Hi,
My English is bad, sorry.
I would like to know if someone has translated the Atari and PC versions: Chaos Strikes Back?
(French, Deutsch, Spanish, Italian, Russian or another languages)
Thank you.

I think the only officially ported translation is Japanese.

There are multilanguage versions on Amiga French/English/German.

Hi,
Thank you for your answers.
I would like to translate this game. PC version and if it is possible Atari version.

There is no official version of CSB on PC to translate. However, you may want to translate CSBwin. You would have to make your changes in the source code (downloadable from http://dmweb.free.fr/?q=node/851) and then recompile the program.
If you want to translate the Atari ST version, you may start from the ReDMCSB source code available here: viewtopic.php?t=29805

Hi ChristopheF,
I thank you for your help.
I am very bad at computer. I translate games only.
I have windows 7.
I have Chaos Strikes Back for Windows x86-32 2015-12-13 and Atari version.
I downloaded:
ReDMCSB_Release2.7z
Tool-DataFileDecoder20.zip

I can not run these tools.
I tried with command prompt and Atari (Steem).
I do not find the source code files.
I thought there was a editor of game CSBWIN. (As screenshot)
I see some words and texts in "CSBwin.exe" file. I can translate words or sentences. Missing texts.. And surely a picture of the beginning (Enter in: Prison or Resume).

Thank you for your patience.

In order to fully translate the game, you will need to modify C source code (to update the texts themselves and also some hard coded coordinates to print the texts based on their length) and compile the program again. You should get help from a programmer if you don't know how to make these changes.
ReDMCSB_Release2.7z contains all the Atari ST source code (in the SOURCE folder). You will find all text strings from the executable file in there. Search for double quotes characters " in *.C and *.H files to find all the strings you would need to translate.

Also you will need to update graphics and text data stored in graphics.dat file.
Tool-DataFileDecoder20.zip contains Visual Basic scripts to run on Windows (not Atari). It will help you decode the content of graphics.dat, but will not help you rebuild a modified file. For that purpose, you should take a look at this tool instead: http://dmweb.free.fr/?q=node/913 (I have never tried myself to create a customized graphics.dat file so I can't help you much there).

Yes, because I do not am very bad at computer. But, I am hopeless in computing.

Yes, I saw "SOURCE" folder. I searched (looked) for this sentence "there is only one level here". I opened all the files in these folders with a hexadecimal editor:
BOOTSECT===> Nothing.
ENGINE===> Nothing.
MAKE===> Nothing.
START.PRG===> Nothing.
SWOOSH.IMG===> Nothing.

There is a lot of text, but the sentences of game are missing.
Thanks.

There are strings to translate in the dungeon.dat file too. You need to use a dungeon editor but I'm not sure there is one where you can easily modify texts.

It's too technical for me.
It's a shame, because I would have liked to translate this game.

I think of one thing.
If a person can extract all text and graphics files (where there are texts). This person sends me all files. I translate all files. And I send all files to this person.

An easy and dirty way, is to patch the rtc file using an hexadecimal editor.
This allows modifying text.
The editor will show every string of ASCI characters and allow to change it by whatever string you want of equal length or shorter.

I can not find "rtc" file. (Atari and CSBwin).

I found some tools to translate CSBwin:
Image

I can not find the pointers in "CSBwin.exe" file.
Someone can help me, please ?
Thanks.

For translators. (CSBwin)
The graphics :
Download "Tool-ADGE.net_.bin_.20090308.rar".
Open "graphics.dat" file. (game folder)
List of files to translate:
1, 4, 5, 6, 10, 27, 30, 31, 32, 40, 122.

The Champions and 1 text.
Download "Tool-CSBuild251.zip".
Open "dungeon.dat" file. (game folder)

The texts :
Open "CSBwin.exe" file with a hexadecimal editor.

