Odd difficulty with logging in on this forum.

Post by MasterWuuf »

You exceeded the maximum allowed number of login attempts.
In addition to your username and password you now also have to solve the CAPTCHA below.

That's what showed up, when I tried to check in on the DM forums.

The odd part...I have my settings fixed to log me in automatically, so 'maximum login attempts' didn't make sense to me.

Oh well, I simply did the 'solve the CAPTCHA' puzzle, of course horrified that I might fall into a pit :o ,
and
Spoiler
VIOLA, thanks Sophia
I was back among the DM fans.

P.S. We had a tornado visit the area. It tore up a High School about eight miles east of us.
Even made national television. We had some wind, and a few periods of hard rain,
but the weather wasn't even much of an inconvenience to us.
Saddened however, to hear of the one death which was a direct result of the tornado.

Is there a magical number of 'attempted' log ins, using the correct ID, but the incorrect password,
that can cause this difficulty?

If that is the case, then anyone could visit, pick an I.D., and intentionally do the log in process using wrong passwords. :?:

I found that correcting the difficulty was very simple. That's was nice.

Exactly. This is how "brute force" spambots work. However, it requires millions of guesses at passwords for spambots to find the correct one. The more complex your password, the less likely a brute force attack will ever guess it.

Bad passwords, easily broken: qwerty, mypetname, myfriendsname, anyname, realwords, etc.
Good passwords, very hard to break: a5b8H9(%fC2M0, D5va*jXW26N, K2Lmx%9aPL3v7Dz

Of course, no-one can remember complex passwords such as the above Good examples, so here's some methods that work really well:

Personally, I use sentences with a string of numbers mixed in. But an odd thing happene when I entered the forum today. I use noscript, and theres ever only one site linked in. (dungeon-master). However, when I jumped on today, the no script warning said 1/2 scripts allowed. I looked cuz I went wtf, never seen that before, and it was 'openx.org'.(which I instatly blocked). At the same time another tab opened up on firefox and tried to take me to some pay per view site and the DM site was just a blank screen. I of course did not allow the weird site and closed firefox and cleared my history and cookies. I have never had this happen before on this site or any other. I ran a malware/virus scan on my system(even though its set to auto scan weekly) just to make sure it wasnt from this end and everything came up clean.

I dont know if this is related to these attacks or what, but I thought you guys should know that this happened.

There's a global hacking event going on at the moment. Although I don't think it's related to Raixel's incident, perhaps we should be vigilant for it:

So, wuuf wasn't such a good pick for my password?
I figured, "Hey, I'm MasterWuuf. Sly me, who would ever figure out such a cunning password as wuuf."

Naaah! I'm just kidding. Or...am I?

I hope you're joking! Crikey, if people are using passwords that have part of their username in them, I might have to force an Admin "Reset all passwords" function and make everyone update their passwords to something better.

I'll be very annoyed if the forum gets hacked because of someone using an easily crackable password.

There's no excuse for using insecure passwords anymore. Hacking is rife and will only get worse. This is 2011 -- it's *everyones* responsibility to take their own web security SERIOUSLY.
