In another hat I am helping to develop Dungeon Craft, an update to FRUA - Forgotten Realms Unlimited Adventures.
Pictures and interactive conversations are two of its strong points. And it is modeled after D&D 1st edition for the most part. And it includes a LOT of easy scripting possibilities. Not like DSAs
I don't really know what it is you folks are talking about in this thread but the words make me think that DC might be of help.

There are tons of games for FRUA. Most, but not all,
require some sort of update in the form of a hack.
Those folks did not have the advantage of clones
with added features, so they had to do hex-editing
of the runtime (or something like that).
