Rolled a 20 on the listen and 12 on the spot for the source of the smell. Do you want a nature to identify it?

Ssssil was happy the other two seemed to be getting along alright, though there was a slight twinge of jealousy to see the bika learning from Nilss. Observing that Growlgra seemed to be leaking, Ssssil surmised it must be a mammal thing. Did they need to keep the fluids in, or replace them with more fluids? Both seemed equally bad.

Ssssil grabbed a waterskin and his extra bandages, and gestured to Growlgra's sweat, and then indicated his two hands one at a time. Which you need?

Ssssil was happy his other small friend was happy, though it took him a moment to realise Grolwgra's identity from Hissssa's own perspective. Ssssil imagined Urrffrah in her normal wolf, to Ssssil form, sitting on her hanches with her head turned quizzically, looking to Hissssa. Ssssil imagined Hissssa had a tiny erloss skeleton that Urrffrah was looking at, with Hissssa able to push it towards Urrffrah if possible.

Lol, Ssssil is just checking Hisssa still likes our Barghast friend, despite all her odd changing and running off :)

At the mention of the scent, Ssssil tries t oscent the air, and looks to Hissssa aswell. Ssssil imagiens all sorts of nastu dead and rotting items, wondering if his small friend can identify it.

Sorry for stupidly long delay. Had an old friend suddenly show up in Seattle and get ahold of me, so we hung out all weekend. And no, the smell is obvious.

Growlgra blinks at the trackers proffered bandages, but happily takes the waterskin and takes a long drink. Hisssa scents the water coming out of Growlgra and seems confused, sending Sssil a mental image of the green iridescent beetle back-carapace salt dishes noble lizar use at their banquet tables.

The bika hands the waterskin back and looks around. He wrinkles his nose and points into the swamp, a ways ahead and a bit off the path.Smell that way. Sssil sniffs the air and although his sense of smell is nowhere as good as Growlgra's, he distinctly smells the pungent odor of carrion. But looking at the RA orb and from where they are in the swamp, they are still a bit too far southeast of the place for the scent to be coming from where they found Thessan.

The tracker listens carefully and cloes by hears the yapping and snarling of a pack of swamp jackals communicating with each other, in the same direction as the carrion scent. There is no other sounds but the normal swamp-life going about their day, but just as he is about to quit actively listening, to the northwest he hears a lasstiir scream its territorial challenge repeatedly. That is followed by a low growl, of something that could only be Urrffrah. The screaming continues, and so does the barghest's answering snarls and growls. Based on where the sounds are coming from, it seems the barghest has found the spot where Thssan was. But apparantly a lasstiir has taken offense to the barghest entering its hunting area. Growlgra's ears are pricked, although he doesn't seem to be hearing Urrffrah. The bika opens hi smouth wide, as if he is yelling, and points to the NorthwestSomething make lot noise, there.

Hisssa seems confused, as if the viper isn''t sure what to make of the strange hunter. He sends Sssil a mental image of the erloss skeleton turning into a real erloss and Urrffrah eating it. Then a swamp deer, which the barghest also eats, then a sssaros, which is also devoured, followed by a feeling of worry. Leave it to Hisssa to be concerned with Urrffrah eating everything!

Hisssa's tongue flicks in and out as he weaves back and forth in the direction of the carrion scent. In Sssil's mind, a swamp jackal pack burying a carrion cache appears. The viper doesn't seem overly concerned. Sssil knows that swamp jackals will gather bits of carrion and bury them under a layer of dirt before urinating on the pile to warn off other scavengers.

Nihss holds up a hand for everyone to stop. "Your beast's tracks be leaving the path here. They be going toward that death-smell. It probably be a swamp jackal cache. Maybe your beast be getting hungry?" But I also be hearing an angry lasstiir, be from the same direction where the merchant be dead. Don't know what it be mad at though. Maybe your beast be getting that far? Hope it be wise enough to not be trying to fight an angry lasstiir."

So, due to your 20, you were able to tell exactly what the lasstiir was mad at. If you want any more info on lasstiir besides what would be considered "common knowledge" (the stuff in the glossary) you can roll a know nature

Urrfrah can see the glittering eyes of the strange beast as it peers at her as she crouches in the wood-hole-place. Suddenly a hairless paw tipped with 3 inch razor sharp claws swipes at her through the opening, although she easily jumps back and avoids it. Fortunately due to the fact that the creature is nearly the same size as her, it can't bring both its forepaws to bear against her, nor can it really look at her as it attacks, although she would have the same issue unless she wanted to give up the protection of the hollow she is in.

