Torchwood
It's getting towards the time for tonight's episode of Torchwood and I just realised that I can't be arsed to watch it. I thought I'd get into this Doctor Who spin-off but actually it's a bit rubbish.
First episode was quite a nice intro and ep 3 was good but 2 and 4 were awful.
Anyone else have an opinion on it?

Well, I ended up watching it. It was better than last week's awful Cyberwoman episode but still it's lacking something -- I dunno, it just seems a bit flat, like it's trying too hard to be cool when in fact it isn't really at all. John Barrowman is good and Eva Myles as Gwen has potential but so far everyone else are just boring cradboard characters. Generally thumbs down.
Yes, that episode 2 was unforgivable. "Let's do a sex episode! That will totally dispell the myth that Doctor Who fans are nerdy teenage boys with too many hormones. Really! It will! Hey, where are you going...?"

I think I saw the first episode when I was slacking off work and that really caught my interest. I didn't have a clue what it was (not seen much of the new Dr Who either) but the cybermen reference gave it away. I've not had chance to really get into it because my tv card / xbox link was busted and I can't tune my TV in without a remote (lost it ). Was thinking of watching the repeats but I might not bother now...

Bah, don't avoid watching something just 'cause other people think it's rubbish...just because they think that, doesn't mean you will as well. I find the Godfather films yawningly boring, but my Media teacher thought they were fantastic (and took the piss out of me till the end of the year because I said I thought Farscape was better ).

Just caught up on torchwood, I must admit that I pretty much echo Gambit's sentiments.
The sex episode 2 was ok, but it was a complete rip off of the outer limits story, which, let's face it, had Alyssa Milano in it, so who can compete (although the outer limtis lost many cool points for a very weird ending with a pervy doctor spouting on about love)
The cyberwoman episode was dire, not jut for torchwood, but full stop as some of the most horrible TV I have ever watched...the plot was basic after a promising start, the acting was pretty dire even from any of the cast who have been better, the cyberwoman herself was terrible and the sentiment awful. I only kept watching just to see if the plot would have any arc consequences...except, without spoiling anything, no, no it does not.
Eh, i'll still watch next week's, but won't go out of my way if anything comes up to stop me

Inner geek won. I watched tonight's episode. It was actually a lot better than some of those earlier ones, though still not very good.
The story was clichéd and most of the torchwood support are still unlikable, especially Owen -- I don't know why Gwen would be attracted to him, he's an arsehole. Oh hang on, I forgot -- women are atrtacted to arseholes all the time... but hey, I digress. Toshi or whatever her name is showed a bit of backbone this time and finally got a bit of decent air time but is still woefully under-developed. This was episode 5 -- by now, we should really care about these characters and I don't care for them in the slightest. I just want to see if it gets any better.
The acting was a bit better in this episode but I couldn't stop laughing when Jack rammed the house with tractor and came out fighting as a one man gun machine, taking everyone down. Totally daft. And did anyone notice at the end, when the real cops took away the corrupt cop, he was walking more or less OK despite having been kneecapped?
The production of this episode was better: better direction and better photography. It was nice to be out of Cardiff.
My main criticism though is that there is absolutely no chemistry between the characters which simply makes this another by-the-numbers also ran. Having just finished watching Wonderfalls (ok, not sci-fi but that doesn't matter) which has chemsitry by the bucketload, Torchwood is very, very pale by comparison.

Hmm, I actually thought this episode was less good...the Faerie one last week was pretty cool...but it seemed nothing much happened in this one, and once the bad guy appeared near the end, I spent most of the rest of the time waiting for him to take off his mask/disguise so we could see what kind of scary-looking alien he was. This story felt more like a Horror than a Sci-Fi. T'was alright, but not exactly my favourite .

Yeah, the Faerie one was quite well produced -- on balance, you're right, it was definitely better than tonight's one. But better in the sense of "less bad".
Next week's one has more lesbian soft-porn by the looks of it, and while I'm rather annoyed by that aspect of Torchwood it *is* Danielle Denby-Ashe so it might be worth a look....
