Played for a couple of hours and I'm super impressed. It's Dungeon Master 2012 (even down to some knowing puzzle references). Mechanics are spot-on and the atmosphere is incredible. If the level design stays true to its promise we're onto something special here.

Took me a while to get used to right-clicking for attacks, but I'm adjusted nicely now :)

I'm about half way through level 3 after about 4 hours playing. I'm taking it very slowly and searching for everything, The
Spoiler
spiders
on this level keep killing me, bloody buggers! They're pretty scary and seem very dangerous. I haven't worked out yet what is the best attack against them, I also don't think my team are strong enough... Feels like the Worms on DM level 4 all over again! :D

I've had a few frantic moments in the game already. I got messed up with my movement and blew half my party up with a fireball against a wall; a classic old DM problem, that's still funny in 2012 :-) And I panicked when being pursued
Spoiler
by a tiny poison spewing walking mushroom
and fell down a pit that I didn't even see! Classic stuff :)

I'm very much enjoying this, it's exactly what I was hoping for, although I do have a couple of criticisms:

1) The floating tooltips over the inventory get annoying very quickly and keep getting in the way when I'm trying to manage my inventory. It would be nice to be able to disable this, but use a key modifier when hovering over an item to get the tooltip when you want it.
2) Mixing potions
Spoiler
is over-complicated and doesn't make a lot of sense. I have to open my pestle and mortar by right clicking on it, then put the ingredient AND the flask in it? Why do I want to put a flask in my pestle and mortar? It would be simpler if all I needed to do was put the ingredient in there, and if I have a flask in my backpack, then automatically use it to make the potion. The process is a little too complex for realtime gameplay when you're being attacked and I can think of several ways it could be improved to avoid this frustration.
. It also gets tricky knowing what you're doing because of the floating tooltips.

Anyway, those gripes aside, this is shaping up to be the best game of 2012. :-D Thanks so much Almost Human, you did a fantastic job and I can't wait to play the rest of the game :-)

Hello all !

Do you know how many levels there are in this game ?

Level 2 here too, the game is a success to me, faithful to the good old dm-like clone, technically wise, it's very good too. The little intro at the start is very nice with a beautifull music

Level 1 was a good warm-up, but i expect for some real challenge in the deeper levels

congrats to the authors

Just an hour of game and it is a dream coming true! :P
I am feeling that I am "at home", with torch, doors, secret, button, shuriken, little details on walls...It is definitively the Dungeon Master spirit.
It is even better when taking the old school approach with paper, scotch-tape, pencil. I have also selected hard difficulty level, without damage text and no item properties.
Taking my time on each tile, waiting the next corner, drawing stuff by hand.
Really a brilliant game where I hope to such many other dungeons in the future.
Very impressive job, PetriH and team!
Thanks a lot for providing me an exciting game and time.
Why it isn't "sick day" today? I have to go to work? It is a joke?

Level 3..

the cast magic system is somewhat confusing at times but it's ok. Haven't found many puzzles in level 2, also been knocking at every walls to find secret rooms. I found some strange items like a skull, a calice.. but i don't know if they can be used. I also made two dreams in which someone talked to me to let me know he's waiting for me at the end of the dungeon (i like the idea of dreams).

The game is pretty good, really, i'm enjoying it a lot - thanks to the authors, i hope there will be many additionnal dungeons

Well thanks guys... just when i thought I could work a bit on my work project... kidding. Awesome game! I advertised it to all of my buddies and most of them bought it (And if they didn't I bought it for them).

The game has that great DM feel and as my friend put it "It's a lot more forgiving than Conflux!". Well of course Conflux is WAY more complicated and devious. Traps and puzzles right now are typical DM flavour - few of them are quite devious! I can't wait for the map editor!

What I do like: The skill system, the trait system. All those secrets that make me search the walls - reminds me of Eye of Beholder's Special Quests!\

What I don't like: No easy way to close inventory. I keep pressing ESC but instead it throws me to the main menu. And the potion mixing takes a bit of the viewport as well

Got to level 3 already and
Spoiler
I had a few jump scares already. The spiders are silent little buggers that love to creep up on you but they're quite vunerable to Ice Shards. The "Grave" trap was awesome - all of my friends fell for it and I did myself but then I looked for a quite an easy solution that was on a wall nearby! Marvellous!
. Can't wait to descent deeper when I get back from work today.

Well, finally I downloaded it this morning - after all the arsing about of my connection last night, telling me it'd take anywhere between two and four hours to download, it just did it in about ten minutes so yay :D. Haven't unzipped it yet but I'll get to that when I'm done checking all my forums, after which I fully expect to spend the whole time between then abd going ot club at about 4:15 (apart from the bit where I'll be eting lunch) wandering around the dungeon and going "Wooooo...:D".
I think my dad said he was down to Level 4 (this is me remembering the last things he said about it last night - he's at work now). He said it was really tense, great atmosphere/ambience. And he said it was more puzzle-heavy than DM, or something. Something about puzzles, anyway. But he still thinks it's brilliant :D.
I'm gonna play on Old-School mode ('cause that's how we all did it "back in the old days", eh? ;)) and probably get lost after five minutes, yay! :D

I debated on going Old School, but I have so little spare time, I opted for the auto-map in the end. It definitely makes things easier :-)

Indeed the game is great so far. I'm at level 5 and can already spot a direct link to Dungeon Master in layout and progression. It has a bit more puzzles but nothing too complex so far, really. I have picked the old school mode w/ normal difficulty, and haven't felt the need to draw a single tile yet. I think I found most secrets, of course most of them are quite easy to find. I'm getting into fights that are a bit tougher now and I kind of regret my party composition & skill assignment but I'll play it through :)

Can't wait for the level editor. I miss the non-linearity of CSB/Conflux already!

