Return To Chaos (RTC) V0.01

Post by George Gilbert »

I've implemented many of the suggestions for RTC that have been made so far and a new binary is available at:

http://www.mrao.cam.ac.uk/~gg215/dm/RTC.html
To avoid clogging up this board with (slightly) off-topic stuff I've also created a public board for suggestions/bugs etc:
http://pub50.ezboard.com/breturntochaos
The major changes since the first release of the core engine are:
1. Drawing routine has been optimised making a massive difference to the frame rate (typically factor 5 improvement) and removing the problems of the mouse `sticking' that some people found.
2. Transparency has been added to the graphics engine for some objects such as mirrors, poison clouds, spell explosions and some monsters (faders, ghosts, water and fire elementals). If you don't like it and prefer it the way DM worked you can turn it off in the Init.txt file.
3. Movement rate is now tied to the rest of the engine so that your maximum movement rate is the same as that of flying objects (as in DM) and is reduced when carrying heavy loads.
4. Monster AI has been altered to make them less agressive and behave in a way more similar to DM.
The purpose of this release is to get a final definitive version of the main engine. After that has been achieved then I can define a save-game format, implement it and start work on a level editor...

RTC looks amazingly. Just a question. I'm a "Linux User" - will there be any support for this OS (or better for any *nix OS)? I believe that only this solution would mean that both these great adventures will live "for ever".

He is up to version .004 and it is looking very sweet, check it out at http://www.mrao.cam.ac.uk/~gg215/dm/RTC.html and post any messages to the message board linked there.