K, so like I said before, Due to the fact that the hollow is just barely bigger than you, it is really hard for both of you to see what you are doing when you attack. So you have both cover and concealment, and it has concealment.

Urrffrah growls again at the irritating creature, snapping at it as it again swipes at her. She wishes that the others would hurry up - then she could come out and they'd outnumber this thing. And then she could eat it. And then, finally, get on with searching for signs of whatever put the slime-lump into Thessan and ripped up the other lizar.
As best she can, she gives another howl. Hurry up, slow creatures!

Urrffrah will just bide her time until Sssil and co. arrive. Do I need to make any rolls to fend off/bite at the attacks of the baboon thingy?

Sounds cool! I walked around a loyt this weekend! And got rained on sometimes :)

Ssssil is confused about the salt smell from Growlgra himself, and imagines Grolwgra rolling around in a large mound of salt in order to grnd off all the dirt and muck from travel. Ssssil then imagines Growlgra as a giant salt encrusted fuzzball, and wonders if he's got it right.

Ssssil is happy that the water seems to help, though does this mean they will need to keep an eye on their water more than Ssssil normally would? Is there some way to...recycle? The lizar decides to forego figuring out the hand signals for such a concept, and keeps moving on.

To Hissssa's concern, Ssssil imagines the group eating the meat off of a variety of creatures, and then Urrffrah coming along at the end and eating all the things the group wouldn't eat. And he makes sure he imagines Urrffrah stopping and sniffing a pile of offal a moment before Hissssa jumps out. After all, he is sure Urrffrah would do that, right? Then, Sssssil imagines a gigantic predatory then jumping out at the group, Urrffrah's jaw unhinging, and the wolf creature eating the predator whole. And then spitting oput some meat gfor the rest to eat, and then burbing up some offal for Hisssa to play in - right before Westian walks passed..

lol, poor Hissssa, always concerned with Urrffrah's appetite!

Ssssil pauses at the various noises, as his ears home in on what it is. He looks to Nilss, nodding. "It Urrffrah. I can hear her growl, responding to lasstiir. She there." Ssssil then gestures with a grin to Grolwgra, pointing the way Urrfrah is and trying to mimic Urrffrah through the three stages of her transformation. She that way! He turns back to Nilss. "Let's hurry. While still some lasstiir to eat!" He then pauses a moment. "And I suppose watch out for jackals. Tell Growlgra!" With that, Ssssil puts his hands to his heathed weapons and starts moving towards the sounds.

We're coming Ameena! In a 'we're probably screwed' kinda way :D
Knowledge (nature) roll only a 13.

Well if you guys choose not to interact with the jackals, I'm gonna fast-forward you to where Urrffrah is, as it really is only a half-hour trek from your current position, cuz it really isn't fair to Ameena, due to the fact there is a very low chance either Urrffrah or the beast manages to actually hit each other.

In response to Sssil's request, Nihss gets Growlgra's attention, then gets down on all fours in front of Growlgra, and pretends to be some kind of predatory beast snarling and snapping at the bika, then stands and points towards the swamp-jackal sounds. The bika nods, and makes a circling motion with his index finger. Lets avoid them.

After a brief conference with Sssil about the direction the noises are coming from, Nihss looks at the surrounding foliage and the RA orb in the sky, and leaves the path to break a trail heading straight for where the lastiir sounds appear to be.

The three trackers quickly move off the path and into the deep swamp. Sssil knows lasstiir are powerful tree-dwelling predators, although usually quite shy around lizar and other sentient Zaangaardians. Although they are not as intelligent as a Zaangaardian, they have a natural animal cunning and generally unless starving or wounded realize that sentient prey is much too powerful to bother attacking. They are adept climbers and jumpers, where their prehensile tails, grey green hide, and retractable claws allows them to perch up in the trees, nearly invisible in the swamp canopy where they spend most of their lives, only coming down to drink and find a mate. They typically lair in trees over game trails and will spend hours crouched motionless on a branch overhanging the trail, waiting for prey to pass underneath so they can leap down upon it and use their claws and great size to bear it to the ground where they can deliver a killing blow to the spine before using their strong jaws to carry the prey back up to their tree-lair.

