RTC tutorials

I've come to notice that I've started getting a few tutorials about RTC dungeon editing, and I thought that I'd post a list of my current tutorials (to be updated when I create a new one). These tutorials have been created on member request, and are just a simple outline of the topic at hand.

They're not full blown "copy & paste" setups, they just show the basics and leave the rest up to the designer.
If your internet browser actually opens the TXT file (instead of downloading it)... come back to this page, right-click on the link, and chose 'Save Target As'.

Added March 2010:
Chasm.txt - cross a "chasm" of pits by throwing over a grappling hook.
DM2 weather.txt - how the DM2 weather system was built
Door smasher.txt - break a given door with a given object
Multiple pressure plates.txt - place set number of coins on correct floor-plates to open a door
Poisoned fountain.txt - poisonous water from fountain
Rotating teleporter.txt - teleporter that rotates with a switch

Added March 2011:
Damage without item.txt - damage party if they aren't carrying a certain item
Item in alcove.txt - demonstrates basic alcove mechanics... in order to place flooritems on a wall, create the flooritem on a blank floor tile and copy/paste it onto the desired wall (the fake walls are so that no warnings come up on RTC startup)
Unlockable chests - only a certain key can open a certain chest, also shows each chest having a different "failure" message, and a different opening sound effect
Switches.txt - shows how to do certain tricks with switches

Variable Lockpicking - demonstrates lockpicking based on Ninja level

excellent idea, this could be the ticket to seeing many more new dungeons from those new with RTC, showing a few tricks is exactly the right idea.

I've made this thread a more general "RTC Tutorials", not just for Lord Bones stuff. It makes sense to have a sticky where people can download all the TXT file examples that have been posted on the forum. If you have a TXT file you'd like to share, let me know, and I'll add it to the top post of this thread, as well as the Wiki.

I may use it, but Mediafire drives me mad... I can only imagine what the dungeon designers who are trying to get them must be going through. Thanx.

Thanks for all these tutorials. I really could have used them when I first started making a dungeon, which ended up being a years long project trying to get things working the way I want them by trial and error, with emphasis on the error.

You're in the same position that I think all of us were: no documentation for RTC and we had to learn by trial and error. It can be incredibly time consuming, as you've discovered, but also very rewarding too.

If you're doing complex stuff, you might consider switching to DSB as it's ultimately much more flexible than RTC, and can be programmed more directly using Lua scripting language. Also consider that RTC is no longer developed or supported, so if you run into any bugs with the RTC engine (and there are a few), they won't get fixed. DSB on the other hand is still in active development.

Sadly, the documentation seems to be the area where many indie projects fail in. Which is a shame as RTC is a good engine and when you finally know what you are doing you can do a lot of amazing things with it.
