Zo Kath Ra to map while traveling
I didn't see anyone mention this, so I thought I would.
A little practice will eventually get you to the upper levels of the "Power Level Zo Kath Ra" spell.
It can be dropped on the ground, and it will last for a very long time,
depending on the "power" level used.
On "less important" trips, where you simply want to remember where you've been,
or where you're going, a lesser power will soon dissipate.
(example: the room at the bottom of the multiple scorpion section)
(If you don't get in a hurry, you'll know when you've "triggered"
the next "clockwise" area)
And yes, I know, the magical footprint spell can do the same thing,
but those dumb yellowjackets/bees can irritate you as you do it.
P.S. When I was really "into" DM, I enjoyed the "see through walls" spell.
I'd keep peeking through all the walls WHILE traveling the "clockwise" section)

They can disappear. But in my humble opinion
it has nothing to do with their 'power'. They
can be victims of the 'garbage collection'.
If you have too many objects of a given
type (weapons, misc, etc), the ones not
marked as 'important' (like keys) are subject
to removal from the game. Especially those
things not on the party's level of the dungeon.

I used to dropped like a quadrillion of those spells, all along the way,
so I could just follow the "bread crumb" trail back to certain areas.
Sometimes I'd travel back and I'd find a bunch of them missing.
Perhaps I'm incorrect, and it's just what one or two of you are suggesting happened.
Hmmm. I'll have something to check, won't I?
(In the meantime, I apologize if I am absolutely incorrect. )

P the S... I've dropped a number of "first power level" ZO KATH RA spells around my latest game. I'll check from time to time.
Boris, Gando, Tiggy, and Wuuf (the LADY?) are my picks this time.
I got used to this team, years back, and even did some cool "picture edit" stuff with them on some edition of DM2, I believe.

zokathra
zokathra doesn't disappear in my experience (I played the original ST version when it came out, like a lot of others here)... using them to help find your way around is among the oldest of DM tips.
You won't have to drop a zillion of them everywhere if you only drop them near junctions (you don't need one on every square of a hallway, for example - just one at each end of a hallway).
edit: Actually, I guess it depends on how extensively you're using them, and also the dungeon itself... In conflux I sometimes used them to mark more than one path; I remember developing some kind of system like dropping more than one to tell me which path was being marked, because they tended to cross one another sometimes.

I dropped first level Zo Kath Ra spells, this time around, and they haven't disappeared yet.
It must have been the possibly staggering number I used that caused them to "show up missing" earlier.
Hee, hee, I actually marked "exactly" where to go, step by step, for the fun of it. I must have dumped a "gigazillion" of them on the floors.
I had fun on the clockwise room once. I dropped on on every square. Looked like a carnival in there.
