I received the following via email:
But, I can not find the words for: Clothes, weapons, scrolls, attacks (CHOP, CLEAVE, BERZERK...) Etc.
I saw a tool: "DMExtract v1.01 and CSBEdit v1.0 for PC".
I downloaded this tool. But, it does not work with my computer (windows 7). (See screenshot).
I continue searching for those words.

I saw Deutsch words in a file. CSBwin has been translated into Deutsch?
I believe we will be able to handle Clothes, etc. by using the translation.txt
file. We translated some of the program to German by using the
translation.txt file. I pointed this out earlier in this thread and included
the contents of that file in my post. This feature needs to be extended and
I am currently in the process of doing just that. Patience, please. I'll return
with good news perhaps within a few days.

Get this archive:

http://dianneandpaul.net/CSBwin/CSBFrench1.zip

It contains all the files necessary to play Chaos Strikes Back in French.

You should not change ANY of the files EXCEPT translation.txt.

You can translate a lot of the game using this file (translation.txt).
When you have modified this file as much as possible, there will
be some things that did not get translated. Then we will work
on those things. But first......edit translation.txt (using a text
editor, not a hex editor) in an attempt to get everything properly
translated to French.

Any questions? Ask away! Should be fun.

Thank you for your archive.
I translate Deutsch words only? (I write French words instead of Deutsch words)

I checked in the game. I did not see everything (sentences or words).
I write notes.
Image
For example:
Line 1:
"QUIT" -->"QUITTER" //not yet No good
It is too long. Because there are two places: "Save menu for example" and "UTILITY". "Menu" is good. Mais "UTILITY" is not good. It is too long. We must write "QUIT." (It is good)

I understand all texts are gathered in the file: "translation.txt". This to make executable(s), language independent.
I like it.
How is this implémented ?
By mean of reference numbers in the executable(s) a search in the translation.txt file, some indexing.
It seems, texts string lenght is not free ?
i am just curious, i will not go into translating DM games.

A simple search of the translation.txt file.

PRINT (TranslateLanguage("QUIT"));

for example.

I also am making some buttons resizeable depending on the
text they must contain. And I will undoubtedly have to make
other code modifications to accommodate variable length texts.

I said something stupid, sorry. You have separated the two words "Menu" and "UTILITY". See scrennshot.
"QUITTER" (It is good):

"QUIT." (It is not handsome):

Word: "QUIT" for "NEW ADVENTURE" is elsewhere.

I am one old man. I miss neurons...

Here is an example of a sentence that is too long:

Line 23, English sentence "SAVE AND QUIT". French sentence "SAUVEGARDER ET QUITTER"... It is not good. I adjust: "SVG ET QUITTER"... It is good.

I posted a new executable: (Just the one file)

http://dianneandpaul.net/CSBwin/CSBwin16_0.7z

This fixes a few things and allows the "QUIT" to be replaced
by a longer string in the upper right corner of the UTILITY menu.

Try it and let me know what problems remain.

All is well.
For "QUIT" (QUITTER)... It is very good (Menu and "UTILITy"). Obsequiously (cap in hand).. Bravo, Monsieur.
It is possible to center this sentence "PAS MUNITION"?

I thank you for your help.

"NEED AMMO" and "CAN'T REACH" are centered when using
CSBwin version 16.1:

When you are satisfied that everything has been translated
properly, send me your 'translation.txt' so that I can include
it in the standard releases.

One question, please.
Many sentences and words are missing from your "translation.txt" file.
I add sentences and words missing on your "translation.txt" file?
For example:
71 "JUST GAINED A" " GAGNE UN "
72 "LEVEL" "NIVEAU DE "
73 Etc.
Thanks.

I know. I am relying on you to find and translate all the
words and phrases. You should tell me when things don't
work and I will attempt to fix them.

I am lost, sorry.
I did not find some sentences and words in source code files:
Scroll, Walls, Clothes, Weapons, Food, etc.

Sentences and words found. I think some files (source code) are useless.