Hi Paul Stevens,
Thank you for your answer.
Yes, It is "CSBwin.exe" File. I translated this file. (See screenshot)
Image
There are two problems:
A) Pointers. I do not find the pointers to have a clean translation.
B)Problem of "compound" sentences. For example (see screenhot):
Image
I) Sentence (green): PATRICK JUST GAINED A DRUIDE LEVEL
French = PATRICK JUST GAINED A LEVEL DRUIDE (PATRICK GAGNE UN NIVEAU DE DRUIDE.) Problem.
II) Sentence (blue): PATRICK MUMBLES A MEANINGLESS SPELL. (PATRICK MARMONNE UN SORT INCOHERENT.) No problem.

I'm sorry. I do not understand the problem with the green sentence 1.
"Patrick just gained a druide level" does not look like a 'compound' sentence.

Here is the code that produces that line:

Code: Select all

  PrintLinefeed();
  QuePrintLines(color = (UI8)(d.Byte1386[chIdx]), d.CH16482[chIdx].name);
  QuePrintLines(color, " JUST GAINED A ");
  QuePrintLines(color, d.Pointer16596[basicSkill]); //"FIGHTER", "NINJA", etc
  QuePrintLines(color, " LEVEL");
And this is typical.....the strings are scattered about in the code itself.
Any 'pointers' exist in the machine-language instructions!

The file named "translation.txt'" could be used to translate if the code were modified
as follows:

Code: Select all

  PrintLinefeed();
  QuePrintLines(color = (UI8)(d.Byte1386[chIdx]), d.CH16482[chIdx].name);
  QuePrintLines(color, Translate(" JUST GAINED A "));
  QuePrintLines(color, Translate(d.Pointer16596[basicSkill])); //"FIGHTER", "NINJA", etc
  QuePrintLines(color, Translate(" LEVEL"));
But, of course, the noun/verb/adjective sequence might be entirely wrong for
many languages. Nevertheless, I think this is about as far as I am
willing to go.

Otherwise......the most flexible solution....
If you were to create a French (for example) version of CSBwin ("CSBwinFR.exe")
I would be willing to help and would try to maintain it and publish it with my
other versions.

My English is bad, sorry.
I write: "compound" sentences. Because sentence has 4 pieces: Name(1), sentence(2), skills(3) and level(4).
Sentence (green): [PATRICK](1) [JUST GAINED A](2) [DRUIDE](3) [LEVEL](4)
French translation: [PATRICK](1) [JUST GAINED A](2) [NIVEAU DE](4) |DRUIDE.](3)
I thought find a string that makes up this sentence (CSBwin.exe file with hexadecimal editor).
For example:
%(1)%(2)%(3)%(4). And edit: %(1)%(2)%(4)%(3)
Of course, It is not correct.
Other example:
LSL1 VGA Sierra game:
"Hey, everybody!! This weirdo just bought a %s-weight, %s-gauge, %s-flavored, %s, %s, %s, %s, %s, %s small-sized xxxxxx!!!"

AVIS à nos clients ! Ce MONSIEUR vient d'acheter un xxxxxx %s, %s, %s, %s, %s, %s, %s, %s, %s et taille ultra petit !!
In this sentence, I can edit "xxxxx" place.
And this is typical.....the strings are scattered about in the code itself.
Any 'pointers' exist in the machine-language instructions!
Yes, but there is a pointers table (before or after the text) or to be dispersed in a file.
I can not find the pointers in CSBwin.exe file.
I am bad in computer. I only translate.

Otherwise......the most flexible solution....
If you were to create a French (for example) version of CSBwin ("CSBwinFR.exe")
I would be willing to help and would try to maintain it and publish it with my other versions.
Yes, thank you. I translated these files:
dungeon.dat ==> 100 %.
graphics.dat ==> 99 %... It remains a picture to translate. But I can not read the message on this picture (122).
CSBwin.exe===> 80 %. There are still English words that I have not seen in CSBwin file. I see these English words because I play at CSBwin to see if I have not created any bugs.

I can send you these 3 files?

I see no reason for the compiler to produce such a 'pointer table'. I believe you

I have received your three files. Looks good.

