As Hexcon spotted, it is certainly replacing the 'magic footprints' spell.

This item would have been more useful in the beta version where there is some tricky part resembling a little the "snake" maze or "clockwise"; it is also one item that appears on any magic map (dain activated) so that navigating within such mazes would have been easier.

Now, about the disappearing of the magic footprints spell, maybe it was not good looking on the different new graphics (thicket, caves). Then it was replaced.
