DM/CSB references in other mediums

Post by Saumun »

I've just found out that there is a heavy metal band from Australia called Diabolical Demon Director.

I wonder what other nods toward DM/CSB are out there...

That should be media, not mediums ;).
I don't know if I've come across anything that was a direct reference, but there are plenty of grid-based RPGs out there which I'm sure could trace their ancestry back to DM :).

I think both are acceptable.
Medium media in latin.
Mediuum mediums in english or french grammar.
Here they say so: http://grammarist.com/usage/media-mediums/

I don't know how many times it's been referenced in other works.. but i do know a lot of it's origins come from a scattering of real and imaginary people created before DM, and a basic rule system of DnD... We at one point, had a discussion on where the names came from. Azizi, gothmog, Tiggy, Sonja, wu tse, and others..

tiggy aka twiggy a model (Tamal is a "spicy dish".. if you can make the connection ;) )

Sonja, aka Red Sonja, character from film and firstly from comics, as early as 1973.

Azizi Johari, an actress of little clothing. (don't worry, no nudity in theimage)

In islam, several main prophets were labeled as messengers of Nabi

Gotmog is from Lord of the rings. Lord of the Balrogs which are described as creatures of shadow and flame. Thus his red eyes and shadow cloak.
( I'm thinking Linflas and Gando Thurfoot are inspired by Tolkeins novels too..)

Stamm apparently is a german last name meaning tree trunk, and the idea of a blade caster seems to fit here too with chopping trees..

Alex Ander needs no explanation..

Syra was possibly a reference to Syra Marty, an actress who played the character Hortense in a film called "Fanny Hill". The name Hortense means "gardener". she's the blonde on the left

Wu Tse, a character in a movie from 1939, speaking of the only female emperor of china Wu Zetian.

Iado is not so much a name, as it is a reference to the smooth way a sword is drawn, used to cut, and then returned to the sheath clean. Chiburi is the removal of the blood.

Wuuf the Bika is likely a refference to Bika Reed, an egyptologist born in 1931 who wrote a number of books on egypt. The wuuf part is just a joke about the dog head.. There is a station which uses the slogan "big dog country" and is labeled as "WUUF" but they didn't adopt those until 2002.. so not likely a reference.

Chany Sayyadina Sihaya is from Dune of course..

Mophus took me a while to work out.. it's Ministry of public health US. .. and thus, the healer.. Clever that one :)

Elija Lion of Yaitopya.. Yaitopya is the local name for Ethiopia.. and the lion is on their flag.. This brings us to the Rastafarians which are an offshoot of hebrew belief settled there, and Elijah is one of the forms of god.. I think this is just a really strange round about way of saying they like Bob Marley..

I'll clear up a few more later on, I should try to get some sleep, as I just realized what time it was :P

Andy Jaros shared the origins of many DM/DM2 character names when I interviewed him years ago. He later provided the same info to Edge magazine for one of their DM retrospectives. Christophe transcribed it on the Encylopedia, here: http://dmweb.free.fr/?q=node/199#toc9
