CSBwin files sharing structure

Post by Paul Stevens »

Topic split from here - b.
CSBWin is a bit awkward for inexperienced players to install and run
I should never have broken down and allowed
those fancy options. It was and is very simple. You put the
files into a folder and double-click CSBwin.

We added complicated methods to use less file space.
Now nobody can figure out the simple method because
the optional method gets in their way.

I think I will tear out all that business of allowing
graphics files, etc. sharing. Makes the code a lot
simpler, too. Then the instructions will be:

1 ) Unpack the files into a single directory.
2 ) Run CSBwin.

No, please, I think the sharing is ok. Even with sharing all would be fine if CSBWin just allowed more than 1 dungeon.dat file (like dungeon1.dat, dungeon2.dat etc...) and had a starting menu asking which dungeon to load. Then it would be perfect!

Thinking about it: Leave it be dungeon.dat files in separate folders with separate grafic.dat files and so on, just have CSBWin have a startup menu which folder to use, that'd be best.

Uh, and maybe, err, you can make the CSBWin downloads page a bit more ... structured. It's a bit hard to get what files are meant for what purpose. Maybe a couple of comment lines would already do it.

I'm with Paul. In the "old days", CSBWin dungeons were just a dungeon.dat file, so having a shared copy of the exe, graphics etc. and BAT files to run each dungeon made sense. Not so anymore - each dungeon shipping as a complete package to be unpacked into its own directory is the way to go. Simple and safe, and who cares about the odd meg of disk space these days?

CSBWin downloads page a bit more ... structured
Have you looked at:

http://www.dianneandpaul.net/CSBwin/Games/

That was intended for beginners.

I wrote some rather angry-sounding words where you
now see the emoticon. But I took them back. I do
offer to give access to my website to anyone who
thinks they have the time and skills to maintain a
nicer CSBwin/CSBuild webpage.

Sorry, but I would really prefer it to stay without
menu at startup. (you cannot reload ingame, all files would
have the same name, it would get messy and what is the
sense, I want to play one dungeon.dat.
If I want to switch to a custom dungeon or want to play the
original csb once more , I copy and paste dungeon.dat and or
graphics.dat files from their respective folders(backup) into my
Play-testFolder where I overwrite (paste)
(because I got backups of everything I need) I know, this is redundancy.

Testing, (for me that requires often quick reloads) would be
horrible. I really would hate to have to click through menus
(double click maybe even) to load the one dungeon I want to
use and having to choose from one possibility.
Please tell me what would be the point in having a menu? )
---------------------------------------------------
edit: this is basically all what des posted earlier,
which I did not realise until now ;)
I checked some download links and came up with the following:

http://www.dianneandpaul.net/CSBwin/

look at the date, and this file is up to date:
CSBwin-CSBuild.zip ... 2006-07-05 (y-m-d).

contains .exe version 9.955 and dm graphic.dat , but the
dungeon.dat is kind of a demonstration for a party movement restriction filter or sth. but not a dm original dungeon.dat/

So, only need dungeon.dat and maybe another graphics.dat
(if you prefer to play csb with csb graphics.dat)
this is possibly something the downloader isn't fully aware of

Basically you find that in the /games folder
there you should look

http://www.dianneandpaul.net/CSBwin/Games/

dm original:
.exe version 9.6 plus 14 (dungeon master graphics.dat)
csb original:
.exe version 9.6 plus 14 (csb graphics.dat)

I wonder if version 9.6 plus 14 has the poison shooter bug , like
the version I downloaded ? If so, it should maybe replaced with
a better newer version.

Does not matter , we now replace .exe files and you have two folders containing
all the files necessary for playing original dm or csb!

THis can be easily done on one's own, but
if you play the game, and do not know about the poison shooter bug,
how can you know? read the news of csbuild and csbwin/lin on the forum :)

So , all in all it is ok. It is work in progress , so ultimately
not that superfast to find for newbies but basically you need
only CSBwin-CSBuild.zip and forget about all other files!
then switch to .. /games , get both dm.zip and csb.zip. That
would be ok. If you want to use dmextract, etc. you have to
fight your way through the forum . That is another story but
it is doable!

If the version 9.6 plus 14 is all right(probably)
you do not need very much else than /games and the one you
like. You could argue that the games folder is not big enough,
maybe /GAMES uppercase would be more eye popping .
JUST read Paul Stevens post:
that is maybe the prob that people do not know of the
/games folder or they miss it!(I missed to look at the date,
so who knows what the brain does for others while searching??)
Maybe modify the quicklinks description and add
csbwin/lin games ?.

The encyclopedia has 9.8 executable of csbwin ;
custom dungeons were:
3d2d1d, 3dmaze and prison of dragoth

I did not find the normal csb / dm dungeons however .
(so ChristopheF's website is more or less up to date, but incomplete concerning custom dungeons or I am too blindfolded to find them ? )

Paul: Sorry, it was not my intention to make you angry, if I've done so, I apologize.

To be honest, I was not aware of the site you posted above. I got to your file list site only, because that is pointed at in the DOWNLOAD-CSBWIN-sticky-thread. Maybe most of all confusion can be simply removed if you'd edit that first and most visible post by adding the site you posted above, and maybe the download mirror at the Encyclopaedia. The site you're pointing at above seems quite ok to me, so my mistake not immediately finding it, but then it'd be good to point other people directly there.

The idea with the startup menu was just because I think that is really working fine for RTC, and since you repeatedly mentioned that you are not happy with the current file structure I thought it might be a gain for CSBWin. It is just a mere suggestions, NOT a complaint (who am I to complain about a great programm given for free), and, like all suggestions, it is of course entirely up to the programmer to decide whether it'd be a good thing to do or not.

I updated the sticky topic to point first
to the 'Games' page where complete and
easy-to-use packages are available. I also
changed the prose to indicate that the main
page is for experts.

I know I have promised better things for managing custom dungeons for a very long time. I made some tests last week about this feature and I hope to have the final structure in place on my web site by the end of summer so we will be able to put all dungeons there where users will be able to find dungeons in a simple way. Users will then be able to register an account, and registered users will be able to post new dungeons and dungeon reviews.

For CSBwin dungeons, we will put there archives containing all the required files (however, for some dungeons we may not know which is the best version of the engine to ship).

If the author is not around to advise us then
it is very likely that the most recent version
of CSBwin will do very nicely.

The most recent version has to maintain compatibility
with the oldest dungeons, namely CSBwin and DM,
and therefore has pretty good backward compatibility.
I am happy to receive reports to the contrary.