Although they generally ignore sentients, they are quite territorial and will try and drive out any other predatory animal species from the areas they hunt. A male and female usually share a territory, although they hunt and live alone unless raising kits. Their calls reminds Sssil of the one time he saw a human female fall out of the back of a wagon in Makan, and the woman made a high pitched piercing sound. Perhaps they are related to humanoids somehow, as although their hairless bodies look like the spot-cats that hunt in the drier swamplands, their faces are strangely flat and humanoid looking, albeit a humanoid with huge sharp fangs and the yellow slitted eyes of a cat or viper.

So it was high enough to get basically a more in depth version of the stuff in the glossary, but no advanced knowledge.

Fortunately, Nihss' path-maker comes in handy as the three leave the game trail and slog their way through the undergrowth. The swamp lizar is able to cut the worst of the overgrowth back, so the three make good time, although Growlgra still appears to be dripping water from his hands and feet, as well as having his mouth open and showing his tongue for some reason. The loss of water doesn't appear to affect him at all, although he takes a thin leather strip out of his belt pouch and wraps it around where he his holding his knife-spear as they move through the swamp.

The walk through the swamp is peaceful, and if it wasn't for the occasional lastiir screams and barghest snarls in the distance, Sssil could be enjoying himself. Time passes, and the RA orb tracks itself a claw length across the sky as the three move along. Hisssa seems chatty, and hisses in amusement at the image. He seems to think if the barghest wants to scare Westian, she is alright in the snake's mind. Suddenly, Sssil hears a low buzzing in the distance, of many flies.

Nihss, out in front breaking the trail raises a hand for silence and motions for the other two to come up silently to where he is standing. The young hunter parts the branches directly in front of him and points straight ahead. Sssil can see the tiny game trail leading toward where the maerchant's body was found in front of him about 10 feet. The tree Thessan was against is to the left down the path a ways, the smear of congealing blood and gore that is running down the ree to pool on the ground attracting a cloud of iridescent blue-black flies that cause the low hum Sssil heard as they flock to the food-source.

The tracker isnt sure what Nihss is pointing at until he sees a large male lasstiir move on the other side of the path. It appears to be pacing back and forth in front of an ancient downed tree covered in moss and shrubs, lain still for so long that it has slowly become part of the swamp floor. The beast prowls back and forth near the end of the tree, occasionally lowering its head as if it is peering at the place where it broke or raising a paw to swat at the wood. Sssil isnt sure why until a deep rumbling growl exactly like the one he heard earlier rolls out from...inside the downed tree? A few seconds later, a howl rings out, also from inside the downed tree, agitating the lasstiir and causing it to stand in an attack position, attention riveted on the tree.

]Urrffrah growls at the persistant beast and snaps at the seeking paw that enters her hollow. The creature quickly pulls the paw back and peers at her again. She can see its greenish-yellow eyes glittering in the late afternoon light as it tries to find a way to get to her without risking itself. Eventually, it starts to pace in a tight line directly in front of the opening while keeping one eye on her. When she howls, it stops pacing and stares right at her. It is no longer making that loud scream. It just watches her silently, muscles tensed.

Well here comes the calvary. Ameena, you can roll a spot to see if you can smell that Sssil and co. finally found their way to you.

Woohoo! Time to go scare a big thingie or get trounced in the process!

Ssssil is amused that Nilss actually managed to communicate to Grolgra so effectively. Combined with the lizar's swamp knowledge, perhaps there is some use in the swamp lizar after all. Which, of course, makes Ssssil anxious about his own usefulness. Then again, he heard Urrffrah's call. He takes comfort in that, and then allows Nilss to lead them around the swmap jackals.

Ssssil tries to avoid imagining another worm breaking out of the undergrowth, so that he doens't pass the image on to Hissssa. OF cours,e before long he manages to lose himself in the far more important task of looking around for the other half of the possible lasstiir pairing. At least if they are avoiding the jackals, they are avoiding the game trail they were following too. For now...

Once they arrive back at the previous place, Ssssil shudders. The association with Thesssan's attack and the death there suddenly makes Ssssil afraid and sad. He wonders how the caravan is, and wonders if he made the right choices...

Still, no time for that now. For some reason Urrffrah seems to have turned in to a tree. Ssssil then realises that trees cannot roar, and his slow mind makes sense of the situation. He makes a motion to Nilss and Growlgra, or a roaring mouth, and then makes an opening with his other hand. Stuck in tree! He points to Nilss, and makes a motion of pulling on the roaring mouth. Pull her out! He then makes a motion to Grolwgra and himself, pointing to the lasstiir, and then makes some exaggerated but quiet motions while rolling his eyes. Scare it off!

