Importing DM characters - Sorry and apologies.

Post by Andy Mort »

Hi again all, thank you (gambit?) for answering my question in the DM forum.

I'm really sorry to ask this question because you have probably had to answer this umpteen times before but i would be really grateful for someone's help.

I am playing DM and CSB for windows and I am having trouble importing my DM characters into CSB. I'm currently at the Screamer generator on DM level 4 building up my guys to some pretty hard Mofo's so that eventually i can play CSB with them. I have tried to import my save to see if it works so i know that all the level training of my characters (which you have to admit is pretty boring/repetetive) will not be in vain.

I have copied my csbgame.dat into the relevant folder and I press the utility button on CSB and i keep getting "saved game error", DOH!

However one interesting thing to come out of this is that if i load CSB and click on resume and load up my DM save, it loads and i am in DM but with CSB items!! eg my sabre has turned into a Biter, all my gold coins are now GOR coins, my drumstick turns into a shank and my bow is now a claw bow etc.

Any help on this matter is greatly appreciated, thanks.

The reason for the second part is that the graphics.dat holds item names and graphics, so that the DM dungeon will have the alternate names associated

The reason for the first error is less clear...Paul Stevens could perhaps shed light on this, that should work!

I press the utility button on CSB and i keep getting "saved game error"
What version of CSBwin saved that game?
What version of CSBwin is trying to load that game?

You press the 'UTILITY' button and get "Saved Game Error"? Really?
Or did you press another button after that? Like "LOAD SAVED GAME".
Or "MAKE NEW ADVENTURE". Or anything else?

Hi Paul

Thanks for getting back to me

Erm...Chaos Strikes Back for Windows version 9.8 executable RAR file 1.22MB, i think that is the version.....sorry i'm not very technical. This is the version that is has saved that game and is the version that is trying to load that game.

I press the 'UTILITY' button and it says ‘PLEASE CHOOSE A SAVE GAME SLOT’ ie CSBGAME, CSBGAME2, CSBGAME3, CSBGAME4, so I press CSBGAME because my saved game is called csbgame.dat and I get the message ‘SAVED GAME ERROR’.

I have saved csbgame.dat into modules/chaos strikes back-atari/original CSB

Thanks

Thanks for the details. I just tried it with version 9.8.

I entered the DM dungeon, selected a party, played a couple of minutes,
and saved the game as CSBGAME.DAT. Then I moved the CSBGAME.DAT to
the CSB folder (where the MINI.DAT) is located), started CSBwin, pressed
'UTILITY', and selected CSBGAME.DAT. That worked just fine for me.

I need to know the exact version of CSBwin. It is in the 'Help/About' menu.

Also, if you edited the CSBGAME.DAT file then that would break it because
the current editor is much newer. In that case you will need the latest
version oif CSBwin, also.

If none of what I say seems to explain your problem, then try the latest
CSBwin
http://www.dianneandpaul.net/CSBwin/CSBwin98v42.rar
is a good choice.
If that does not work then you need to ship the CSBGAME.DAT
file to me for analysis.

Hi Paul

I have downloaded the latest version CSBwin98v42 and it has worked a treat, phew. A thousand thank you's, may your torch always be lit, may your fireballs always be full strength and may your food always be dragon steaks.

Regards,
