[Custom dungeon] The Tower of Champions [RTC] [Adamski]

Post by Adamski »

Version: 4.0 for RTC 0.49
Platform: RTC
Author: Adamski
Date published: 2009, November 10
Date last updated: 2010, January 17

Story:
Image
The Tower of Champions was designed by Junius, the greatest architect ever born. This building is full of mortal traps, puzzles, treasures and monsters; all the magic mechanisms have a reset every new moon. Its purpose was to choose new members for the 4 guilds; the reached floor corresponded to a particular rank inside the guilds: who got the top would became a master. Unluckily the human ambiton caused a huge tragedy: many adventures found the death trying to reach a better position in their life. So the guild masters decided to stop the tradition and close the tower forever, sealing its gate with 4 keys. After the great war against Lord Chaos, this evil creature was imprisoned by the guild masters at the highest floor of the tower, trapped in a magic barrier. But, while he was waiting for the sentence, a mysterious conspiracy broke up the long story of the guilds. You are a man without memory, probably connected to those past events. You must escape from your cell if you want to know the truth...

Aim:
Kill Lord Chaos
Open all the 13 treasure rooms
Find the final treasure room
Solve the eight parts of the Circle Riddle and get the firestaff
Collect all the runes
Find the 4 flying treasure chests
Find all the 20 GOR coins and get the magic mirrors for each class
Complete the 5 parts of the pumpkin game
Get the Bow of Flames
Find the Four Leaf Clover
Find Zenith's secret laboratory
Find Valentin's secret room
Find Junius' secret chamber
Extract all the gems
Find the 4 hidden characters
Open the gate of The Nine Worlds

Notes:

History:
New in 4.0:
Correct the problem with the resurrection (no more cheats 8) )
Correct the bug of the infinite gems
A longer and harder final battle
Improved bosses
Eight new monsters
Added the "pumpkin game"
Added a new spell
New sound effects and music
A new final sequence
Some minor fixes

New in 3.3 version:
Removed the damn wall!

New in 3.2 version:
Added a wall in the mages guild that makes impossible to finish the game!
Added a big hint for the timetable puzzle
Changed the timedemon
Fixed a puzzle in "the gems" level

New in 3.1 version:
Add a hint in the stair maze (finding the exit is hard)
When the clock final puzzle is solved, the electrified floor is disabled

New in 3.0 version:
Removed about 1000 useless items
Added mechanisms to start/stop recursive events
Added new hints for the most obscure riddles
Calibrated the monster difficulty
Added some new graphics
Added new sounds
Fixed texts and signs
Fixed some bugs
Removed some probable dead ends

Hints and comments:
The characters in the hall of champions (also the hidden ones inside the tower) can be put back into the mirrors so you can choose another one. To do this you have to select (as leader) the character you want to leave and touch HIS mirror.
Some treasure chambers and hidden characters can be lost forever if you do not open/find them: it's intentional.
There are 40 secrets in the game.

Wow, this looks impressive! I sadly don't have enough time to beta-test, but I am sure someone here will volunteer. Good luck with the dungeon, I'm looking forward to play it!

Looks interesting! Those wall shields are cool.

It's all too bright though, you need some shading on those far objects, everything looks washed out and flat. Try adding in some highlights and shadows on your wall textures. Also, the pillars in the second screenshot don't match the viewport perspective and look out of place.

 It looks absolutely fantastic! Great work! :D

I don't have enough time for proper beta-testing, but I might just take a look at it this weekend (PM me if you want and I'll send you my email address) - but I can't promise anything. And, yeah, my English is bad too. :(
Finally playing and immensely enjoying the awesome Thimbleweed Park-a-reno!

Thanks to everybody for your opinion about the graphic.
For the master and Jan: when I finish my last check I will send a pm, I think no later than this weekend. But the file is very big, about 27 Mb.
For Gambit: thanks for the suggestions, I've already changed the pillars. For the textures it is a hard work and, at the moment, I prefer working on the game mechanisms. After the beta testing I'm going to change the wallsets too (they are 15 different).
Another thing: the complete name is: "Expiation chapter I: Tower of Champions". At the beginning the game was bigger and I had to divide in two parts because I reached the maximum number of objects allowed in RTC. Anyway enery chapter has a conclusion.

27MB is nothing... :-) Wait till you see the filesize of Maze of Zagor! :-)

@Adamski: yes, textures are indeed hard and time consuming. But the more you can do to make them look less 2D, the more immersed in the game the player will be :-)

Wow! What is that number? It thought is was something like 10,000 items -- how could you possibly create that many!?!?!?!?

I second that vote. I particularly like the red brick wallset.
It's not a bug in the program, I've just gone and done something weird.

Ok, dungeon finished and tested.

I's a beta version therefore there could be many errors. The biggest problem? It's the huge amount of objects: above all relays, actions and triggers. But also during the game new object are created, for example, when you kill a monster (a rock pile becomes rocks, boulders and a club). In the past the game freezed when the limit went over, so I decreased drastically the objects. I tested the game many times doing only the necessary to complete, so without killing all the monsters or breaking every barrell (sometimes whit objects created when you destroy them). Te general engine is OK, but I don't know what happens now playing to the full. The beta testing is useful for this (I do not want play any more...). I will contact in pm who asked me (beowuuf, the master, Jan). Thanks to everybody.
To Gambit: first images looked bad because the maximum level of light in the dungeon was very high, now the maximum light value is lower. I didn't modify any texture.

Information:

17 levels
14 new wallsets
new sounds and music
new objects (weapons and other)
a lot of new flooitems and wallitems
new mechanisms never seen before
a huge amount of riddles
4 secret characters
13 hidden treasure rooms
"new" monster (from EOB, EOB II, EOB III, HERETIC etc..)

Story: you can find everything written during the game (scrolls and books); the starting charachter doesn't have a background, but this is part of the story...

Have fun, and try to avoid next screen when you will play

He said it's Beta testing and that he'll send it to those who said they're willing to playtest it. Once he's got the bugs and stuff ironed out, then I imagine it'll "go Alpha" and be released to the rest of us ;).

Zed, are you the creator of Dragon Tomb? In my opinion you should make your new dungeons with this graphic (and atmosphere)...
New graphic wasn't a great problem. I spent the most of time making mechanisms and checking them. I have worked for two years but discontinuously. And this is only the first part, the second one is in progress...

Thanks ian. I'm not working on a second dungeon: at the beginning this dungeon and the "new" were the same thing. I created the levels when they were united. This project must be finished.

So far I have totally failed as a playtester. :( I had to ask at least 5 times Adamski what to do, and I'm still stuck at the very beginning. :(

No, you haven't failed. The start is really difficult, but totally different from the rest of the game. It doesn't look like a typical DM game.

No Zed, the game is too difficult and big to be finished in few days. Sunday I'm going to post the link to download the definitive version. The betatesters have done an excellent work: with their help I found errors, dead ends, language mistakes and... non-expected ways to cheat. Now I'm working to add an "engine" to manage the invisibility (it's an alternative way to solve some situations).

Vice versa, I've just got back from work, and my D&D game is quietening down for the weekend, so I will probably have more time to keep going a little longer and give more last minute feedback!