Ssssil grabs his sword and throwing axe, ready to run out and bang them together. He looks to the others to see if they understand and agree.

No other reason Urrffrah would be in a treee and not eating the lasstiir unless she was stuck, right? :D

Spot check to notice the others = 12 (5+7). If I'd rolled, like, an 18 or something, I'd've taken that as good enough to definitely notice the others. But as a 12 is middling, I'll wait to see whether or not Urrffrah actually realises the others have finally turned up :D.

LOL "Urrfrah turned into a tree!"

Nihss and GRowlgra both nod. Growlgra quickly unties his greenstone knife from the end of his spear before pulling the two pieces of wood that make the shaft apart and putting them back in his pack. He reaches down to his belt and unhooks his bola, before miming throwing it at the angry lasstiir, then does some odd trick where he puffs his fur up, making himself look a little bit bigger than he naturally is. I throw if not scare! Nihss nods and gets his pathmaker ready in case the lasstiir decides it doesn't want to be scared off.

Alright, so I assume you are going to rush out and try and intimidate it into going away. So, narrate what you are going to do and then roll an intimidate, with a +4 for both Nihss and Growlgra aiding you in looking like a scary pack of something you wouldt want to mess with.

Inside the tree, Urrffrah has a nice view of the lasstiir staring at her. The creature has an odd musty scent, and she can alos smell the scent of the rotten wood and the acidic scent of the many small black busy crawlers which have turned this log into their home. There are thousands of the little things, and they tickle as they swarm around, obviously agitated by the barghest's entry into their little world. Some of them are crwaling over her paws and up her legs. They are much too small to do anything to her, although the tickling could get annoying if it went on. The scent of the creature and wood overwhelms anything else she could possibly smell, although maybe she smells something canine somewhere nearby, its really hard to tell. There is nothing of the scent she has learned to associate with the lizar-beings, though.

So, yeah, theres ants in here. However they are the tiny little black kind that doesnt bite. But they are crawling aound UUrrffrah, although there is no mechanical effect. When Beo posts Sssil's action, you are welcome to respond to that before I do, though.

Well she can change in to a goblin, which is no use in a swamp, so you'd think a tree is logical for a 'swamp creature' :D

Sssssil nods and grinslike Westian, and then quickly arranges himself and the other two. He keeps Growlgra in the centre, as a small 'body' who can probably growl and snarl in a way predators hate. And he has himself on the left and Nilss on the right as the spikey 'arms' that should appear tall and imposing. With a nod, and a slow count as he holds up three fingers and slowly removes then, he then rushes out.

Ssssil himself hisses and yells out Urrffrah's name as well as he can, while smashing his axe and sword together.

Aww, it's a great plan, but I guess there was the whole 'wait, do we go on three, or is it three then go?' thing, because I rolled a 4 overall! (2-2+4)

She said she was on early days, so it would probably be the weekend - though she was probably waiting for the spot result too, so if she can retcon a reaction an update would be cool. Ssssil has Urrffrah-trees to save!

Yeah, sorry, been very busy this week, having to get up at about 7am to get into work for 9am, omg :P. Then not having much time in the evenings due to being rather busy then too this week. So I've not done too much of anything, Internet-wise. Yesterday by the time I got home from club it was about quarter past eleven. I checked my e-mail and this forum, then decided I was too knackered to check anything else so just went to bed. Anyway...if Urrffrah hasn't detected anything further (presumably those ants and the smells of the tree are getting in the way), there's no reason for her to change her current behaviour. Once she hears the yelling and stuff, and depending on what the baboon thingy does, then she'll have something new to react to ;).

As Sssil drops the third finger both Growlgra and Nihss charge out towards the lasstiir and the Urrffrah-tree, Growlgra snarling and growling, and Nihss waving his pathmaker as if it is a large claw. Growlgra's snarls are surprisingly menacing from such a small creature. Added to the clanging and smashing of Sssil's sword and shield and his shouting of Urrffrah's name, the three set up an unholy racket that causes a cloud of birds to take off from the trees around them and the lasstiir to whip around and face the three hunters. It lowers its head and opens its mouth to show its long fangs before letting out its ear-piercing scream. It doesn't seem to be fazed at all by the charge. In fact, it seems annoyed at even more strange creatures entering its territory and crouches to pounce. Growlgra snarls something in his own language, probably a curse and begins to whip his bola in a circle over his head.

