Riddles :)

Post by Ameena »

As per request, here are the riddles from the quiz I held a year or two ago in EQ...about three of them related to EQ so obviously they aren't included here :).
If you want to guess some answers, best to e-mail them to me or something (ekky84@hotmail.com), rather than post up here and spoil it for anyone else who may want to guess :).

1.)
Winter's gift upon the land
Does not linger in the hand.

2.)
Constant compass in the night,
Helps the sailors in their plight
In formations or alone,
Different patterns, some well-known.

3.)
Feathered but wingless,
Sent to flight,
Its prey required
In line of sight

4.)
All the colours
Band together.
Want to see them?
Watch the weather.

5.)
End of the journey
Taken by all.
Some just fade,
While others fall.

6.)
He dwells alone in open net,
Awaiting prey that he can get.

7.)
Running free across the plains,
Flashing hooves and flowing manes.
Yet "horse" is not the name I seek,
For these are dark and light, and meek.

8.)
Not death, or night, not underground,
But a dark where weird images are found.

9.)
Strongest out of all its kind,
It loves, it breaks, but has no mind.

10.)
Largest of the mighty nine,
Also bears a name divine.
A myth about a happy face,
Yet storms rage all about this place.

11.)
Mighty essence of the world,
At least, in any myth unfurled.
Dragons born and battles fought,
Opposite of science thought.

12.)
Tears may flow
And cheeks may glow.
Although not a disease, observed,
It seems contagious, when it's heard.

13.)
Dead...or not? It's hard to call
When this comes drifting through the wall.

14.)
Who is it that has your voice,
Your eyes, your ears, your every choice?
Who goes, like you, from womb to grave,
And also, as you, does behave?

15.)
What follows you in any light,
But disappears in blackest night?

16.)
Spotted, striped, or simply plain,
Most of them dislike the rain.
Well-equipped for their usual task,
Stealth's their usual, cunning mask.

17.)
Ugly guardian, made of stone,
May sit with friends or sit alone.
Although they never move, they may
Gush water, each and every day.

Have fun, and remember, please don't post up any spoilers :).
If you want any more riddles or have some for me (please! :D), let me know :).

This is a paraphrased riddle from my DM story, Gothmog was hinting at a weapon/magic they found. in the context you would guess what it is right away.

"It topples nations, buries oceans, erodes mountains, withers any who seek to oppose it…but without action to back it up, it is useless, wasted…"

Just sounds like a variation of...

This thing all things devours.
Birds, beasts, trees, flowers,
Gnaws iron, bites steel,
Grinds hard stone to meal.
Slays king, ruins town,
And beats high mountain down.

...which I already know the answer to...as should anyone who's read "The Hobbit". :).
And therefore I presume the item they found was a Time Ring (or is it Ring of Time)...

lol, you got it....i'm guessing Gothmog is well read : )

and nope, it was nto the eye of time, i was jsut a blue box...though the page count will be about 80 when i'm done, i will onyl be done to the end of level 2...i have a few vague ideas for onwards, but I wasnt' plannign on puting the energy into writing a DM novel so i will tidy up what I have and let people wade throguh it if they like (unabridged : ) ) and be left wanderign what might have been, if they care : )

Made up some more...warning - I made these up as I went so they may be a bit crap :P.

1.)
Anger, passion, rage, or lust,
Cause of sandy desert dust,
Heart of life or bringer of pain,
Strong, yet killed by falling rain.

2.)
Creature small, not hard to find.
Follow his trail as it does wind.
He does not need to find a home,
For his comes with him as he does roam.

3.)
Often said to be bringers of death,
Often they have magical breath.
Mighty, majestic, ruling the sky,
If, indeed, they have wings to fly.

4.)
Often proving a trouble most dire,
Water and Air may ally with Fire.
One does howl and one does fall,
While the third strikes with an echoing call.

More may come, sooner or later...

Some more for you...

1.)
It cannot break, it cannot bend,
It cannot rise or fall.
Bright orbs of light it oft contains,
And lies above us all.

2.)
Fear and dread, they dwell within,
They grasp you like a vine.
Just when you think you've found peace,
May come this dark equine.

