But what's the best version? Or rather, best versionS, since I'm looking at specific aspects and I'm sure different ports match different criteria: 1. Purest version--the version closest to the original. 1. Amiga DM :D Incorrect - the Atari ST version is the original, and so by definition also the ...

Re: Which route do you start first ?
I do Ku first, because I find it the easiest. Seems to be a general trend - and I don't think that I was influenced by this forum because I used to do Ku first back in the day too. I tend to do Dain last, because I find it the most difficult. Or, perhaps the "most fiddly" rather than the &...

Don't let some of the regulars hear you say that, or you will be perma-banned
More seriously I do agree that fake walls are not the best mechanic, so I see where you are coming from. Even though I found CSB to be an amazingly well-designed game once I got into it.

Hey Matzie. Welcome to the forums! I would say that you are indeed one of the younger members - impressive that DM still interests people who didn't grow up with it.
So you started on custom dungeons. Have you played the original dungeons (DM and CSB) also?

Re: Playing DM for the first time
Based on the high priest levels across the team (and all the green stats) I am guessing that you were buffing your characters a lot! Good luck with the rest of DM, and CSB if you start it (hint: you should) I played a bit of EOB1 and enjoyed it. However, the only access I had was a friend who had it...

Also, long time since we heard from you last, but I guess you had your hands full (figuratively and literally) with the new family.

Welcome Ankha. Congrats on finishing DM and especially CSB! Like you, I did not finish it when I first started (age 10 or so). It wasn't until I joined this forum that suddenly it started to make sense.

Re: Best Stamina characters
As far as I know, the things that influence stamina and food drain are: 1. Character actions, e.g.running around, attacking, or casting spells (which explains why magic-users burn through more food than most), and 2. vitality. Vitality is a measure of how fast you recover stamina. So given your pref...

Re: Best Stamina characters
Hey Paul. Good luck in your return to the dungeon! Halk is probably the obvious choice for a 4th high stamina character. That said, it would leave you with two characters who have zero mana (Halk and Stamm). You can get around that if you work at it, but it could be limiting if you want to use a lot...

Re: Favourite and least favourite level?
It seems that am the only one to dislike the Arena. Also I never liked Clockwise, but I didn't add it to my non-preferred list because the rest of that level is fine. It seems that the Store Rooms are not popular. I still like them, but I do them gradually. I sit in the screamer room for some traini...

Favourite and least favourite level?
I started DM again and started thinking about what levels I liked and what ones I was less fond of (basically which ones I went through as quickly as possible, and which ones I spent more time on). Favourite level for me is still level 3. Not just because of the screamer room, I also liked the chall...

Re: Definitive spelling?
I never noticed the variation. I would have sworn that it was PAL and DAIN consistently throughout! If I had to decide on what counts as definitive, I would say whatever appears in-game should be taken above whatever appears in manuals. DAIN appears on all relevant scrolls (?) in-game, so it seems f...

Re: New experiences with an old game...DM
I was wondering...how do you get the rat room to fill up with rats? There is a rat generator near the rat room: http://dmweb.free.fr/?q=node/142 That said, I sometimes had difficulty generating enough rats to keep my champions fed at this spot. Maybe there is a delay after activating this before it...

Re: New experiences with an old game...DM
By the way, oh_brother, have you ever gone to the bottom level (the long stairway with the winged-key on the wall) to train? I know the place you mean, but I have never trained there. If I ever try to get to Archmaster I will start spell-slinging in that spot, but for a fun bit of grinding I still ...

Re: New experiences with an old game...DM
The maximum level I have reached is Mon Master, and that was with the Pendant Feral and the Firestaff. Maybe I need to train more. Or move my training from the Screamer room to the Rat room (I know the rat room is more effective, but I have always preferred the screamer room for whatever reason).

You just wrap your text in url tags. In the first tag you have "url=www.google.com" or whatever lnk you want (all inside square brackets, quote marks removed). Then finish up with [/url] Traumatized as a child? So that's why you wear that 'cloak of darkness' on your avatar. One reason amon...

No, Ishar was a DM clone - no pink rabbits. Even though I am sure they would have improved the game immensely.

Welcome Drake Blue.
I was also scarred and traumatised by CSB as a child. It wasn't until I joined these forums in '09 that I went back and beat Chaos for the second time. Well worth the wait!

Re: (2nd?) Best game in DM's genre?
DM is number 1 for me. CSB also, at least after I finally understood it when I replayed after joining this forum. But the one thing that I missed was different environments and npcs - the more 'roleplaying' aspects. I was excited when Ishar came out as it had all of these aspects. Wandering around a...

Re: A little teaser...
Nostalgia is proabbly at play in these preferences,as is the desire to retain the essence of DM. But for me it goes beyond that. The uniformity of the bricks on all 4 surfaces in the new version reminds me of a chute, rather than a tunnel. Also, I seem to remmeber Jan saying years ago that those typ...

Re: A little teaser...
It seems to be a consensus but for what it's worth I prefer the skeleton on the right too.
It also reminds me how underwhelming the DM skeletons are. Most other monsters in DM, even though they are low resolution, have a lot more charm and/or realism.

I don't have DM installed on this computer so I cannot test it, but I would be surprised if this was the case for the ST or Amiga versions of the games (or the clones that followed).