"It gonna be pouncing!" Nihss screams as he drops into a fighting crouch.

Yeah, so you managed to piss it off :D. Roll for init..

Urrffrah is sitting in her log watching the grey hunter thing when suddenly a huge racket starts up nearby. Something is barking and snarling, and alos appears to be banging chunks of wood and metal together. In the midst of all this racket, Urrffrah's keen ears pick up the mouth-noises of Sssil barking her name. The creature spins around towards the cacophony and lets out that loud piercing scream Urrffrah can see the muscles rippling under its hide as it crouches down to leap, the barghest apparently forgotten in the face of this new threat.

Alright. Roll init. If you attack from within the log, you can reach anything in the immediate square in front of you, but it has partial concealment. Otherwise you can get out of the log and get normal attacks.

Yay, Sssssil's plan worked perfectly!

Ssssil carried on making noise, right up until he heard Nilss make the statement regarding poucing. That...dind't sound like something a scared creature did...

The lizar reflexively stuck his short sword out, hoping to allow the creatures weight to inflict some terible damage. Of course, that would also mean Ssssil was going to let the creature get very close. Perhaps he should have thought it all through first...

Damn, Ssssil pulls a perfectly wonderful init of 17 then blows it with a terrible attack roll of 9 :( Are we moving away from readied actions, or can he effectively do the 'set spear versus charge' style trick? If the creature isn't really 'pouncing' or he can't ready, then I guess he'll delay then full round attack. Let me know!

Readied actions are fine. The lasstiir is pouncing(the actual ability). So if you want to ready anything vs the pounce, go ight ahead.

Woohoo, back to the action :D.

Urrffrah's ears perk up as she hears that the others have finally arrived. With the sky-face's attention finally diverted away from her, she attempts to work her way quietly out of her hiding place, ears flattened back as she pulls herself out to where she can focus her gaze on her prey. It has hunters in front of it and behind it now. She hopes that if it tries to run, it doesn't get too far - she imagines it'll probably try to climb up high to where she can't easily reach it. At least there it won't be in her way any more. But she's feeling rather hungry...

Of course, Urrffrah is always hungry, but that's beside the point ;). So here are some rolls. Dunno if I can do all of this in one turn but I figure I may as well roll it anyway. Init = 22 (19+3), yay :D. Then a Stealth roll...sorry, Silent Move, for creeping out of the log without attracting the baboon thingy's attention again = 21 (13+8). And then, if I can, an Attack roll to try and bite its bum = 22 (17+5). Yay some good rolls today :D. Since I'm fairly confident that's a hit, here is a Bite roll...9 (6+3)! :D :D :D Okay I think my dice are liking me today :D.
On another note, I've noticed on my char sheet I currently have 5 Non-Lethal damage. I can't remember where that came from but presumably that'll have to wait until I get some kind of healing from somewhere, or have a long enough rest.
To those watching, when Urrffrah emerges from the log she will fix her gaze on the baboon thingy ASAP - that intent, hunter's stare that you see from lions and whatever in various nature programmes. Oh yeah, and she'll have the glowing-purple-eyes thing going on as well ;).

K, Ameena, its going to be really hard to MS, considering that it knows you're there and is less than 10 feet from you. But let me do some rolls and we'll see. It might end up distracted by the others, but considering how crappy Beo's intimidate was... And yeah, Its got an AC of 9. If it was drunk and half asleep :D And AFAIR, Urrffrah got the subdual from being kicked repeatedly and flung around by the unconcious Thessan. Yeah, you need to rest or heal to make it go away. Map coming soon, but I'm swamped cuz I have to make up work from being gone. Hopefully up tonight

ROUND 1

INIT
Urrffrah 22
Sssil 17
Growlgra 9
Lasstiir 7
Nihss NAT 1

Urrffrah creeps out of the log. Those around notice her eyes are flaring with a strange purple light as she fixes her gaze intently on the unaware predator. Sensing that it has been distracted by the rest of her pack, she darts up and clamps her jaws right at the place where its long articulated tail joins its back. The creature explodes into action with a loud scream of surprise, jumping three feet straight up and whipping the barghest in the face with its tail as it manages to dislodge her. It hits the ground a few feet in front of Urrffrah, and although the heavy tail stung a bit, the barghest is pleased to see the long bloody rents on the beast's haunches left by her teeth. The scent of the blood brings her long-dampened instincts up, and she can feel the mana of the hunt singing through her body as the eerie purple shining of her eyes grows even brighter.

