Happy New Year!

Post by beowuuf »

2012 so close now, time to grab a drink, settle down, and look to the new year in a few hours.

Happy new year all!
Was unable to (permenantly) kill off ian_scho (Haynuus), Ameena, oh_brother (Westian), money (Falkor), raixel (Petal) and Lord_Bones (Aurek) in the DM D&D game Time's Champions!

Yeah. The New Year's here. It's started. :|

Image

And I've been informed that our department has the "pleasure" to organise the "Geographical Olympics" (for basic and high school students) in the Czech Republic for next five years. :| And I've got the "pleasure" to be in the organising team. Boy, I'm a "lucky" man. :| It means hundreds of hours per year spent on futile bureaucracy, administration, paper work and communication with civil servants who either don't know anything about the subject, or don't give a damn, or (usually) both. :|

Image

Boss: Got some splendid news.
Me: Indeed, professor?
Boss: I have a new job.
Me: The department will be awfully sorry to lose you, sir.
Boss: No, I mean an extra job. I've been asked to organise the Geographical Olympics.
Me: I see. And what was the good news?
Boss: That WAS the good news.
Me: Oh. Then how, if I may be so bold as to enquire, would you describe bad news?
Boss: What?
Me: Do you realise what this job would mean if you accept it?
Boss: I have accepted it.
Me: You've what?
Boss: I HAVE accepted it.
Me: Professor, you're not serious!
Boss: Yes, it's an honour. We need Geographical Olympics.
Me: If by "we" you mean the Czech Republic, that's perfectly true. But if by "we" you mean you and me and this department, we need Geographical Olympics like an aperture in the cranial cavity! It's a bed of nails!
Boss: You may be right, Jan. But if I succeed, this could be my Falkland Islands!
Me: Yes. And you could be general Leopoldo Galtieri!

I'm a bit late, but had to work.
A good new year to everyone, hope we'll have some fine moments together.
Kind of too much silence here the last time.

I know you were joking, Wuufy! But I was just named into the "Central Committee" of the Czech Geographic Olympics. :|

Oh, dear. I've always "wanted" to be in a Central Committee of something. Of anything. :|

The last "Central Committee" I've heard of was that of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia. :|

I never wanted to be a new Leopoldo Galtieri! I... I... I always wanted to be a lumberjack! Leaping from tree to tree as they float down the mighty rivers of British Columbia! The Larch! The Pine! The Giant Redwood tree! The Sequoia! :|

Happy 2017 everyone!

Just reading further up the thread. Jan... Do you finally get to dissolve your Olympic responsibilities this year?
Loved the Hacker/Appleby bit by the way.

Yeah, I got rid of it already. I have to confess though the Olympics really were my Falkland Islands...

In a good way? ;-)

And so it came to pass that the scourge of 2016 terminated in a cloud of uncertainty and... scourge. The people cheered and ran through the streets. "2017 will fix everything!" they exclaimed. The egg nog and prosecco clouded their judgement of course...

Happy New Year everyone. While I'd like to be optimistic for this coming year, I have a bad feeling about all this....! :?

Happy New Year everyone! :D

It does seems unlikely that 2017 will make everything ok. Then again, someone pointed out that 2017 it is the first prime number for the past 6 years, so it could prove less divisive.

But were you Galtieri?

I had my "2017 will fix everything" spiel yesterday from my youngest daughter.
Ah... To be young and Idealistic!
Maybe it's age or experience (probably both) that has hardened my scepticism... Would be nice if she was right though.

Bah, humbug!

I hate New Year's Day. It takes me a long time to stop saying the previous year (MMXVII in this case). It takes effort to stop saying "2017".
