Race to the Ful Ya Pit

Post by Paul Stevens »

Guillaume Bastard <gb_sphenx@hotmail.com> and I have been
competing to see who can play a game of CSB the fastest..
The records so far:

Paul Stevens (Toadrot) 11 hours, 49 minutes , 20 seconds
Guillaume Bastard (Plague) 11 hours, 7 seconds
Paul Stevens (Toadrot) 8 hours, 20 minutes, 11 seconds

A recording of each of these games is available so that you
can see how we did it and verify that we did not cheat.

If you think you can do better the rules are:
1-Use CSB for windows 4.2 or later.
2-Select a single champion. Reincarnate (not Resurection)
3-Record entire game. This means you cannot save and restore.
And it means we can learn your tricks by replaying your game.
4-You can save the game and look for items with DMute, etc. Some
items have random location and would cause a great deal of luck to
be involved when searching.
5-The final time is shown in the 'time' field at the end of the game and
you make the screen small. Turn off Double Size in the Misc menu.
The time is sixths of a second.
6-No fair editing the dungeon or characters before starting.

Get YOUR name in the record books.

I think DMute is cheating and should not be allowed.
You need luck in games.

New record set.....

Paul Stevens (Toadrot) 11 hours, 49 minutes , 20 seconds
Guillaume Bastard (Plague) 11 hours, 7 seconds
Paul Stevens (Toadrot) 8 hours, 20 minutes, 11 seconds
Guillaume Bastard (Petal) 5 hours, 7 minutes, 8 seconds
Paul Stevens (Buzzzz) 4 hours, 36 minutes, 7 seconds

That is 4-1/2 hours of hard work.

Guillaume and I have very contrasting styles. I imagine
that someone could combine the better parts of our
games to sythesize an even speedier solution. And neither
of us takes advantage of many of the tools in the dungeon
such as magic boxes or Ful Bombs.

All these recordings are available at:

www.geocities.com/stevens_madison in the binaries area.

I wonder if anyone else than Paul or me are trying to compete to this race?
I'm sure some of you can at least finish the game with one hero, that is not that hard.
The hard thing is to finish the fastest...

But as Paul released a version with proper skill values, a new competition should be opened; so go to work and get your name in this new hall of champions!

I played CSB a couple of times on my amiga and it was darn hard LOL i couldn't make it through the first level..I will try this out tho and see how i do...Oh you know what i loved? The chaos strikes back editor...i redid all my champions photos to have the color that they were red, blue green and yellow hehehe

You DON'T have to do Ros. At the Ku corbum place, infront of the pressure pad there is a pit and it is fake. The pit has a pressure plate on it which activates the Ros corbum pits. This allows you to get the Ros corbum and the Ku corbum at the same time!!! This should take a quarter of the time of the race. So you don't have to do any of Ros at all inclueding before and after the DDD

Geez, I'd love to view these, especially Buzzzz. Unfortunately the links are down. If anyone could reup them, or mail them to me, I'd highly appreciate it.
Thanks.

I have these carefully preserved. If nobody can find a place
where they are available publically then I will post them
myself.

I never would have believed that the game could be played
so quickly. Not that the Ku/Ros trick is out of the hat perhaps
we will find a new record-holder.

I've been trying to compete but i keep getting killed, so i wanted to know if i could save the game in different slots. This should mean you can still watch the game, but in parts, right?

Re: Race to the Ful Ya Pit

That would definitely be cheating. The rules do not allow
such shenanigans.

But.....I will let you in on a little secret. If you are using version
7.2 of CSBWin then you can save the game, restart from
the saved game, and paste the two record files together
quite seamlessly. Not easily.

The Demo 'movies' that I release with the program are made
in this way, because it is very tedious to play a game all the
way through without any mistakes. The resulting record file
contains some markers to indicate that you have done this
so that you cannot cheat for the purpose of the contest.

So.....If you wish to do this (and I think it is OK because we
will get to see another approach to playing the game) then
go ahead. Save the original savegame. Save all the record
files. I will help you paste them together. It should work.

Another question, are you allowed to train in the fist prison where you choose your characters by killing the rock piles and mummies? Its against any specific rules.........

I had never considered training in the Prison. There is no
specific rule against it. Go for it. We need a new champion.
Guillaume and I have been the record-holders for too long.

Did you examine my solution to the Couatls?. Firstly,
you do not need to enter the room that requires a
ZoKathRa to open the doors. All the Coatls in that
room can be left alone and they will not bother you.
You need only face a few Couatls in the large room just
north of the Ruby key room. I don't think I did this but
it might be worth a try to:

1) Stop time. Magic box or Eye-of-Time.
2) Grab the winged key
3) open the door to the Ruby key room
4) Stop time again as necessary
5) Grab the chest with the key in it.
6) Jump into the pit that leads to the basement.

