What was the reason for so many being on at the same time?
Did a new DM type game come out?
Was there a FULL MOON?

I have been wondering that myself, and the I thought wouldn't it be cool if we tried to get everyone logged in at one time to see how high we could get it.

We do have 1193 registered users, whether or not some of these are double ups of people who have forgotten their log in, or just people that have lost interest/time to visit, or other reason more interesting than I can make up at the moment...

But my guess for the high users online is...a university computer lab/class visiting the site.

Probably a bot (such as Google or Yahoo search engines) got confused and made 100 petitions for information - it really is quite easy when you're a computer

the number of users goes down when the Admins do clean up, people who have never posted and have not shown up online in months to years are often deleted, as it is assumed that they were either trying to post smut and failed or that they were just curious and eventually lost interest... So the number of users should be fairly close to the number of semi active and fully active people, who either post or just lurk, to date.

The fact that so many register as online at once could simply be a database glitch or a fluke. To my knowledge there were no specific events on that date that would warrant that number.

I would go with a bot requesting every page or something. Gambit put a spider block at the root I believe

it's spam bots and search spiders, that's all.

Well, isn't it posible too confirm this somehow? I mean if we have a average of 10 visitors before and after the record, or that the jump is too high between the runnerup and the highest, then it is more likely that there are a glitch. But isn't there anyway to check some kind of log?

From one thing too another.. I agree, would be fun to break that record if someone sets a date
