Drakensang

Post by Bit »

I currently use my new laptop to play older things that I couldn't before because of the needed hardware. Good thing is: you can get those game pretty cheap nowadays - doesn't make them worse.
So one game, that probably didn't get far out of Germany, but is really worth playing is that one:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drakensang:_The_Dark_Eye
(from 'Plot' just read the first two blocks, or the fun gets spoiled! - Continue with 'gameplay' then. And - it's not true that there isn't much magic - it's more than one can handle if you develop the right way...)
Can't say much about the sequels, but I'm glad that I got them now (not even finished part 1 yet).
I won't tell you much more than wiki says about it - but I really love it.
If you think you are fast enough, you can battle in realtime, but you can also pause and play it turn-based.
The story leads you (more or less pretty linear, but some quests stay for long) through several locations - most of them will be closed after finishing them, just not the important main three towns. Dialogues and options are often pretty surprising - and sometimes really lovely.
If you can get it - get it. And tell here if I'm right to recommend it, I bet Ameena will love it :)
The design comes straight from the most popular pen&paper rpg-system here - so, it's lot of story and NPC-communication and you urgently need to develop your communication skills too to get the right options. >100 quests - some easy, just run here, run there, but some pretty complex.

I might give it a go, I have been looking for a new rpg to play. I Googled it and read some reviews - seems like the kind of thing I would enjoy.

One worry is that the voice-acting is supposed to be awful. I don't know why, but bad voice acting really puts me off a game and breaks the immersion (it really, really bothered me in the witcher). I suppose I could play it in German with English subtitles.

About voice: The NPCs only 'talk' the first page when they speak. Those voices are pretty okay.
There is one thing that is a little bit annoying - if you walk (dungeon siege - destination mark style) with another than the main character, this character always repeats one of about five different (short) comments. Your main character is quiet.
It also may happen that one of the party gets stuck somewhere, or you are such close to the character that all that you can click just shows the character's name, but, selecting another character and usually a little movement of that partymember solves the situation.
If you can get it, take care that you get the gold edition with the highres-textures and the latest patches, but those are surely available online.
One important thing: I had problems with the fullscreen mode of part one. This can be edited in the ini-file by setting windowed instead. This is kind of fullscreen then.
After all - I did forgive all weaknesses for the good things.
Maybe watch some scenes of this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2J_7C_p_RSY
I played a female battlemage - a bit challenging because you really have carefully tp spent the points...

Didn't get a chance to play this in the end. Went to Game, but no copies available, and my broadband is really crap at the moment so downloading isn't an option.

Nonono, Drakensang is like ElderScrolls - full 3D. It is pretty similar!
