Did any one else in the UK (or indeed in the world) notice the auroral activity last night and the night before? From the latitude here in Sheffield, this is a rare occurance and I had never seen it before until last night after spending hours glued to the window. Just a fleeting few seconds: it must have been a lot better further north.
Maybe I should have spent the time playing DM
We live at 45 degress north lattitude. Three nights ago the
arora was straight overhead. Very unusual. Covered maybe
30 degrees of the sky. No color.....just white and wavering and
changing shape over a period of ten seconds or so.
Must be a lot of solar activity. The aurora I saw had no colour either, just a band or arc above the horizon that slowly came into view. Saw some bright meteors too!
We had perfect conditions to see it in Ottawa (except that is was very cold, winter is almost there). It's the first time I've seen one. I stayed almost one hour outside Sunday night around 7, and then again tuesday night around 11 for a wonderful show. Huge green bands moving across the sky in all directions, sometimes very bright at their end near the horizon.
hehe... talking of all things skyward, remember to look out for the Leonids around 19th November. I can probably accurately forecast it to be cloudy...
For anybody interested, there is a severe geomagnetic storm in progress, and I have just witnessed the most amazing activity: the sky was on fire! Get outside and look up!
You need a bit of luck too: no clouds helps. It can be hit and miss, the activity tends to come in cycles, but at about 2230 GMT (Sheffield UK), there was a huge blue/green arc across the sky, with shafts and pillars radiating out of it, very bright, and a large red cloud that extended almost overhead.
