Playing DM under emulation

Post by Gambit37 »

You can play the PC version of DM using DOSBOX, Atari ST versions on Steem, or Amiga versions on WinUAE. Please see the Dungeon Master Encyclopaedia for more information on how to play emulated versions:

Does that run fine ?
I had no luck with X68000 emulators trying to run Atari games , I just wasted my time for no good result. I did not try with DM though, I messed with "Dragon Flight".
Do I have a chance with Steem to run the FTL DM Atari ST version ?

I found WinUAE to be a great emulator, but I am using WindowsXP after all... so there could be issues with other versions of Windows.

@Magica: The original DM Atari ST sound *was* terrible by modern standards. It's not going to sound very good on modern hardware.

@Terkio: I've no idea what state the emulators are in, I've not used any of them for many years.

I'd recommend UAE, simply because the Amiga version of DM was so much better.

It was released later, took advantage of some palette tricks to have a full colour hand, and also had the footstep sounds that I believe the atari lacked.

Really, it just depends which console you had back in the day I suppose. My friend had an atari and that was the first time I played DM, but I played it most on Amiga :)

Me too. First played it on st at my mate's house. Then got it for my Amiga. Best days ever. WinUAE on win vista works brilliantly.

i played dm on my amiga back in the day. i do have winuae and it works great for everything i've run on it. i haven't tried dm on it yet but i will. it will probably be a while before i try dm though. :( i've injured my left hand and find playing dm without the keyboard shortcuts cumbersome, especially when getting attacked by hordes of monsters.

Do you have one of those little white bandages with the blood stain on? ;-) Come to think of it, where in the dungeon do they get those bandages anyway....?

Hope it gets better soon mate!

Seriously: Sorry about your hand.

So the Amiga version had footsteps? Any other places it was much better than the Atari ST?

The Horn of Fear and Warcry had audio. "YEE-AAH!"
Later versions of the Amiga also allowed you to drink directly from the water fountains and you could tap the walls to detect illusions.

I purchased DM for the PC, years back (I was so excited to find it had come out for the PC that I actually bent my schedule to go home and play it).
I wonder if that was the Amiga version, since I'm sure I remember drinking directly from the water fountains and the "YEE-AAH" sound (if that's spelled correctly  ).

PC version had many of the Amiga enhancements in it.

One of the small (but, in my opinion, very nice) improvements on the Amiga was that it used a hardware sprite for the cursor instead of drawing it in software like the ST version. This means that you could move the cursor around and it would update at your screen's rate (50 hz for most of you, 60 hz for me) as opposed to the 5-something times per second DM managed to redraw the screen.

Is the 50hz / 60hz thing related to PAL/NTSC? The ST version also showed the cyan outline icon of an object when picked up, if I recall correctly, whereas Amiga showed full colour.

Yes, 50hz for PAL and 60hz for NTSC.

The hand thing is also true, and was already mentioned above. :)

Actually yeah I remember now, us and uk resolutions and refresh rates. The word 'modulator' springs to mind! :)

Sorry, totally didn't see that mentioned above. (Unless its the full colour hand comment.... )