I would, but it's already filled up with the "viable" word as in "the only viable rogue is a throwing weapon minotaur specialist, missile weapons are not viable due to requiring strength for damage and always hitting..." :(

As for the skull, I don't know if there's another use, but
Spoiler
Minotaurs have a trait that gives them +3 attack power per skull carried. Mine has two :P

Let the pseudo-intellects have their fun

Anyway, I ended up dieing on level 3 because I didn't take a note I found very seriously. Turns out I really should watch my back in places like that. :x

EDIT: There's only ten posts with the word viable in it, though :o http://www.grimrock.net/forum/search.ph ... 51964d84b6

Lol Kenshiro, I just found the note you're talking about. Yeah, finally got the game up and running, yaaay and omg it's great :D. I think I agree somewhat with Gambit on the potion-making. So far I'm basically finding it impossible to make a potion, pass to correct character, open inventory, and drink it all whlist fighting something. And the mobs I'm fighting atm are kinda quick ;). So I just hold out till the battle ends and drink a potion then. I've only had to do it twice and that was mainly due to a property of the attacks by the mob-type I'm currently fighting. Bastards. Fortunately it was my Fighter who was taking the damage so he didn't die. Yay for tank doing his job ;). I'm playing with one Fighter, one Rogue, and two Mages, but I can see mucho potential fun to be had from a party of, say, four Rogues. Or four Mages. Or something. Half the characters might find they don't get any equipment early on but hey, I'm sure there's plenty of epic loot to be had later on :D.
There's also a set of those iron door thingys on this level which I haven't opened yet - I'll probably go back there and have another go 'cause I seem to be quite far from that bit now (no map) and haven't seen anything that might help there. I've probably just missed something...
Anyway, have had to quit due to the fact it's club tonight so I had to log off! Off I go to play Black Crusade for a bit instead :D.

The only really negative thing I can say about Legend of Grimrock is this: It's so visually impressive, and so great at filling the screen with an immersive experience, that it makes the original DM look kinda pathetic ;-)

I do not think I saw a bad review anywhere about the game.

That is so very cool.

I hope that the people from Almost Human understand that everybody will want a lot more from them now...

I didn't even know this game was DM based. I just downloaded it as the 2nd new game I bought on Steam since I got my new comp up and running recently. Then I went 'wow, DM! It should be called Legend of Skullkeep' ;). Actually, I like it better than Skullkeep.

I'm running two fighters(minotaur and human), one rogue(lizardman, who I named Hisssa without even realizing I was playing a DM based game ;)) and one mage(insect guy). I havent really found much of a use for the rogue yet, though. He just mostly sits in the back and pokes people with a spear and throws knives. I'm on level 2, and so far its *great* although the secrets and puzzles are kind of easy for an old DM-head like me, at least at this point.

I'm getting that same sense of 'wow' that I got when I first played DM and my mage is just sitting in the back cuz I don't know the runes for fireball, so I start randomly pressing runes while the snail in front of me wails on my fighters. And the auto map is a nice feature, although I still miss my dad and his best friend going "step, step, step to a wall. Ok, turning right. Step, step, door on right... ect" when I was little, and one of them mapped while the other drove. Unfortunately, I don't have the time or patience to map it myself, and I'm playing solo, so I'm just glad theres an automap feature (even cooler that its optional!)

But yeah, great game to be welcomed back to Steam and the net by after an annoyingly long and unwanted hiatus.

Edit: Forgot to mention a lil' minor complaint or 2 I have, cuz I was too busy geeking out on the game. I like to keep the inventory menu open for easy access to stuff, but when it's open, you cant pull the chain to open grates. Thats my only (admittedly minor and nit-picky) complaint so far. That and (afaik) theres no quicksave button. Going into the menu to save every time kinda is annoying. But like I said, nitpicky, minor, yadda yadda.

Woo! Just had my first "JEEEEZUS!" moment in the game. Right at the beginning of lev 3 there's the part where the
Spoiler
skeleton archer is shooting at you, and the gross bird/bat things are flying round.
So I hid in the little alcove and killed 2
Spoiler
bird-things.
By that point one of my fighters was near death, so I took my torch off and went to sleep, only to be woken up in a second by the terrified sound of my guy's death scream (just like DM's woo!) and the disgusting
Spoiler
close up of one of those bird things in my face.
In the dark. Yeah. I fully admit I went "JEE-EEEY-ZUS!" and jumped a bit. Great fun!
