[April Fool's] New Mechanics for DSB

Post by Sophia »

Over the years, I've tried pretty hard to figure out the internals of the DM engine and port them to DSB. I generally like to think I've done a pretty good job, but I've made a lot of mistakes, and think there are still things that DSB gets very wrong relative to how they're done in DM. I've decided that rather than taking a long slog through the CSBwin code once again, I'm just not even going to try to copy DM any more. As has been observed, DM clones are primarily written to "scratch an itch," and my current itch is to develop some new mechanics that will hopefully feel something like DM but also add new dimensions to it.

The new DSB mechanics, included in the next version, will support the following features:

 The skill system will be expanded from the simple Fighter/Ninja/Priest/Wizard divide into a full-blown skill system with dozens of subskills to level up.
 Characters will have the chance of critical fumbles when swinging their weapons, leading to humorous and deadly consequences.
 In addition to "Food" and "Water", a new graph will be added tracking characters' needs to go to the bathroom, for even more realism.
 Attack methods will be expanded into sophisticated combat maneuvers that can be accomplished by winning quick Warioware style minigames.
 Male and female characters will be distinct in-game, with males being physically stronger and females being better at everything else.
 For a real oldschool RPG feel, all random number generation will be done using only values that can be generated by polyhedral dice, and the game can optionally show a graphic of them rolling.

Spoiler
;-) I love that you're consistent; anually.
For #3, the "Needs WeeWee" gauge, I assume you'll have supporting dungeon mechanics for creating a fully flushing latrine? Or do we just use a pit, a "hole in the ground", for a more realistic approach?

I'm not sure that #5 is accurate: have you ever met me for real? My muscles are like baby carrots (although you can't say the same for my own baby carrot, er, cough.....) And my girlfriend can beat me in an arm wrestle.

Can monsters be made to reflect upon their actions to create a richer and more diverse moral landscape within the dungeon? This would be more realistic, maybe with moral landscape tiles in ESB.

That one made me laugh :)

(Also, if carried out it would be a very brave move: I have never played an RPG (computer or not) that differentiated between sexes).

What about the massive AC bonus female character must get the less they wear to compensate for the lack of armour? :D

What can I say, the start of spring (specifically, the beginning of April) always seems to awaken me, and motivate me to make some big improvements to DSB.

And yet you seem to cave to some unknwon pressure and end up doing all the more mundane updates elsewhere.

I want my morally complex monsters, minigames and pee-bars! :D
