Nexus riddles with japanese text

Post by Lunever »

A couple of riddles are spread over other threads, couldn't find the one I'm looking for right now.

Might be a good thing to screenshot a couple of them anyway so anyone who knows some japanese and is willing to help can translate them.

After about two thirds of the first level after the Hall of Champions there is a hexagramm on the floor, a japanese inscription on the wall, and a pit behind it, on a corner of the floor.

Jumping into it, casting Zo, throwing stuff etc.. doesn't do any good.

I guess the inscription tells you to drop some specific item unto the hexagramm.

Does anyone know what?

A short way earlier there is a staff on a plate. Trying to the staff or to subsitute it versus some other item triggers a deadly trap (ceiling crushes party). So far I assume the staff cannot be taken.

I think that staff was some kind of Raiders of the Lost Ark "equal weight" puzzle. There are hints on the wall.

The top three kanji are "Nightmare" "Law" and "Harm/Hindrance." That doesn't form any compound word that I'm familiar with.

The phrase beneath translates to "If there is a thing that is placed, then, in exchange, the hole will plug up."

Thank you!

Well, after Gambit gave the equal weight hint, I tried again taking the above-mentioned staff and found, that you need to exchange it with a single item that has exactly the same weight. So I gave away the Mana+2 staff. Since the new staff was the most special looking object I dropped it on the Hexagramm and the pit closed. I guess the upper kanji refer to the staff and/or the trap it is secured with.

In the level that would be "Choose your door, choose your fate"-level in DM1 I got enough keys to proceed to the next level.

However, assuming that this is like DM1 and there is a still closed off secret area I could probably retrieve a couple of additional gold keys.

In 2 areas I walked through but didn't find a key. Probably I missed something.

One would be in place of the creature cavern. Found nothing but an empty hall with an antman and a club, and a room with an antman and an empty niche. Putting a club into the niche did nothing. Couldn't find any switch or similar.

Other part would be in place of time is of the essence. I found a dragon steak but no gold key. There is a spinner, dunno whether it means anything. Also there is a balcony with probably elven boots on an opposite balcony. Dunno how to get there though.

Any idea? Sure, I can just proceed to the next level, but I'd like to not miss anything.

Hmm, still don't find a way into the northeastern part of that level, and I would like to see it before proceeding to the next level.

Probably I'm missing something very obvious. There is a wall blocking off that part, probably I'd need to do something probably simple to get through.

Maybe the inscriptions give a clue. Sophia, do you understand them?

"Exit"
"Entrance"
"Ugly/Nasty things live here"

in that order :)

So the "Ugly things" would be the "Creature Cavern". I only found 2 antmen there though and nothing else, so I'm missing something there.

The Exit/Entrance would make sense in that those 2 parts seem to be interconnected. So you enter by one door and come back by the other. Still I don't know how to get to that opposite balcony or where to find a key.

I proceeded to the next level without getting into that northeastern part.

Found a scroll with kanji before an altar:

Why are your screenshots interlaced? You can surely fix that and get a solid visual.

Thanks for all translation help. So the coins go not on the altar but on the water behind the altar, gets me a shield and a rapier and another scroll.

Gambit: Err, everything in SSF-Nexus has this interlaced look here. I didn't know it wasn't supposed to. Does that mean if you start Nexus in SSF on your machine you don't get interlace? If so I might have to check the grafics configuration.

I can't run SSF, but I'm pretty sure there should be a better visual option? Christophe can confirm, he's tested it.

In SSF, open the Options dialog box. In the "Screen" tab, disable the "Scanline" option, and you'll get the "solid" display Gambit mentions.

No, that's not on the worm level (I wouldn't ask stuff that is the same as in DM1), its in some large cavern with antmen and vexirks.

Found a scroll nearby http://dmweb.free.fr/Stuff/DMNScreenshots/Scroll1.jpg and got attacked by a vexirk carrying a skeleton key http://dmweb.free.fr/Stuff/DMNScreenshots/Vexirk.jpg

If I got this right from a previous thread the riddle room is different form the DM1 riddle room in that it asks for a magnifier instead of a gold coin.

Since I got a gold key and an open door I guess that's done, but I upload the screenshots for verification anyway, since this is probably one of the few places in the game where you can't proceed without either understanding japanese or getting along with some half-knowledge from DM1.

Sophia, can you verify the riddles of the riddle room?

Right, I saw the thread here but didn't notice there are also screenshots up. Still, the older screenshots seem to be real photographs, I think using the snapshot function of SSF gets better images.

Found 3 wall portraits followed by a room with 3 levers.

Only noticeable lever combination I found so far is one that drops me into a pit with nothing but a teleporter back.

Funny that, I spotted those portraits in the images I extracted earlier with Christophe's new Nexus Extract tool, but I don't ever remember seeing them when I played it. Perhaps you found a secret room?

Eldest son Zerufuto:
We three siblings whose honesty everyone approved of.
... Those who believe my words, look at the back wall.

Second son Rudia:
My older brother Zerufuto is a liar and a bad person.
People who believe my words, please look thoroughly at the right wall.

Third son Gotton:
What Rudia said, you cannot put faith in, you know.
... If you think I'm correct, look at the back/remaining wall.

(Translation Note: In Gotton's phrase, they used a different word for 'back' than Zerufuto's, one that less unambiguously means "behind" and can also mean "remaining" or "the one after." So it may or may not refer to the same wall as Zerufuto.)

Thanks! Still dunno what to do with the 3 levers (probably they somehow open a wall to a nearby part of that level I didn't get into). Have to see whether the translation can help, but probably it'll get next week til I have time to do so (tomorrow I'll be busy with paper&pen D&D :-))

The wall portraits are in the sourtheastern corner of level 7, I dont think it's a secret room. But then, without some maps ripped directly from the program, either of us will probably miss a couple of things. I alread left several non-obligatory puzzles behind in order to proceed. Maybe if I play through a second time at another occasion I will try to solve every bit and make a screenshot collection of all kanji in the game (unless they get ripped from the program first of course).

So far I think it's a video game that is fun, but not much more.

Wallsets and monster outlook create a good atmoshere at a first glance. however, minor and major glitches inhibit the amtosphere.
The magic maps looks like it was meant for a space marine helmet HUD, the menu sounds like phone dialing, the lack of missile grafics makes shot arrows look really really stupid and so on. All minor stuff. A major disadvantage is the extremely dumb AI. Even a horde of zombies would cast these monsters out for stupidity. Most monsters come alone, often fail to perceive the party even at a short distance, cannot leave a very small area, turn very slowly and are so busy with injured-grafix that you can hit them so often that they die if you sneak up on them. So it takes dragons and fireball hurling golems to get something similar to a fight.

Still, so far I enjoy the experience, and I'm curious for the rest.

Yeah, I share your views about the gameplay issues.

The font is stored as one bitmap and the messages must be in text strings elsewhere, so for now you'd need to do it by screenshots.

Heh heh, even without knowing the Kanji, it was clear what the hungry men puzzled entailed, but by the time I had enough food items to try, I never went back and tried it. I'd love to know what secret is revealed when you do this...