Beo, I'm confused if you want to ready vs a pounce/charge or delay? And I dont think you can set a short sword vs charge. Well, you can, but you arent gonna get the double damage. I might give you a couple points for the sheer audacity of waving a pin at a 300 lb leaping cat-ape...Naaah. ;)

Sssil grips his short sword with both hands and braces it against his chest, hoping if the lasstiir decides to pounce at him, he can at least stab it with his sword as it bears hm to the ground. The angry beast sniffs the blood leaking from its haunches, then goes back into a crouch, green eyes flashing as it looks from person to person.

Growlgra whips his bola over his head, the cord thrumming as the bika expertly snaps his wrist forwards and tosses the spinning weapon at the chest of the great cat-like beast. The weighted cords smack solidly across the beast's neck and one foreleg. There is a humming sound as the momentum of the cords cause them continue wrapping around and around until they are played out, completely entangling the affected leg. Although unlike the swamp deep earlier, the lasstiir is much to bulky to actually have the bolas do any damage, it is still slowed down considerably. The lasstiir stands with an ungainly hopping motion as it tries to regain its balance, obviously unable to pounce now.

The angry beast screams and moves towards Growlgra, seeing him as the weakest due to his small size. Its entangled leg slows it down greatly and prevents it from doing one of those deadly leaps the creatures are known for. However, it still moves blindingly fast and is on the bika within seconds, its white fangs glittering in the afternoon light. Growlgra brings a forearm up and knocks the lasstiir's head away from his torso an instant before the teeth snap shut.

Nihss nearly crashes into Sssil as the tracker stops suddenly and has to spend a half second regaining his balance. He doesnt allow this to stop him, however. As soon as he sees the lasstiir moving towards Growlgra he runs towards it and brings his heavy pathmaker down on the creatures back. The heavy one sided blade carves a huge gash in the creature's side as the angry ape-beast twists to avoid the solid blow but stumbles on its entangled paw.

K. Beo, so since you readied but it ended up not being able to charge, I really dont like the fact that you just lost an action(that whole discussion which was dropped cuz I got super busy), so what should we do here? Do you want to just be able to go on init count 22 1/2 just for round 2?

Map up as soon as I do Ian and OB's thread

Map. Note that I spent like an hour on RPGMapShare.com and other sites looking for the image of a hollow downed tree and couldnt find one! There is some of the most obscure and random images on these sites, but no hollow logs! WTF. So, I had to improvise the same thing I did with the turtle den only it doesnt look as good. Oh well.

Can I just check a few things? Basically, would it be possible to Grapple the creature (ie pin it down) and bite its face off (or whichever bit I can reach at that time), or do I get penalties for stuff like that? It says on the website that there's stuff like a -4 penalty to attack and that you only do Non-Lethal damage and stuff, but is it even possible to do Non-Lethal damage with big sharp pointy teeth? Not that I'd want to - the sooner I stop this thing from wriggling about, the sooner I get some nommage :D. Also, would it make it harder for the others to hurt the creature if I'm basically getting in the way by being on top of it like that?

Heres a better rule book. Its the 3.5 Rule Compendium and its what I use cuz I really really dont like the d20SRD cuz its way too condensed and doesnt explain anything well.http://www.scribd.com/doc/23447971/D-D- ... endium-OEF I actually use this site even more than my paper version cuz its all easily indexed and searchable. Just select whatever you want to look up from the alphabetical list on the right or type whatever you want in the search bar.

To answer your question, you can use one natural attack at a -4 penalty. It doesnt have to be non-lethal, dont know where you read that. You get in the way if someone is ranged attacking and theres a chance you can be hit instead of the target. And everyone in a grapple is denied their dex bonus to AC, except if you have certain feats.

