Funny, a number of new ones have made the list since I first posted in this thread. Just finished Knights of the old Republic recently. The combat was a bit dull at times (certainly early on before you have force powers to play with), but it had a great story and one of the biggest "wtf?" moments I have ever come across in a game (in a good way).
terkio wrote:Have you listed these two ?

Knightmare http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knightmare ... eo_game%29

Bloodwych http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloodwych
I played Knightmare and really liked it, but my copy suffered from the "grate bug" - every time the party walked over a grate the game froze. I took it back to the shop and got Populos 2 instead. Never played Bloodwych.

@ Seriously Unserious - wow, that is a real old-school fest!

Yeah, I definitely prefer the older-style RPG's to the newer ones. Although Fable 2 and Dungeon Lords are a couple that break this trend for me. I'd love to find out about any similar ones that I could try out though.

I have played Dungeon Siege, I did mention that one in the honorable mention part of my list -- actually it is Dungeon Siege 2 that I've played, and I also have the Broken Worlds expansion as well, but I haven't gotten that far yet, I keep getting distracted by other games and lose track of my party'sprogress... :( still, DS is a good game though.

I've also played a similar game called Sacred, didn't get far though as the hard drive of the computer I'd installed it on crashed shortly after I started the game and I couldn't find the CD for the longest time to re-install it on another computer, but I definitely will have another go at both games, after I've finished my RTC custom dungeon that is... That project's been on the go off an on for several years now and I'd like to get it done before I distract myself with anything else.

I'm also open to any other suggestions of good RPG's.

I have played Divine Divinity (or some similar name), and once passed the seemingly "typical" scenario (you know, evil mage plotting to conquer the universe, by first destroying it), the game was huge, very open with a lot of quests and stuff to discover.

I just did a search, and found this article. That game definitely looks like something I'm interested in.

I've played Divinity II, Ego Draconis (the sequel to Divine Dvinity/Beyond Divinity), which is fun. It also has an expansion, Flames of Vengeance, or you can buy both the base game and the expansion combined into one, called the Dragon Knight Saga. Boxed copies not availble of that, though - you have to download it from somewhere (think it was only released as boxed in Germany). That's the combined version - the basic game (just Ego Draconis) you can buy boxed. I did - found it for a fiver and thought it looked cool so played it. It was great fun, and then the ending made me end up buying the full Dragon Knight Saga (includes patches for the original game as well) and playing that :D. It's all good fun - building your character is interesting (you're not limited to choosing a class from the beginning and then being stuck as that for the whole game - you can decide which areas to put your skill points in as you go, to build up melée skills or magic spells or whatever), there's loads of little sidequests, many of which have more than one way to solve them. There's also quite a bit of secret, hidden stuff you can get in various ways. And there's quite a lot of humour in it, little in-jokes and references to other stuff, but it's not massively "THIS IS A REFERENCE TO SOMETHING POPULAR! YOU MUST FIND IT FUNNY NOW!" the way some things can be, like when you see something that's made blatantly obvious it's a reference to something but you don't know what, therefore it's annoying that you know you're missing something. I think all the stuff in this game is more subtle. For example, there's a bloke you can find out in the wilds who claims to be two people stuck in one body - one is an intelligent professor-type person called Clyde, while the other is a savage, short-tempered axe-wielder called Jackal. I need to replay it again at some point - apart from the fact that it's generally good fun, I also like the music (and now have all my favourite tracks on my computer :D).
Meanwhile, I've not played any Dungeon Siege games, nor the first Sacred, though I have played Sacred II. That's quite good fun as well :).

@Ameena: Have you ever played Dungeon Lords? It's made by David Bradley, the creator of some of the Wizardry games, including Wizardry 5,6,7. It also features an open-ended style of character development. Although you do choose a class at the beginning of the game, and can choose a secondary class later on, your development isn't limited to your chosen class(es), but you do get bonuses for developing your character within the chosen class, so a spell caster can learn more powerful spells within their area of spell casting then a non-spell caster could, for example, but even a fighter can still learn some good spells, or choose one of the spell-casting classes as a secondary class, such as starting out as a fighter and then choosing to become a mage later on.

I liked Beyond Divinity.
I could not play Divinity II, my PC is not powerful enough.

Because of this thread, I just had a new go at Dungeon Siege.
The Box "Dungeon Siege Legends of Aranna" has 3 CD. it installs TWO games.
1_Dungeon Siege. You start from a farm. Later you buy a mule to help carry your stuff.
2_Extension Legends of Aranna. You start from a village in the mountains under snow. Later you buy a two legged reptile creature to carry your stuff.
This creature has more attack power with its nose horn, better than the mule that only kicks. Your party can be up to 6.
You can hit and upgrade in four skills. Close combat, distance combat, natural magic, war magic. There are many items and you find a lot. You waste a lot of time with too many items. I like to summon creatures, a nice way to start an attack.

Dungeon Siege II, I recall I got stuck at an enormous dragon that keeps sending, creatures while you are supposed to kill it with a giant ballista.

