Which game to play now?

Post by ZnOOZer »

It's so cool to see this game still living. Played the original DM all the time when it was new but haven't played for a long time now. Would like to try it again but don't know where to start. I see alot of other similar games has been made.

So which game to play now. RTC, CSB or any clone?

For the easiest to install and play and most faithful to
the original.

Beware....I am biased...it is my version.

I recommend RTC (not v0.29, it's buggy; Bugfix-release is supposed to be released tomorrow, I hear), since it contains both DM and CSB and, to me, runs better than CSBwin and is faithful enough to the original. Besides, it's as easy to install as CSBwin.

I recommend both: play CSBWin and play RTC and make your own mind up. CSBWin has both DM and CSB too, plus a host of other new dungeons. For me, CSBWin is the better and IS more faithful to the original.

I've used CSBwin and had no problems... I've never actually tried RTC, though.

I play both.

I like CSBWin because of the "record-playback" feature, I find it great, it should be a standard for all modern games IMHO (currently only fps games such as HL, quake or doom get that kind of feature).

I like RTC because it looks less "retro" to me. It's hard to watch myself in a mirror and say, I really play a game that was released in '87 :P

Oh come on, Paul, you know what I mean :)

You don't play a game because it feels old, you play it because it feels good!
(and I play yours because it feels good)

Utterly weird! How do you work that out? Other than a few minor cosmetic diffrences, RTC looks exactly the same as the original game -- how does it look "less retro"? If anything, CSBWin looks 'newer' due to it's Windows menu system.

Ah, guess CBSWin is the game to play, downloading right now ;-)
Hmm, read somewhere about some 3d DM. Don't remember where though. Any clues what game I'm thinking of?

I definitely agree with PaulH - get both CSBWin and RTC (v0.30 out now), then you can play custom dungeons for both formats.

You have to watch out for compatibility problems as RTC is not forward-compatible (e.g. you must run Sukumvit's Labyrinth with 0.28 ) and CSBWin is not backward-compatible (e.g. you can't play Conflux II with an old version of CSBWin that does not support the advanced features used in the dungeon).

Also you may find you like RTCs improved monster AI and auto-modifying difficulty (according to party strength), and / or the "crypto-fascist" spellbook system.

Des >> Ok, thanks for the info. Guess I'll have to try more then two versions now :-)