Okay...I was just quickly reading on the webby earlier when I made that post. As I'm not 100% up with 3.5 I didn't know that the d20srd website had condensed the info and stuff. It says on dealing damage...
"While grappling, you can deal damage to your opponent equivalent to an unarmed strike. Make an opposed grapple check in place of an attack. If you win, you deal nonlethal damage as normal for your unarmed strike (1d3 points for Medium attackers or 1d2 points for Small attackers, plus Strength modifiers). If you want to deal lethal damage, you take a -4 penalty on your grapple check.
Exception: Monks deal more damage on an unarmed strike than other characters, and the damage is lethal. However, they can choose to deal their damage as nonlethal damage when grappling without taking the usual -4 penalty for changing lethal damage to nonlethal damage."
It also says that the Dex bonus thing only applies to enemies that you aren't Grappling, but still applies to those that you are. So in this instance there is only one enemy, so it doesn't matter.
This was the page I was reading from - http://www.d20srd.org/srd/combat/specia ... tm#grapple
So, people can still hit the thing okay if I'm sitting on it, they just can't shoot? Well that's okay - Growlgra already used his bola thingy and I think everyone else just has swords and stuff, right? Well, Urrffrah isn't really up with ranged attacks anyway - they're sort of cheating, as far as she's concerned, she being a creature whose method of killing is to get in there and make holes in it until it stops moving...or at least, until it stops moving enough for her to get it down her gullet :D. I'm actually knackered right now 'cause it's Thursday night, I've been in work early all week (though not as early as last week, fortunately), it's heading toward half one in the morning, and I have to get up early again tomorrow. But I'll see if I can at least get round to checking this forum so I can post in this thread and hopefully get my teeth into some more yummy meat. Om nom nom. Hmm...I wonder if Urrffrah would bite a chunk out of someone and swallow it, rather than just plain biting them...lol that would be cool (if somehwat unpleasant for the dinn...er...victim

Yeah. Thats for unarmed strikes, like if someone without natural weapons was going to punch when grappled. You are not unarmed cuz you have natural weapons. The key words are "nonlethal damage as normal". Anyone without natural weapons (unless you are a monk or have certain feats im not gonna get into) ALWAYS deals non-lethal damage when attacking weaponless. And anyone who is being grappled loses their dex bonus to AC vs everyone else except other grapplers unless you have the Improved Grab SA and do something i'm not going to get into.

And dur. I just realized the lastiir should be 5x10 instead of 5x5 to show its Large (long) size. Sorry!

How about you let Ssssil draw his axe to make a full round attack and along with the 22 1/2 init we call it even :)

Ssssil was caught by surprise when the creature didn't pounce, thanks to the resourceful Bika. The lizar instead scrambled to free his hand axe from his belt, and moved in along with Nilss, swinging both weapons and yelling to distract the creature from attacking the furry hunter.

Full round attack: main attack 5, off hand attack 11 :( Oops, no, I meant 7 and 13 because of the flanking bonus with Nilss. Still :( I'm guessing.

Can Ssssil either make a new nature roll, or have a sense from his previous roll about the toughness of the creature's hide? I'm hoping the 13 attack roll might help too. Basially, is it feasable to use a -1/-2 set of attacks (+1/+0 with flanking) against the monster, or does he need to concentrate on a single strike (+3/+5) to get through a high AC? New nature roll was a middling, 14 if needed.

Raixel said a few posts up that it only has an AC of 9...so it's pretty wimpy in that respect, really ;). But you'd kind of expect that considering it isn't obviously covered in natural armour or flabby bits or anything ;).

Having already caused the creature to leak some red-life-water, Urrffrah attemps to make it leak a little more, and lunges at its back legs in an attempt to bite one of them hard enough that the creature won't be able to use it any more. Maybe she can even manage to bite hard enough that something comes off in her mouth...

I'll hold off Grappling for now, I think, now that it's the morning and I'm a bit less sleepy ;). I'll just try and chomp at its arse until I break something. As mentioned IC, if Urrffrah manages to detach any parts of this critter then they'll be immediately domated to the cause of filling the bottomless pit that is her stomach :D. Sooo, Attack roll = ohh arse, botch :P. So she probably misses and gets kicked in the face for her trouble :P.

Well, just hit it till it stops moving - if you can keep it in more or less one piece, it'll be much easier to eat ;).

Sorry for the huge delays. As I said in OOC, the pattern of no weekend updates unfortunately is going to continue for a bit, hopefully not through september though. The good news is that this gives me a lot of thinking time to come up with more horrible fiendish plots and monsters to torture you all with!

And I never said that the lasstiir had an AC of 9! Its as big as a lion and nearly as fast as a cheetah, why on earth would it have such a low AC?

Just to let you know, I will never tell a player any mechanical info about an NPC or monster. Even if a PC has a skill or spell that gives them such info about an NPC/creature the player will never get exact numbers/game-terms of HP, AC, BAB, alignment ect.