3.)
Faster than a falcon's dive
This tail of pain does fly.
Its sound, a snap, born from its speed,
Oft answered by a cry.

4.)
This thing, a presence, has a brother.
Items and objects are the first's mother.
Its sibling, an absence, ever existed.
The other came after, has ever resisted.
These "brothers", however, are not truly so,
Opposite they are, as fire and snow.

(Apologies if that one's a bit kind of crap/vague/weird/stupid etc...oh, and someone pointed out to me that there's another possible answer, but I can't be arsed to change the riddle so if you give me either that'll do :P)

My dad has this "learn Russian" book, and near the back it has some riddles. Three of them are easy but there are two we just have NO clue on. The answers aren't given anywhere in the book and it's been annoying us. Does anyone have a clue?

Two rings, two ends, and a nail in the middle - what is it?

Two stand upright, two lie horizontal, the fifth goes to and fro, the sixth leads the way, and the seventh sings a song - what is it?

I repeat - we DO NOT have the answers to these, so I'm afraid I can be of no help with hints. If anyone has any idea, post! :D

I think the second one could be the start of a music sheet, with a treble clef

But a music stave has five lines, not two (if that's what you're referring to by the horizontal things). And what could be going to and fro or leading the way? I suppose the conductor in an orchestra leads the way...

baidana - hauberk - 14th -
Comes from the Arab word "badan". This armor was called besermen baidan in the Zadonschina, but existed in Russia from 1200. A form of armor made of metal rings that differs from the kol'chuga in the size and form of the rings. The baidana's rings are larger and look like washers rather than wire. They were flat-forged or stamped from sheet metal. Some of the rings had inscriptions. The rings were either fixed one upon the other, or on a nail or spike (?) resulting in a fairly stable joint. (Sloan)

or

The berdysh is shown in this illustration. A peculiarly Russian long, broad axe was called berdysh. Its blade, zhelezko, was long and curved. It sat on a long handle, which had an iron binding or vtok on the lower end. The full berdysh had a 60 - 80 cm blade. The weapon doubled as the rest for a firearm.Berdyshi were used only by footsoldiers. But a shorter version was carried by mounted streltzi by means of a shoulder strap through two rings.. In the 16th century berdyshi were in wide use in the militia forces as well as the streltzi.

could be this one as it has two rings, two ends, and if you hang it up.. it would have a nail in the middle

A face maybe? Two ears, two eyes, a tongue, a nose, a mouth...

@Cow: Your research is impressive but I think it's too literal -- riddles generally are a bit more lateral than that.

I've been thinking about these for a while and have some ideas but they're not quite right. Will think on it some more.

Hmm yeah, maybe :D. And Zyx's idea about the face sounds pretty good, if you count the tongue as being part of the face (seeing as it's internal rather than external). Well, unless anyone manages to come up with something better, that's the best so far hehe :).

Hi. Here's a few riddles I've done for Dm Java:-

A voice to one who cannot speak?

Tears for one who cannot weep?

Strength to one who is so weak?

Lasting thoughts to forever keep?

Give me something I can use,
Give me something I must not lose.
Give me something to find my way,
within these walls I cannot stay.

And a few rhymes:-

Within these walls you wll find,
puzzles that will test the mind.
Only be wisdom
can you proceed
Solve them wisely
you will succeed.

A coin you must give,
but not any will do.
One from a Dragon that lived long ago.
But tale has told that this Dragon lives on,
in a tomb lain with bones
in which Chaos roams....

Just a few things I used in a dungeon a while ago....

A voice to one who cannot speak? - horn?
Tears for one who cannot weep? - water? Blue gem?
Strength to one who is so weak? - stength potion?
Lasting thoughts to forever keep? - scroll?

Give me something I can use,
Give me something I must not lose.
Give me something to find my way,

Ahh I wasn't sure if the first fourlines were one riddle or four separate ones, but the way they were phrased sounded like one four-liner.

Soz, I haven't posted a reply. Making stuff for Dmjava has kept me busy. All the answers are right except the "Tears for one who cannot weep". It was an orb from Eob that I reworked called Phoenix Tear. Soz about that, but the Blue Gem was a good answer.
