Rooney had to go for stamping on an opponent's nadgers right in front of the referee. Silly boy. England performed admirably after that with 10 men and had the better of the chances. Alas the penalty jinx continues.
"The Pope will have divided loyalties when Germany play Italy in the semi-final on Tuesday. The Pontiff, who has lived in Italy for 40 years but was born in Bavaria, will support one team in each half." (The Sun - via BBC website)
This tickled me and I wondered if his divine influence would thus have to alternate during the penatly shoot-out. If so it could be a very long night

I just hope France will win, since everybody laughed at them for being too old and too weak. It's time for Zidane to make all the critics shut up. Oh, and beating the nation that eliminated the host would help, too...
So would I, Linflas, so would I... But I have to admit that Italy was the better team, they were more dangerous. Still, it's sad that the Cinderella story of the German team had to come to an end. The streets sure have become a lot quieter here.
Nah, it can stay the way it is. After all, it is a quote from Herbert Zimmermann, the man who did the radio commentary for the World Cup final 1954 which Germany miraculously won against the "unbeatable" team from Hungary. Well, better luck in 4 years!
So who's gonna win the cup? Before a ball was kicked France were not fancied due to being too old. The Italians have been rocked by the match fixing scandal and also don't have such a hot team as they've had in the past. Yet both have made the final. I fear it could be a drab defensive game, but the Italy v. Germany semi-final was great viewing, so maybe not. My prediction is Italy to win 1-0.
It reads "Zidane strangles Figo! Now banned for the final!" The article claims that Italian media saw this "horrible scene", told the FIFA so, and now Zidane is banned for the final. It is a joke about the "Torsten Frings-affair", which caused quite some uproar here.
Well done Germany for winning the 3rd place match against the Portuguese cheaters. Great goals from Schweinsteiger (does it mean pig-farmer?). I think Germany played really well throughout the tournament despite having an inexperienced team - does this mean Klinnsmann's forgiven for living in California?
If only England could have mustered a similar level of spunk...
Yes, well done Germany! I just hope France will win tomorrow.
Currently, Klinsmann is holier than the Pope in Germany. I'm sure that those who want to marry him right now are the first ones who want to fire him should Germany have trouble qualifying for the European Championship. Schweinsteiger would mean pig-climber or pig-riser in English.
Trantor: That's what you'd literally translate "Schweinsteiger" to based on modern German, but like most names it has probably an ethymological origin not exactly identical to the literal meaning in modern language, as you can see on http://www.welt.de/data/2006/07/07/948663.html
