that it's the same alphabet, although I'm not a professional in this field.

Alright, tell us: what's so Chinese about it?

I finally found some proof that the Chinese version of Dungeon Master (or should I say 地下城主) does exist. It is on sale here for an expensive price: https://goods.ruten.com.tw/item/show?21848083841636
The company name "Unalis" mentioned by Doug Bell appears on top of the box front. The back has Chinese text and also this: "Mandarin version translated and exclusively distributed by Unalis Corporation".

The screenshots don't look very Chinese. "FLASK IN HAND"?

It must have been tough putting Chinese characters into 5x7 pixel matrix.

I don't know if the game itself was actually translated, maybe it was and it's only the screenshots that were not updated (they are the same on many versions, and contain things that are not in any version of the final game anyway).
Anyway, the Japanese versions that we know do display kanjis (larger than 5x7 pixels) so that would not be a problem in itself.

Nice find!
The link just below the floppy disk image goes to a OneDrive where the file dated "Dec 12, 2014" contains high quality scans of the box, floppy, registration card and also the full manual and the adventurer's handbook!

Excellent! I wonder if we'll ever find a working copy of the disk image... would be very interesting to see what version of the interface is in the game. I'm assuming that it'll be the same approach used in the Japanese versions. Maybe we'll never know...

Now we just need to find the Korean version and the journey will be complete! :)