Do I understand correctly that you have attempted to modify the
executable file "CSBwin.exe"?

I will make no attempt to help you with that sort of hacking.
If you want to change the executable, you should go to the source code
and locate the strings that you want to translate. It should be
relatively easy to find them. Send me their location along with
the desired translation. I will put a conditional execution around them
and produce an updated CSBwin.exe with an option in the command line.
Perhaps something like "French". The code would look like this:

Code: Select all

        if (option_French) printf("Oui");
        else printf("Yes");
In many cases it may be possible to use the translation.txt file to do this
work. In that case, the code would look like this:

Code: Select all

        printf(Translate("Yes"));

No, I translated only English text of game. But, if it is hacking. I destroy this CSBwin.exe file that I translated.
I apologize. I did not know it was Hacking, sorry.

I downloaded: Clone-CSBwin-SourceCode-12_100.zip. This is this source code file?
There are a lot of files.
Or do I have to create (encode) a file?
For example:
PrintLinefeed();
QuePrintLines(color = (UI8)(d.Byte1386[chIdx]), d.CH16482[chIdx].name);
QuePrintLines(color, " JUST GAINED A ");
QuePrintLines(color, d.Pointer16596[basicSkill]); //"FIGHTER", "NINJA", etc
QuePrintLines(color, " LEVEL");

Translation:
PrintLinefeed();
QuePrintLines(color = (UI8)(d.Byte1386[chIdx]), d.CH16482[chIdx].name);
QuePrintLines(color, Translate(" GAGNE UN "));
QuePrintLines(color, Translate(d.Pointer16596[basicSkill])); //"VOLEUR", "NINJA", etc
QuePrintLines(color, Translate(" NIVEAU"));

I am lost because I do not understand.
I do not know how to program (computing).

You are close....The source code does indeed contain many files.
You should be able to search all the files whose name ends with
either ".h" or ".cpp". For example, you might search them for
the string "JUST GAINED A". You would make a note of the
file-name and the line number within the file. Send that and
your desired translation to me.

On a linux machine you could use the 'grep' command.
The Windows browser has a primitive search function that
might work. I, myself, cannot tolerate the Windows browser and
I use xplorer-2, which has a nice search function. Looking around on
the internet would probably reveal other solutions to the problem
of searching many files.
Where I can find the "source code" file with English sentences or words, please?
Thanks.
As I said before, the text strings in the executable itself are scattered about
in the code itself.

It is in CSBwin--> src folder. (See screenshot)

[PATRICK](1) [JUST GAINED A](2) [DRUIDE](3) [LEVEL](4)
[PATRICK](1) [GAGNE UN](2) [NIVEAU](4) [DRUIDE](3)

I saw in files the English sentences. If I translate these sentences. There is a length of letters to be respected (Outside those of the graphs)?
For example:
English: SAVE
French: SAUVEGARDE
It is very long.
I wrote SVG (or SVGD) It is more short.
I translate all files with English sentences and words (CSBwin game). I sending you these translated files, ok?
Thank you.

Oh, dear! We have a bit of misunderstanding.

The source files are text files. You examine and search them
with a text editor, not a hex editor. They contain human-readable
text, not hexadecimal digits. You might use Notepad, for example.
But there are better, free text editors readily available.

In general, you need not worry about replacing a short string with
a longer string. There are, no doubt, exceptions which we will
discover.
I translate all files with English sentences and words (CSBwin game). I sending you these translated files, ok?
No. NOT OK. Look at the files (for example Magic.cpp) with a text
editor and then we will try to decide our next step. I need to know
three things about each occurrence:
1) File name
2) Line number
3) Translation
Then I will decide how to go about getting it done.