I think I have played Dungeon Lords, yes - if it's the one I'm thinking of, I played as some kind of erm, doglike/catlike humanoid creature. I recall that it was quite good fun, but monsters were only found in specific areas (for example, there was one little corner of the world which had a load of fire drakes hovering above their nests), which meant that the majority of the world was just empty of everything except trees and rocks. Can't remember too much about it - it was a few years ago that I played it. Haven't played any of the Wizardry series, though I've heard of them - I seem to recall they go back a very long way, the earliest ones possibly pre-dating DM? Anyway...I have so many games in progress atm, and more that I haven't started yet, and others that I've played before but want to play again. Due to Peter Molyneux appearing in a few recent Yogscast vids and talking about his older games as well as his new upcoming game, I've started playing Populous II again in DOSBox. And I'm still halfway through building a volcano in Minecraft, so I need to get back to that at some point. And I have a few other games I should probably get back to. And some that I want to get. And stuff. Aaarrr, stupid work making me waste all my good gaming time :P.

ahh, but work does provide you with the money to buy all these games you want to play though.

As for Dungeon Lords, it does have pre-set encounters, but, at least the version I have (1.4?) also has random encounters, which in some areas can include fire drakes. so I've never had any problems with the game being big and empty. If you have a version earlier then 1.4 you should be able to download patches to upgrade to version 1.4, through the developer's web site.

Yeah. Those fire drakes were very challenging early on, I remember. The first time I encountered them, just 1 of them was powerful enough to burn my character to a crisp faster then I can say burnt to a crisp. The only way to defeat one of them was to lure it to a thick forest and hit it from a distance with arrows and spells, and keep moving and in and out of the trees to avoid their fireballs. It takes ages to kill one that way but that's better then being burnt to a crisp in seconds at least, and you get a massive hoard of experience if you can manage it.

Lol yeah. I was a much lower level than them too, when I first met them. But I'd discovered by that point (or may have discovered at that point) that mobs have a line which they won't cross. I ended up training one of the drakes all th way back to some kind of building...can't remember what it was. Maybe an inn or a house or something. It was on a hill. Anyway, there were trees in the area as it was rather forested. I'd trained a drake all the way back to this building and was standing around the back of it. The drake's line of non-passing was there, because I went a bit further and the drake stopped, and I think started to go back because I was out of its range. So I moved in a bit and it spat a fireball at me. I basically stood up against a tree and kept peeking out and firing an arrow vaguely in the drake's direction, then hopped back so that the fireball it had launched at me hit the tree instead. It took, erm, about an hour. Or maybe half an hour. Eventually I killed it, yay. Loads of exp but I don't think it dropped any loot. However, I think there were drake eggs or random treasures or something in the nests which were worth grabbing. I manage to kill all the drakes eventually - none of them took as long as that first one, though! In fact, I don't think I had to train any of the others back that far, 'cause I was strong enough to kill them much closer to the nests. I might've gone away and levelled up a bit and then come back, I can't remember now.

Dragons can drop the dragon fang(or was it dragon tooth?) cataal, which can then be sold to a shop, such as the handy apothecary in the nearby elven town, at least if it's open... and they will have an unlimited amount in stock from that point on.

Oh yeah, maybe that was it. I think the stuff in the nests was random items...can't remember whether they were any good. Or maybe it was eggs and random items. Or scales, or fangs, or something, lol.
Got Diablo III for my birthday so I'll probably be installing that tonight and giving it a go. My dad wants me to level up so I can help his characters who are stuck at various boss fights, lol.

Mostly it's eggs in the nests, but there are a couple of chests with random items in them.

I hope you have fun playing Diable III. Sounds like your dad had an ulterior motive in giving it to you though... :P

Lol well wasn't that ulterior, given that he'd already told me he wanted me to get it so I could help him ;). I said I wasn't hugely bothered about D3 and had no plans to get it in the near future, but that, you know, my BDay and Christmas are coming up...and there we go ;).
Tried to install it last night but it cancelled before it even got that far, saying my operating system didn't meet the minimum specs. Turns out I have to install Service Pack 1 and 2 for my Windows. SP1 took at least an hour. I won't be arsed to do SP2 to night as I'll be on a bit later, so that can wait till tomorrow. If D3 will let me install it after that, I'll have to spend another night patching it, 'cause apparently that takes an hour or so as well :P.
You never know, I might actually get around to playing it some time before the new year :P.

In my opinion, one has to catagorize rpgs into genres. DM being a dungeon crawler. Final Fantasys being a jrpg. Diablo being a hack and slash. Morrowind being a sandbox. D&D being a pen and paper.(well, used to be). Dungeon crawlers are still my favorite. DM and such,Wizardry 5,Dark Spire,Wizardy 8 & Wizardry Tale of the Forsaken Land.

I'll have to insert Undertale at the top of my favorites list now that I've played it. Toby Fox did an amazing job with that game with minimal help from other developers and a soundtrack that's the only video game soundtrack I've ever felt was worth buying.