I did not find some sentences and words in source code files:
That is correct. The names of objects are in the graphics.dat file.
I believe they are encoded as 5-bit characters and will not be
obvious using a hex editor. (the DM Encyclopaedia has a list of
them, I think).

I translated a couple of them in the 'translation.txt' file that I sent
you. See the bottom two lines. ("GOR COIN" and "DAGGER", I think)
It is up to you to translate the rest.

If you would like a list of objects, play Chaos Strikes Back, select
resume, select a saved game, and click on ASCII DUMP.
A text file will appear in your directory and in it you will find
the names of all objects, monsters, scrolls, texts, etc.
I think some files (source code) are useless
Useless? Hmmmmmmm. I'd hate to think I went to all that
work for something that is useless.

No, my English is bad. I spoke for French translation.

Thanks. Because "DMuteV14" does not work on my computer. "DMute" editor is running but I can not open "graphics.dat" and "dungeon.dat" files.

You did not answer my question. My question is stupid?

Yes, I see.

But I have a problem. I do not know maximum number of letters. It is perhaps 14 letters maximum. I do not know.
And I can not check in game.

Yes. You should add additional lines, as needed, to the translation.txt file.
I do not know maximum number of letters.
Nor do I. Why not assume that the maximum is the longest existing name
or line of text. The longest object seems to be "STAFF OF CLAWS", or
fourteen letters. You are welcome to try a longer name and see what happens.
There is no texts for Scroll in the file "ASCIIDUMP" !!
There is in mine. Search for the work "SCROLL". You will find the
text associated with each scroll. Example "PRAY/FOR A/MIRACLE".
This is a three-line text separated by '/'.

I also think the number of letters is 14. But I could not check it. I stand at 14 letters maximum.

I can not find "SCROLL". I looked in folder "scr" of the source code folder. And in the files of game folder "CSBwin".
Tomorrow, I will look everywhere in all files.

Did you produce the file named "asciidump.txt" as I described above?

Look in the file "asciidump.txt". Search for the word "Scroll".
There are only five scrolls in the game.

Yes (of course, I'm listening to you). But I may not be far enough in the game.
You know:
1) I play DM1
2) I play CSBwin for check the translation
I play these two games to harmonize the translation (Because the translation of DM1 is good, but there are sentences or words too long. I adapt the translation DM1 (Not for all sentences and words).
3) I translate and sometimes... I am lost.

You want to find the text of scrolls....Is that correct?

OK. Let us try to do this in six easy steps.

1) Did you produce the file 'asciidump.txt' as I described above?

2) Did you look at the file with a text editor? (Notepad++ for example)

3) Can you please post the first line of that file here in the forum to
prove to me that you have produced and seen the file?

4) Did you search this file for the word 'Scroll'?

5) Did you find the work 'Scroll' in the file?

6) Do you see that the text of the scroll appears two lines later in the file?

3) Pouvez-vous s'il vous plaît poster la première ligne de ce fichier ici dans le forum pour
prouvez-moi que vous avez produit et vu le fichier?
You do not know, but I'm 60 years old... And I'm not a liar. OK, my English is bad... I am very bad at computer. I translate games only. Me, I know it.
Be patient with me, please. I spend all my day translating this game because I like this game. I translate games since 10 years (it is my hobby). Sometimes alone and sometimes for people.

5) Did you find the work 'Scroll' in the file?

6) Do you see that the text of the scroll appears two lines later in the file?
No. I do not see those words.

You do not know, but I'm 60 years old
Congratulations, I'm 78.

5) Did you find the word "Scroll" in the file?
You clearly found the word 'Scroll' in the file at line 5935....it is
highlighted in your attached screen dump.

Two lines later, at line 5937, you will see the words "FIGHTERS/CHARGE".
That is the text of the scroll. It is two lines long with a '/' separating the lines.

You will find the word 'Scroll' a total of five times, with each followed by
the text of the associated scroll.

In the translation.txt file you might put the following:

"FIGHTERS/CHARGE" "MOVE/FORWARD/COMBATANTS"

or however you translate that text.