***A long and rambling note***

I received the following via private PM. I may have said something
that can be misinterpreted.
Hi Paul,
I erased (deleted) these three files of my computer:
dungeon.dat
graphics.dat
CSBwin.exe
I am not a hackering (pirate)
But, I would like a French version on your "site". Because CSB Atari and CSBwin are very good game.
Regards,
<signature>
I used the word 'Hack'. But it was not intended as 'Bad Thing'. To me, 'Hacking'
in this case means to modify the operation of a program via the 'back door'.
Changing HEX bytes in an executable is a perfect example. And I said that
I would not cooperate in that endeavor. But I said that only because I find
it distasteful. Not because I disapprove of other people's doing it.

Hack away at CSBwin to your heart's content. I don't mind at all. Just
don't ask me for help.

Two of the files you deleted (dungeon.dat and graphics.dat) are not mine at all.
You certainly don't have to answer to me for any use you put them to.
They belong to the creators of those files. And CSBWin.exe, itself, can hardly
be called 'mine'. I stole almost all of it from the Atari version of Chaos Strikes Back.
It was not even reverse-engineered.....it was simply translated.

Off topic a bit--------at first glance it would seem that translating Dungeon Master
and Chaos Strikes Back would be more straight-forward if you were to start
with DSB. The source for that has been released recently, I believe. And I can
attest to its adherence to the original games.

My English is bad. And I am bad in computer. Sorry.
I do not know the laws. I thought I had done something illegal. It is why I erased these three files. But, it is not important for me. If we can translate CSBwin in French. (For your site)
It was you who created CSBwin. I thank you for all this work. It is nice to play CSBwin with Windows. BRAVO.

Dungeon Master and Dungeon Master 2 are in French. Only Chaos Strikes Back is in English.
I do not know DSB. But, we can translate 2 games? Or I did misunderstand you?
For CBSwin. I downloaded "Notepad ++". It is correct?
(1) File name
(2) Line number
(3) Translation
I opened "CSBwin'==> "scr"==> Magic.cpp (1)
Sentence "JUST GAINED A" is on line 166. (2)// " GAGNE UN " (3)
Word "LEVEL" is on line 168. (2)// " NIVEAU" (3)

I found these sentences or words in Magic.cpp file:

984 line: const char *msg="UNKNOWN SPELL ERROR"; // "ERREUR, SORT INCONNU"

994 line: msg = TranslateLanguage(" NEEDS MORE PRACTICE WITH THIS "); // " DOIT S'ENTRAINER AVEC CE SORT DE "

997 line: msg = TranslateLanguage(" SPELL."); // " SORT."

1003 line: msg = TranslateLanguage(" MUMBLES A MEANINGLESS SPELL."); // " MARMONNE UN SORT INCOHERENT."

1008 line: msg = TranslateLanguage(" NEEDS AN EMPTY FLASK IN HAND FOR POTION."); // " DOIT AVOIR UN FLACON VIDE EN MAIN."

1096 line: msg = "THAT IS A DIFFICULT SPELL. STUDY IT."; // "C'EST UN SORT DIFFICILE. EXCERCE-TOI."

1099 line: msg = "THE SPELL FIZZLES.";// "LE SORT FAIBLIT."

1102 line: msg = "THE SPELL FIZZLES AND DIES."; // "LE SORT FAIBLIT ET CESSE."

1105 line: msg = "THIS SPELL IS TOO DIFFICULT."; // "CE SORT EST TROP DIFFICILE."

1108 line: msg = "% NEEDS MORE PRACTICE WITH THIS SPELL.", chIdx;// "% DOIT PRATIQUER PLUS SOUVENT CE SORT."

1111 line: msg = "THIS SPELL REQUIRES A COMPONENT."; // "CE SORT EXIGE UN ELEMENT."

Image

It is correct?

PS: Why I can not edit my old messages? I would like to delete all screenshots and some texts.

I believe you can edit messages for a short time after posting them.

Editing old messages was disabled because (I think) people were
changing history inappropriately.

I'll try to make a CSBwin with your suggested translations.

Thank you.

I only wanted to delete the screenshots (and the text for translators.)

Two files you have. They have good.
dungeon.dat ==> 100%.
graphics.dat ==> 100%. Picture 122 is not readable text. I saw it in the game.
If the file I sent you is good. I continue.
