Fiction The Dungeon Master by Sam Lipsyte (2010)

The Dungeon Master has detention.

We wait at his house by the county road. The Dungeon Master’s little brother Marco puts out corn chips and orange soda.

Marco is a paladin. He fights for the glory of Christ. Marco has been many paladins since winter break. They are all named Valentine, and the Dungeon Master makes certain they die with the least possible amount of dignity...

The Dragon Master, in this Dungeon & Dragons based story, is a Killer. Except he isn’t, really. As Sam Lipsyte says in a great interview with Wizards.com, “Generally the Dungeon Master does see it as his duty to teach them that life is disappointment.” He does a very good job. The mystery is why they stick with him.

He obviously played D&D in his young years.

I would like to share this comment too ... memories..: "there were those of us who played because it was a fun game...But there were others who played for other reasons. People who didn’t seem to enjoy it as a game, but for whom it seemed to mean something more. People for whom a game was supplying something missing from their lives..."
