How come you cant go the exact route you went out but in reverse? That's what I do. Ladder N1 takes you back up into the ghost cellar.
Are you saying you cannot exit the ghost cellar back up to the main hall of teh tower?
You need to put a certain object in the alcove near ladder N1

I still have a challenge during the pumpkin game.

Does anyone know what is the shortest way to the alcove under Alexis-Startroom.

My idea was: tower - cellar - phantomdoor - ladder 2 - sewer - mines - bramuds cave - stairs down to Alexis starting room - stairs down to the alcove…. but ...

I am currently playing through now, i think i've opened every door (that can be opened) in the sewers now. My standard way to get in/out of teh tower after the main door is closed is to go into the ghost cellar, down the first ladder N1 to the right as you come down the stairs, then follow the path ...
