RAR?

Post by MasterWuuf »

I keep getting a notice about RAR not being a freebie.

How much does this cost?

Is it a necessary purchase, to be able to continue installing
more of the games available through you guys? :?:

I can't answer directly. I stopped using RAR quite awhile ago for (Open Source) 7-Zip, which support zip,rar,gz,bz2,zip as well as the native 7z...which is generally better than the others.

Thanks for the fast response, guys. I'll probably try to download something in the next few days, just to see if I can figure out how to use it.

You don't have to have to pay for winrar or winzip to keep using it, just has an annoying popup.

I never actually open WinRAR 'cause of the thing when I downloaded which says that it's only a 30-day trial or something, but I don't have to open it 'cause I can do all I want just by right-clicking on the file I want to zip/unzip and select from that menu. I like WinRAR (not that I use it that often) :).

Broken_Paladin is right - WinRAR is just nagware that keeps pestering you to pay for it, even though you can use it indefinitely. They keep shoving the pop-up in your face in the hope that someone will pay for it.

Thanks for the information. I won't complain about it.
After all, I've been able to play 'original' DM and C3, thanks to them. 8)

Recently I installed a newer winrar version than the one I had installed ages ago, and to my surprise this made at least for now the pestering message go away, seems that a resinstall resets the counter. But aside from reminding you to buy the functionality is fully retained.
A long while ago I even did by a sinlge user license for winrar, but I can't remember anymore how much its was, after one or another reinstall I couldn't find where I had my license data stored anyway.

Then again, since you are getting a product that they want you to pay for for free, i don't see why we should resent the nagging! Otyher companies would just have it be utterly disabled and darn you to heck!

Thanks for the 7-zip tip, will check it out since i just go with winrar usually

Agree with Beowulf.
You'll pay hundreds of quid for a PC then rant and rave if someone wants a few pounds to use their software

Why even care/bother, when there is software that is better and free?

(In this case, 7zip) :)

I'm not that familiar with zip/unzip programs.

Does 7zip zip/unzip RAR stuff? :?:

Wouldn't that be called unrar stuff rather than unzipping it? ;-)

Ahh, so that wasn't a subtle reference to the action of "unzipping" being one that shortly precedes an action which someone such as yourself might perceive as "fun"? ;)
