skullkeep X64 How?...brain hurts...spooooock!

Post by Neocron »

Skullkeep was my favorite and really the only DM game other then EotB for Snes... i was just recently watching D&D the 80s cartoon and thought id like the fire up the sega cd emulator and i found out there was a version for window, now i must find this, omg mouse support! Kega emu has mouse but its dicey at best and the set up is a nightmare for my windows 7 pc

so my question is how to get Skullkeep working on my win7 x64 pc
step by step speak to me like a child lol i want this....i can play all to newer games i want but DM has always held a place in my hearth

thank you in advance!

First of all, welcome to the forum! 8)

What version of DM2: Skullkeep do you have?

If it's the DOS version, you would need to run it through DOSBox, which is, at least on my Windows 8 Computer, the only way to run DOS games. Windows could still handle older DOS programs up until XP most of the time.

There was also a version made for the Amiga as well, which should run fine on a good Amiga emulator, such as winUAE.

The other version I know about is on RTC (Return to Chaos), if that's the version you want, you would first need to download RTC v0.49 and DM, CSB and DM2:Skullkeep should all come preloaded on RTC. You would run whichever of them you want by loading RTC, then selecting the dungeon you want to play from the list that shows up.

Other then that the best thing I can suggest, if you have a true windows port, would be to find out what the latest version of windows that it's compatible with is, then right click on the DM2 icon, select "Properties" from the menu that pops up, then go to the "Compatibility" tab, click the box that says "run in compatibility mode for" and select the version of Windows from the drop box that's the latest one the game can run on.

Hmm, IMO you definitely need to use a DOS emulator to run a dos game in Win7 or win 8. If DOSbox isn't working you could either try a different emulator or a newer version of DOSBox.

Well, it sounds like you're getting close now. Awesome! I wish I could help you with the sound configuration for DOSBox but I'm not that familiar with those settings. I haven't used DOSBox very much and haven't had to configure the sound in it yet. You seem to be on the right track at least and I have no doubt that with a little experimentation and/or research you should get this problem licked too.

Forget 161 ( this is for DM PC version )

I downloaded DM2 PC Version from here: http://www.myabandonware.com/game/dunge ... llkeep-2rb
Using DOSBox-0.72 the game works fine. ( no fiddling required ).

Launch the game with DM2.BAT. ( Do not use SKULL.EXE, it gives an error in DOS4GW.EXE )
To go full screen: ALT+Enter

I tested with Windows XP, I did not try with Windows 7.

Here http://www.dosbox.com/ They say DOSBox ( Latest version 0.74 ) works on Windows 7 32bit and 64bit.

I doubt the DOSBox version ( 0.72/0.74 ) makes any diference.
Looks more like a sound configuration or compatibility issue. You' ve been there, I guess http://www.dosbox.com/wiki/Sound
Can you try on another PC ?

Edited;
I just tried on another PC with Win 7 and DOSBox Version 0.74. DM2 PC from here: http://www.myabandonware.com/game/dunge ... llkeep-2rb
( May be, not the best source, the game looks tampered. )
I had music working fine, right away, but no sound.
I found inconsistent IRQ numbers: irq = 7 in the DOSBox configuration file / IRQ = 5 in the DM2 skull.cfg file.
Fix: With IRQ = 7 in skull.cfg .......sound works fine.

Back on the PC with Win XP and DOSBox 0.72....I realized, I had missed I had the very same issue, music but no sound. The same fix made everything working fine.

On both PC I did not notice your issue "sound WITH music is distorted". Is that obvious strong distortion one cannot miss ?
