DM2 Music

Post by Mophus »

Hi guys,
I have just converted my DM2 MIDI collection into MP3s and I'm looking for some data to fill the tags.

(1)
Who's the composer of the soundtrack? Wikipedia lists the following artists: Allister Brimble, Rick Jackson, Brian Luzietti, Anthony N. Putson. However, since there are several versions of the game with each version having its own soundtrack, I was wondering if all of these people also were involved in the PC version.

(2)
I guess, that there are no official track titles available for the MIDI files. Since it's a while since I've played DM2 the last time, I may not remember correctly, but as far as I remember each place has it's own music track. If that's true, is there maybe a list of places and the corresponding music tracks. I would use them for the title tags.

Cheers,
Mophus the Healer

I don't know about composers but I can remember a few locations where some of the music plays. Haven't played the game for a while now, though, so may not be able to specifically remember where every track in the game shows up ;).

Mophus...

Have a look here: http://dmweb.free.fr/?q=node/612

I haven't read them, but there are scans of the booklet from the PC version. Maybe the names are in there.

Thank you. According to the manual the PC music is composed by Allister Brimble and Rick Jackson.

However, I'm still looking for a track name list. This is what I have so far (not much). Feel free to complete the list. ;)
  1. Title theme (Outtake?) -- I don't remember hearing this music in the game. Could be an outtake originally indended as the title theme.
  2. "Thorn Demon forest"
  3. First village

Let's try.

I changed the order according to DM2 ingame numbering. And I give as reference the order found in the midi archive from dmweb (which you probably used).
There are several musics that are not used in game, probably because they had not really a place to fit in.
  1. (01) Axemen Forest [Not working ingame]
  2. (02) Boss-like Theme [Not used ingame]
  3. (24) Moon Clan [Places: Champion Cryocells, Magick Merchant, Moon Clan Village]
  4. (03) Caverns [Places: Wolves' Lair Caves, Bat Caves, Skullkeep Secret Entrance]
  5. (04) Battering Rams Trap
  6. (25) Progressive March [Not used ingame]
  7. (05) Fire Orbs Cavern
  8. (26) Ghost Mysteries [Not used ingame]
  9. (06) Tiger Striped Worms Trap
  10. (07) Sun Clan Zone / Cloud Clan Zone
  11. (08) Guitar Melody v1 [Soundcard Test Music]
  12. (27) Guitar Melody v2 [Not used ingame]
  13. (09) Skullkeep [Places: Teleporter Ghosts, 7-Doors Puzzle, The Furnace, Skullkeep Entrance]
  14. (10) Machinery [Place: Skullkeep Engines Room]
  15. (28) The Crypt [Places: Shock Trap, Wolves' Lair, The Crypt]
  16. (11) Dark Vexirks
  17. (12) Dru Tan
  18. (29) Sun Clan Village
  19. (13) Gnomus (Mussorgsky) [Place: Guard Archers Level]
  20. (14) Skeletons Cavern [Place: Cavern before Dru Tan]
  21. (15) Storm's End [Place: Sun Clan Vortexes]
  22. (16) Bydlo (Mussorgsky) [Place: Sun Clan Thorn Demons]
  23. (17) Trickery [Places: Giggler Puzzle, Lightning Clan & Moon Clan Zones with Thieves]
  24. (18) Tree Gorgons' Marsh
  25. (19) Crystal Room (0/3) [Not used ingame]
  26. (20) Crystal Room (1/3) [Not used ingame]
  27. (21) Crystal Room (2/3) [Not used ingame]
  28. (22) Crystal Room Full Theme
  29. (23) Lord Dragoth
By the way, I'm interested to know a little more about your mp3 rendition; did you apply significant sound quality improvement like specific soundfont, VSTi or any other ?

If there are 64 'levels', then i think this table is related to the music:
index is 'level', result is songindex (Sphenx' list).

table =
3, 18, 15, 28, 5, 13, 13, 19, 16, 14, 13, 13, 17, 7, 22, 15,
18, 18, 18, 18, 4, 9, 18, 15, 3, 24, 23, 21, 18, 1, 3, 3,
3, 10, 3, 4, 15, 17, 29, 23, 20, 10, 23, 4, 18, 3, no, no,
no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, 15

we now just need the level names ;)

btw: hugs Sphenx hard!

Yes, I've used Timidity++ and SGM-V2.01 to convert the MIDIs into 24 bit. And the result sounds really, really nice... at least for me. However, I'm not an audio expert.