In that way, you need only fight with two or three
Couatls.

Paul
prsteven@facstaff.wisc.edu

P.S. Those Couatls used to be my biggest problem, too.

Thankyou. I also watched your game and realised my style is way more risky because rather than fighting i side step most badguys. And one more thing, do you need 4 keys of b to get the topaz door or just the lockpicks?, this would seriously change the time

Re: Race to the Ful Ya Pit

I have always collected four Keys-of-B. If anyone knows better
please let us know.

They are not very difficult to collect. There are five in the game.
In general, each of the "Ways" has a key that you must pass
by on your way to other places. The trick is to remember to
back up a couple squares and pick them up so you don't have
to go back a second time.

And remember, the rules allow you to save the game and use
DMute to locate that fifth B-Key. (Some people don't like this
rule....sorry). On a couple of my early attempts at the record
I took advantage of this rule and restarted the game several
times until the item I needed was in an accessible place. Later
I got very confident that I could win the game quickly without
such help.

Good luck to you. I hope to see my record fall. Guillaume and I
had styles that were extremely different. It will be interesting
to see yours.

Cheers. My latest atempt got me the 3 needed keys but I didn't get the keys of b and i got killed by hellhounds. And is it possible to get past the poison machines (using lockpicks) beyond the topaz door? or do you need the topaz key to win. Also, its really hard to the keys of b from KU and NETA.

AHHHHHH!! So close but so far. I had got the NETA corbum and was heading for ROS but I couldn't get that pit to open. I hit the hidden switch then killed a skeleton behind the door and used the eye (are you supposed use anything special on it?) but it didn't open. So I headed for DAIN and was killed by a fire elemental. Gutted (sob) :( But I had done all over the game so far in about 45 minutes hehehe i might just be able to complete it in 1 hour. Oh well, time to start again............
PS Do you want me to send you my latest attempt?

You don't asbsolutely have to have the Topaz Key. I have gotten
through there. But you have to be quick and you will get hurt.

Did you see how I managed those teleporters leading into
the four "Ways"? I put down some sort of object in the
first teleporter. When it disappears, I know the teleporters are
active. Then, an instant later, I know that I can safely step
forward into the second teleporter or step all the way through,
avoiding the teleporters entirely. This is how I get to the B-Keys.

The ROS pit. See this forum.....an old topic. "Level Two Pit".
You have to do things just right. It is not difficult, bu it is
a little complicated.

Finish in one hour??????? Yes....I want to see this.

The approx time is about 1 hour and 15 minutes. But wait for the official time from Paul. I hope other people start to compete, its actually not as hard as you think if you use all the right tricks. Another thing, if you decide to do KU (it might be easier than ROS), to kill Mongor freeze life him below a pit and jump on his head hehehehe he won't know what hit him!

The official time is 1 hour 47 minutes 28.8 seconds. It is
longer than the actual time played because while the party
is sleeping time goes ten times as fast.

The movie is at:
www.geocities.com/stevens_madison
in the binaries area named CSBMovie9.zip.

Christophe will probaably add it to dmweb if you
can wait that long. You can watch it in five minutes
with Quick Play mode.

He took advantage of the opportunity to train his
hero in the Prison before entering the dungeon.

I watched the entire game at normal speed. It was a
lot of fun. I learned many, many tricks. In spite of the
VERY AMAZING time of less than two hours, I am sure
someone will break this record because there were a
lot of mistakes. For example, he went through the DDD
area many times instead of just once. And he had rather
bad luck locating the lockpicks to get through the Topaz
Key door.

I would have bet that nobody could do this. But I have
seen it with my own eyes.

So....For the record:

Paul Stevens (Toadrot) 11 hours, 49 minutes , 20 seconds
Guillaume Bastard (Plague) 11 hours, 7 seconds
Paul Stevens (Toadrot) 8 hours, 20 minutes, 11 seconds
Guillaume Bastard (Petal) 5 hours, 7 minutes, 8 seconds
Paul Stevens (Buzzzz) 4 hours, 36 minutes, 7 seconds
Allan Bracegirdle(Petal) 1 hour, 47 minutes, 28.8 seconds

Here is the movie. I replaced "Allan" by "Anthony" in the Credits.txt file inside the archive.

Anthony Bracegirdle (Petal) 1 hour, 47 minutes, 28.8 seconds

Less than 2 hours, very impressive!
