Is it possible to use the updated CSB portraits in CSBWin?

Post by Stitch »

Hey everyone,

I'm about to launch into a CSB playthrough attempt and plan on importing my party that beat DM, and I'd like to updated character portraits that came with CSB. I don't need the ability to edit anything, but I wouldn't mind staring at a different graphic of Zed and company for the duration of CSB.

I know CSBWin doesn't port the portrait editor as it has understandably been deemed not mandatory, but I can't help but wonder if it is possible to import these updated portraits, perhaps via CSBuild..

Clearly this is not an issue of utmost importance, but I thought I'd ask!

As far as I'm aware, it's not possible in the newest versions of CSBWin. Back in the dim and distant past, I think it was possible using other tools, but those other tools can now no longer read the newer save game format of CSBWin.

Of course, I could be wrong, and other members more savvy with CSBWin will undoubtedly offer better advice.

Yeah, sadly the only editor that can currently edit portraits in DMute that works on PC DM games. If you had a PC DM game, you could actually convert the portraits, then convert the save afterwards, then load in CSBwin. Unfortunately, it won't work with a CSBwin DM game :(

CSBuild has an 'Export Portraits' and 'Import Portraits'
option in the Edit menu. The big problem is dealing
with the palette that is provided. But it is not at
all impossible,

Aah, right, I did not realise this! Nice. Is that a new addition Paul? I've not played with CSBWin for a few years.

Ha! No, I mean, was the import/export portrait feature there from CSBWin Day 1, or it came in a later version? I honestly don't remember.

Certainly not 'Day 1'. But it has been there for several years.

(I don't know how it works and I had to fire up CSBuild
to see if it was actually there! I honestly did not remember
if it was an official part of CSBuild or if it was just there
for a few days for some special purpose.)

It seems from this that it can be done, however I'm not sure what I would need to import.

I fancy doing another run and doing it from DM all the way through to CSB with the same characters so it would be nice to have the updated portraits for them.