And since the know nature is about a specific feature, I'll allow it with a penalty representing your lack over overall knowledge of the lastiir's habits/physiology. Its in Sssil's attack resolution.

Yeah, I'll let you make a full attack at count 22 1/2 and then give it an AC of 9. Yeah. A brief demonstration of the likelyhood of that: * <---- a snowflake ^^^^ <---- the fires of hell. What do you think its chances are? :D

ROUND 2

INIT
Sssil 22 1/2 This round only!
Urrffrah 22
Sssil 17 After his action
Growlgra 9
Lasstiir 7
Nihss NAT 1

Sssil whips his hand axe from his belt and lunges at the entangled lasstiir. The creature's quick reflexes are hampered by the bola twisted around its neck and forepaw, tying that leg up against its body. Although it twists out of the way and avoids the sword strike easily, it does not see the axe coming in low from the other side. The large cat-ape attempts to dart back as it suddenly notices the axe chopping towards its neck, but stumbles due to being on 3 legs. Even so, it twists out of the way far enough that Sssil barely manages TO carve a shallow furrow on its shoulder. You didnt roll damage so I rolled for you. It was a (1d6=2) The tracker realizes that if the lasstiir didnt have that bola on its foreleg crippling its movement, the axe blow would have missed it by more than a foot.

Urrffrah darts forward, the purple light of her eyes flaring with excitement as she revels in the taste of the redwater still in her mouth. Her instincts rise fully and she leaps at the strange beast, razor fangs gleaming, filled with the desire to bite into its flesh, to consume! Unfortunately although the barghest is much bulkier and muscular than the lithe cat-thing, it is physically bigger than she is and slightly faster. As she leaps at it with jaws agape, it crouches down and presses its body into the damp earth. The surprised barghest sails a foot over its body and plows into the ground, tearing a deep rut in the spongy soil and filling her mouth with mud. You're prone and have a mouthful of mud. Nice Wile E Coyote impression ;)

Growlgra pulls one of his double edged greenstone knives and stabs at the lasstiir's face. The creature was wtaching the larger barghest and lizar and seemed to ignore the small furry hunter as the least threatening. That changes as the razor sharp dagger stabs through the sky blue patch on the right side of the creature's bulbous nose, staining the bright blue hide crimson. Unfortuantely the knife doesnt go in very far as the lasstiir jerks its head back and screams in rage. Growlgra winces and his large ears fold back to lay flat against his head until the loud shriek ends.

The lasstiir whirls around and lunges at Sssil, who seems larger than everyone else due to his height and musculature in the eyes of the simple predator, and therefore the leader of this pack. Fortunately it cannot bring its powerful clawed paws into play, its preferred attacking method. The tracker has heard stories of starving lasstiir pouncing on unaware lizar walking underneath their tree and disembowling them with two quick kicks from their extremely powerful hind legs before leaping back up into the tree with their prey clamped firmly in their jaws and disappearing in the thick swamp canopy. Sssil brings up his axe as the beast tries to bite his arm, slapping the lastiir's head away with the heavy axe.

Nihss lets out an ululating war whoop and hacks at the creature's lashing rat-like prehensile tail, hoping to sever it and throw the predator even further off balance. He nbrings his heavy pathmaker down on the base of the tail with a solid *thunk*. Although it doesnt sever it completely, blood spurts as the crude single edged sword buries itself halfway into the thick tail. The lasstiir screams, obviously enraged from the blow. Its tail hangs limply as the young swamp lizar pulls hi sblade back out with a noise like removing an axe from a log.

The lasstiir wobbles on its feet slightly and shakes its head, spraying blood droplets from the wound on its face everywhere. It is bleeding from many wounds, although its shining green eyes ar filled with rage and it shows no signs of wanting to flee.

Alright. You guys are doing good! Map's the same except for Urrffrah is now at B7 (and remember the lasstiir actually takes up C8 and B8), so I'm not gonna redo it for now.

Urrffrah snarls in frustration and anger at the irritating creature that so quickly got out of the way of her jaws. She doesn't intend to let it do so again, and pulls herself to her feet in order to bite at its nearest leg once again.

So, Move Action to stand up and then Standard to bite the fucker. Note that if the nearest leg is the one entangled by the bola, Urrffrah will go for the next-nearest - she isn't stupid enough to risk freeing up one set of claws to let the blue-faced bastard start swiping at her or anyone else ;). Attack roll = 19 (14+5), damage = 8 (5+3)
