Sports to lose weight

I want to get back into shape and lose about sixty pounds. What games or sports do you think would be best for me to partake in? I like martial arts and hope to be getting into one, but I'm open to other suggestions!!! Your input is greatly appreciated.

You can read hundreds of different exercise tips regarding weight loss, but a rough guide is 3500 calories = 1 pound.
Of course it's not quite as clear cut as that, as you're burning calories all the time doing various things... but the best way to lose weight is to simply take in less calories each day. Burning 3500 calories takes an enormous amount of exercise, but i don't say that to discourage you. Try combining the two.

I was a big lad at one point, and found that taking in a few hundred less calories and walking for 1-2 hours every day made the weight fall of me. Fairly quickly too... Don't go crazy though, as taking in less than 1500 calories a day is probably dangerous. I'm not saying this from any scientific standpoint, just personal experience.

if you like martial arts... Go for it. Just don't expect that this alone will do the job.

Walk an hour per day. Obviously, more is better. Cut back on the calories.
Eat every good food you have always eaten....just less.
Keep a graph of your daily weight so you can spot short/long-term trends.
Feedback is all important. Don't attempt to lose more than four pounds
per month....or even less....just make sure the trend is downward...
however slowly. You can do it and you will be proud of yourself.

Just to back up what Paul said... Keeping a record of you progress is a good idea.
I did this (weekly though) and found that it really spurred me on.

Also... The thing about not trying to lose too much, too fast is good advice too. I did this (allowing myself nothing fatty AT ALL) and after a while it gets to be a real slog and soon found my old ways creeping back in.

Daily! Not a 'record'. A graph. So your eye can separate the noise from
the trend during a week. And see progress over several months.
Accurate feedback is all important. Visual feedback is essential.

See an example of a successful 18-pound loss by my daughter:

And the many years of follow-up!

Walking one hour and a half every day is good for me. Swimming too. I do not like jogging and biking.

Is a graph not a record? I was speaking in broad terms.
I suppose it depends on the individual, but i found a weekly record made more of an impact as the daily loss was negligible.
Whatever works for you...

Is a graph not a record?
No. But a 'record' is not necessarily a 'graph'.
I was speaking in narrow terms.

I remember swimming being a big deal for weight loss. I was part of a swim team that met every weekend and trained for a few hours. A girl who joined us a bit on the chubby side, was rather slender by end of the year. It was quite impressive. I often think about going back to it, but without the motivators to say "do this, do that" I don't seem to do well, or at least have some company..

I enjoyed swimming with buddies years ago. 1500 meters every working day at lunch time.
Smmmiing alone is such a bore, I gave up, that's too bad, it is, I beleive the best sport for health.

I agree that walking is a great way to burn calories - I don't like to run as I find it harder on my body. Swimming is another good one, although been a few years since I did that. With summer here, perhaps now is the time :)

Rye Gon Gin, sex burns a tremendous amount of calories, so does house work :) I too suffer from weight gain, and my solution is called the, no reward system. when you feel hungry after a lot of workout, don't have that beer, don't do anything but sleep and drink some water, eat same time meals, when you're hungry, SLEEP. that is my plan to burn off 20 pounds. most people when they work out get hungry and then indulge, instead hit the sack if you can.
